Totally agree on the wish for more minimalistic running shoes from Altra. In particular for road running. Would love a road running equivalent of the Superiors.
I too agree that I'd prefer a return to a more minimalist running shoe. I am actually a racewalker and have been favoring the Escalante or Escalante Racer. For me, the Escalante 3.0 is not a favorite, just too much sole. Bring back something similar to the 2.5. I've enjoyed the Superior as well although end often wearing it as a casual shoe. Overall, from my perspective, Altra is producing too many shoes with thick soles reminding me of Hoka which I really don't care for!!
Ive been wearing the Escalantes as a casual shoe, but found the Torin 7 is actually a better choice given how the upper does not retain water in the same way.
The Escalante 3 does everything I need a road shoe to do, I don’t see the need for any more cushioning or stiffness. If I didn’t already have a wide choice of trail shoes I’d probably get the Superior 6 or Lone Peak 7
The FWD is definitely another experience. The midsole stands out the most in comparison to other models, and not thr drop. I feel it brings a nice variation in my rotation. The different load on the muscles is a positive for me.
@@TDMiller I use only Altra or barefoot shoes but that vJ model is footshaped like Altra, go and Google it 😊 Thats why Im interested in that for winter runnning.
If you pronate, it's surprising you like the Olympus. They're neutral but have slight correction for supination. Provision and Paradigms almost crippled me bc of this
I love the FWD but I’m feeling a similar thing in my right hip that I’ve never felt in the Torin. I think it is the drop but at least my Achilles feels good.
TD great overview. I am new to Altra and came to them for help battling a neuroma. I tried the Torin 7 but found it really dug into my ankle bone to the point it was painful. Also found the Torin for me is not ideal at all for any speed sessions. I swapped them out for Rivera 3 and really love them. They have just the right amount of cushion and are lively/light enough I can use them for speedwirk and easy/long runs. One thing I wish is maybe for a wider toe box on them. Are there any other models similar to the Rivera that would offer the same experience with a wider toe box (and without digging into my ankle)?
Hey! Great question! If you don't mind a 4mm drop, you could try the Altra FWD Experience. It's slightly more cushioned, but is wider (similar to the Torin). As for Altra's zero-drop shoes, there's no real alternative other than the Torin. Maybe the Escalante, but it is more minimalistic with 24mm stack height, so I'm not sure you'd like it.
You mentioned the Lone Peak 8 coming in Jan. Do you know more about the updates in that version? I skipped the 7s and found old pairs that I really liked. I've been waiting to learn about the 8s.
I'm afraid not much. Rumoured to have an new upper offering improved durability. I posted a few pics on my community tab if you've missed them. We can expect a decrease in price compared to previous versions, which I'm happy to see. 👍
i've seen the outroad mid which is basically a stitched up gaiter or sockliner although very nice regal/delux(can't be arsed to find the right words, none native speaker zzz) red/yellow/black. not sure if it's supposed to be gen1 or gen2, def not gen3 as the design got changed completely
Good question. Which Torin are you currently wearing as reference? The Torin 5 & 6 and Vanish Tempo run a little short, but the 7 bigger. So I'd recommend to get the same size if you currently have the 5 or 6, or size up if you have the 7. Hope that helps!
I bought them just to have a shoe with a little but of drop in my rotation to load the muscles different. Have the grey/blue version. Looks really good. I feel its the midsole that makes it different to other models, and not the drop
