Always try to remember that a painting is NEVER finished, it is just interrupted at a certain stage of its development. It took me forever to learn this. Wonderful development going on in your studio. ,💪💪🌸🌸🌅

Hi Gaynor, I just found you last week and haven’t found time to comment because I’ve been binge watching your channel ever since. I started doing watercolor and pastels 25 years ago. It’s all I wanted to do when I wasn’t painting I was thinking about painting. Then I got breast cancer in 2006 and it all went away all my inthusiasm taken away by chemotherapy and radiation. Thank you for starting this channel you have gotten me excited to paint again. I love your work, house, clothes, garden, cabin and most of all how you work. I’ve been struggling to get loose forever and you have helped me do that in just this week. I can’t wait for Thursdays now😊❤ much love to you.

A few days ago I had a "what was I thinking?" Moment also! Sennelier abstract NEON all over a 16x20 canvas...very beautiful, but I was STUCK! Today I watched this video twice and absolutely loved the original background (white scratchy) behind the foxgloves and realized I was at a RISK moment...I took it by pouring gesso all over it and then whipping some away. 😁🤗😁Now I see the beautiful colors but they are not so strong...here goes a new start....I will keep you posted!😁 Thank you so much!Love from Lisa in Texas USA.🇺🇲

Your cheese plant has grown so much! Obviously a very happy home for it. I tend to give up on a painting so it is wonderful of you to remind me us it is okay to rework or start over. Watching now. That cheeseplant is indigenous to South Africa. We had one, it grew enormous in the garden and was much admired until we discovered that its roots had found a way into our sewerage pipes. We found out because the toilets wouldn't flush. It turned out the roots had gone along 20 metres of pipe and into our septic tank. When the people came to sort it out, the septic tank was empty because the "cheese plant" had consumed everything in there, even the thingys that keep it viable. So I won't be buying one again.
@@gaynorpattle Thank you, I'm fine. It's autumn here now and we are entering our dry season. Down in the Cape it will be their wet season as they have a meditteranean climate. As to the cheese plant, It wasnt funny at the time, it was very expensive! We moved from there ten years ago and now have municipal waste so no more problems, but in our climate it really is only suitable for very large ;properties and far far away from foundations and plumbiing. Magnolias are so pretty, they would be nice to paint, no fiddly teeny petals
You just keep thinking about your paintings and analyzing their faults and merits and then BOOM, you act! I’m the big thinker/analyzer but SO SLOW, on the acting. You always inspire me to just “take a RISK,” and barge forward. Your risks are informed we cannot forget. Seeing what’s wrong doesn’t always make us see what could be right for the painting but it’s such a good start to be able to resolve the issues and do what the painting needs. It’s about what the painting needs not what we need. Thanks for getting into the painter’s psyche with us❤

Hi Gaynor ---this was a banner week with your video on Thursday & also the last Sandi Hester video explained Values so well. Isn't it interesting that you decided to do more on older paining. Can't wait to see how it turns out. I have had the task this week of picking out Roof Shingles as we are having a new roof put on. So many different colors available. We went online to shingle manufacturer & could upload a pic of our home & then try out different color roofs. I was able to see the Values & how they read on the roof computer sample. I discovered that the shingles with the huge contrast in values was not as pleasings as the ones with the same color values at least on a roof. Imagine trying to explain that to a roof contractor & a man at that. LOL But I gave myself credit for being able to see & understand this Finally!!!! Looking forward to your next video.
'Horrified' by the foxgloves made me laugh out loud 😂 I see what you mean about it needing more 'strength' but I still thought they looked great. 🤷♀ Loved seeing some of the older paintings coming back out again in this video, and of course, there can never be enough of the chairs 💗
I just love your videos, they are just so cheerful and inspiring. The foxgloves....I loved the color, and I agree that the left side needed a little bit more. As I studied them with you, I was thinking of what I might do with them. I thought I would add a bit of architecture in the distance, like the edge of a manor house, in a sort of blurry way. One thing I do know, is that the end result that you come up with, will look fantastic!

On the original I would have taken out the green leaves in the front and added something round a third of the way up on the left. Having said all that only you know what you want! There was something about the foxgloves that I liked as they were. They drew me in and had a very peaceful feeling about them. But I really enjoyed watching what you did with them and how they looked after your changes. I love how brave you are with your work.

Hi Gaynor, Always something happening and a variety of artwork to move to if you get a bit stuck. Its a great approach. Most of us when we get stuck on one thing, lose confidence so easily and then get frozen and disheartened. On the other hand, you just go for it!!! Such a positive spirit. After watching your latest fab video, I've been looking at a painting that I've got stuck with. I asked myself which bits don't sing. Sudden clarity. Some bits are too fiddly. I really like them, but they don't fit with the rest of the work. Time to wield a brush and take a scary risk. Thank you. I always learn something new on a Thursday.

Foxgloves are now so happy to be settled into their environment - you wove your wand. The chair/lilacs has arrived! I was waiting and waiting to see the raw green floor leave the scene. Of course if I had done it, I wouldn't have seen it or known what to do. You are so right, Gaynor - patience is the key.

Hi Gaynor, it occurred to me that your vase project is perfect for working with your gelli plate! You can do a series of backgrounds and then do a paper cut-out of the shape of the vase and have fun! I look forward to see it develop more. On another note, I am curious about how you finish your paintings, do you varnish them? I ask because I also re-work mine after a while and worry that if I varnish one I won't be able to go bak to it at a later stage. TIA
Hello Angie, YES, I'm wondering about the gel plate. If you use a matt medium or gloss medium you can seal but still work on top. When I wipe back, I get to what was there.....if that makes sense !!! Have a go XXX

You might not need it, but if you stand for a while when you’re painting, it would be really good for your feet knees and back to put a yoga mat underneath you or something made of the same material and you can cut it to whatever shape you want, it just helps. Take some of the impact of your joints and allows you to stand for longer without irritating them.I use this because I have arthritis however I have found that it’s really made a difference for people that don’t have any back or leg issues. They actually find that it eases the tension in the joints and they can stand for longer periods of time.

This was so well timed for me Gaynor, thank you 😊 I am trying to paint a hare but not happy with it. I was going to give up but you have given me ideas so going to try more contrast in colour and mark making. The foxgloves will look amazing, love the change of composition ❤
@15:07 again @17:11 the "greens" outside the windows show values... also seeing those steps show amazing color changes with the principle of where a dark then a light creates interest. Comparing shades with what can B taught by nature... teaches us 2 C 3D. ... the foxglove canvas vs. nature. So ...When taking a painting outside or while "plein aire" the eye begs for staring 😮 backing up really seeing what and where R the next moves could draw the eye to the story being written. Wheels may B the all-time greatest invention, is the table next in mobility? Ann
