Bodacious finds lure us to this beautiful beach town antique show in Venice, Florida! Lovely vintage boudoir, old toys in brand-spanking new condition, fabulous flappers and naughty nudies vie for attention in the collections of antique dealers from all over the east coast!
Whose signature is worth $17,000? We find out together as we celebrate one dealer friend's great fortune...but a fortune is not necessary to have fun in this antique venue. A set of deck chairs at flea-market prices show us that it's all about the hunt...
Cute 1950s figurines and 1850s porcelain come with my friend and space-mate Dot, who tells us about a really scarce Belleek piece that's spent 30 years in hiding! We see so much more fun stuff in the show, then wrap up with a recap of some of the special items I got to leave behind with collectors at this charming and fun antique trading event!

Hi George, it was lovely meeting your friend Dot and seeing her Belleek items. As always, amazing items to see. Thanks for bringing us along. I was able to see the Caithness Glass factory in Scotland and purchased a wonderful paperweight. Sadly, it was lost in a house fire, but amazingly, my husband found the exact same paperweight at a lovely store in S.Carolina 2 years ago! (It was a limited edition of wild animals, ours was a rhino)

George, You are great. I learn so much from you. I have just begun to realize that you need to be very educated about anything you decide to collect. From the colors of a manufacturer, to the shape, to the way a piece just looks and the marks. Thank you so much. I love chinoiserie and beautiful glass. I have begun collecting Pilgrim glass. I like it because of it's history and I think it can give Fenton a run for the money. Again, thank you for all your information. For a beginning collector, it's invaluable.

I was researching Italian glass the other day and the controlled bubbles are actually just piercings in the molten glass which are built up layer after layer, creating that effect. They're precise because of the mold they use to pierce it.

Hi George, Brit here. I had a golly in the 70’s as a toddler. I loved him so much. However these days all my loving memories of him are twinged with shame for what I now know he represented. TBH, as a child, I didn’t even know he was meant to be human, much less that a caricature. I thought he was make believe, like Gonzo from the Muppets.

Interesting Victorian trivia.....ladies carried vinaigrette and tiny unguent pots to use in situations when ones' olfactory senses became overwhelmed by malodorous smells. There were always beautiful, creative shapes and designs...often of a whimsical design whose clever meaning was know by a precious few. Miniatures are an underappreciated collector category. I have never been to a factory tour, but I have been to the Finger Lakes region south of Rochester in New York State. Located in Corning, the Corning Museum of glass is in a rather remote locale, but is well worth the two or three hour drive from cities like Syracuse,, Albany, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. The collection is world-renowned and covers everything and anything related to glass. The section on the latest uses for glass-derived industrial and commercial types of "alloys" is particularly interesting. The collection is excyclopedically comprehensive and is an overwhelming feast for the keenest eyes.

Robertson’s make jam and marmalade in the UK and I remember in the late 50s early 60s they had a golliwog as their symbol And you could collect labels and get golly figurines or brooches - we had a complete golly jazz band at one point and my school bag was covered in badges ! How times have changed !
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad Год назад
Such an interesting phenomenon, what is seen as perjorative by adults was seen as sweet and cute by kids who weren't caught up in the "deeper meaning" of it all. The Golly's are certainly cute as characters
@lynnedelacy2841

To be honest I’m not sure anyone thought deeply about it at the time We had a show in the BBC called the Black and White Minstrels (ironically the first programme I saw on a colour TV) where the male singers used black face and the white women wore lovely dresses - and gollys were just another toy in the toy box No idea why Robertsons chose the golly as a symbol although the story is the son of the founder saw the toys in the US - everything was always new and modern and ahead of the times in the US ! He was used from 1910 and from 1928 to 2001 you could collect the labels in exchange for an enamel badge - with gollys doing various things to keep you collecting - and in that time apparently 20 million badges were sent out ! So look out for them - some of them must have made their way to US

George, I was lucky enough to leave PA and go to Ireland for a vacation in October 2019. We were on a CIE tour through AAA. We went for a factory tour of Belleek, and Conemara Marble. Wonderful memories! I wanted to mention that I learned about Lladro at an estate sale two weeks ago. I purchased the Lladro figurine, 5223 Spring is here in perfect condition, with the box. It was half- price day…I paid $15! On the first day of the sale, I passed up three beautiful Lladro figurines because they were $40 each. I sure regretted that! I wanted to attach factory tour pictures, and a picture of my Belleek Cat, but couldn’t figure out how to do it.

I sold it when I moved here. I don't collect paperweights, but the Eickholt and Pairpoint ones I really liked. That actually seemed a good price, on the Russian salt cellar set. Really liked the tramp art box. Oh, Wow! I had a set of four of those WW1 era folding chairs...burned in a house fire. I seriously like that Belleek fish vase! That looked like a fantastic show! I did enjoy that lamp too! I wish I could find a buyer for my lobster trap, it's neat but misplaced in Kentucky. Eickholt and Pairpoint are both good enough to make paperweight collecting interesting,! I love tramp art and wish I could find more. So horrible about that fire, it's funny how you'll see things years later that make you remember. The Belleek fish vase is pretty great and I think someone who saw the video bought it from her! @@TheAntiqueNomad I was going to convert the lobster trap I had into a coffee table. Once mom and I combined houses, there was no space for it here, though. I had an aunt and uncle that lived in Virginia Beach, and my aunt gave me the lobster trap. I would be extraordinarily picky if I were to start a collection of paperweights, but those Eickholt and Pairpoint ones would definitely fit the order, if I did start a collection of paperweights. The house fire was actually that monster house I moved out of to move here with mom. There were still several antiques in the house that there was no space for them here. I had completely forgotten about that set of chairs, though, until your premier. That Belleek fish vase would fit in well with my collection of old fish planters. I do like Belleek.
