First of all, the way Aangs name was pronounced is the same way we say it in Germany and that's okay. And second, I stopped watching as they arrived at the air temple, it was so bad, I couldn't do it any longer.
Facts! That is fake Appa, the right amount of rage. "Why are there so many white people.... I can't believe you are enjoying this, that we are this far apart.... I'm not taking it easy!" Just a few great nuggets lol
@@sydneyice The Appa thing is a bit over the top as animals didn't look great on screen during this timeframe generally. Think NeverEnding Story (yes, that's a bit earlier) or even relatively recent things like Shazam: Fury of the Gods dragon or Lion King (live action). Animal faces are notoriously difficult.
I remember watching this when it first came out and it's still as painful as it was then. No one should have to suffer this poor lackluster adaptation. Same with DB Evolution.
I love how when they first started the animated series Oak was hesitant to watch the show because it was animated but by the end he's as protective over the source as any big fan of the show
Yeah glad Quinn came thru in the end cause he was worrying me...iak and answer were hilarious. Love yall killing this just as much as I loved watching you fall for the animated series. M night should he sued for defamation
@@pfang32 This is to the Avatar tv show what the Sahara movie is to the book. The Sahara movie is still a better movie than this though. I disliked it a fair bit and it had some miscasting but not in this movie's league. Sahara is close to 5/10 while the book it's based on is a solid 7-8/10.
yeah, the problem with the movie, is not just that is not good compare to the show, just the movie alone is weird and doesn't stand a chance to any other movie, is really bad.
Iroh claiming Zuko's destiny is tied to Aang/the Avatar is completely the opposite from the original show in which Iroh kept trying to encourage Zuko to make his own destiny and abandon the search for the avatar.
Shyamalan said in pre-release interviews that he wanted to make this movie because his daughter was such a big fan of the series, and they watched it together as a family. One of my first thoughts WHILE watching the movie was "Shyamalan.... why do you hate your daughter?"
@@alexarias5717 In which Shyamalan says the whole family sat down and watched it after getting the first season DVD's because his daughter was so obsessed with it and wanted to be Katara for Halloween... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i4iWw6GVvrc.html
Most of the crap about the movie came from executive meddling (whitewashing, bad editing, rushing everything and cutting effects budget bc they wanted to save some cash for the 3d conversion). The rest of the crap... yeah that was the director
The creators said the Water Tribes were Innuit inspired, the Air Nomads were Tibetan Monk inspired, Earthbenders were Chinese inspired, and Firebenders were Japanese inspired. It influenced clothing, food, and the look of the written languages throughout the show.
Various of the other sub-details were also based on other Asian cultures depicted throughout the show, that kind girl that helped Iroh and Zuko for the night after they renounced themselves from the Fire Nation wore a Korean hanbok(?) robe and their home was stylized as traditional architecture of rural homes. The musicians from the Cursed Cave episode, their leader played a Himalayan/Tibetan instrument called a dramyin, and the 4 element system itself is based on Buddhist's conception of the world, which includes energy. The blend of many different aspects into a very cohesive world is dope.
"There is no movie in Ba Sing Se" Fun (or Infuriating) casting facts from this train wreck: - the girl playing Katara was the daughter of some big money executive who essentially bought her the part. - the dude playing Sokka was only cast because he was in the Twilight movies which were HUGE at the time and they thought he was a draw. - the actress playing Princess Yue here got Avatar redemption coz she's the voice of a major character from the sequel show Legend of Korra, and she does a fantastic job - the kid playing Aang actually did have pretty good martial arts skills irl. They wasted literally all his potential.
@@robertking4645 Oh im not saying she needed it, but its certainly what she deserved after having to suffer the injustice of being in this mess. She deserved a good role in this franchise.
@RiptideRambo Oh no Dev, my heart breaks for him. He's such a wonderful actor in literally anything else and you can tell he's trying so damn hard to turn this shit into something at least passable.
I just love how in the fight scenes everyone was nice enough to let each other take turns doing their cool moves while the others just stood off to the side awkwardly waiting for their que to do something
Yeah, seems like the composer was the only one who had early notice from Shyamalan. The writing, casting and screenplay, had to have only taken a month. No way else to explain this PoS.
That seems to be a theme: 'The movie is bad, but the music is good'. Composers seem to have a more consistent level of performance than the rest of the process. You hear that all the time!
@@QuestForGood Production companies aren’t always the smartest, they saw how popular the show was, they saw that M. Night Shyamalan was from a similar region(again, not smart), what’s the worse that he can do? After Earth hadn’t come out yet.
"That is NOT Appa, that is FAKE APPA!" Is going to live rent free in my head today. The second i finished watching this reaction i had to immediately watch it again.
I absolutely absolutely love Oak's reaction cos he really represented how the fans felt watching this movie! Though, I'm also very amused and puzzled at how much Quinn is enjoying it 😂
Quinn: "I think you guys are nitpicking." Oak, outraged: "Nitpicking?!" I'm gonna have to agree with Oak here, I think you guys are way kinder with this movie than the rest of the fandom cos most of us were "wtfff is this?????" And we sure as hell, nitpicked 😂
A lot of us have taken a strong stance against the existence of this movie, I think the fandom did a pretty good job in denying it's existence. I just wish they hadn't recommended this movie, it just adds a bitter taste to the whole series. So Netflix is promising a 'great' live action but the fandom is kind of on edge about how they might butcher this series once more, I can only hope Avatar studios can wash away this bad era for ATLA.
Some of it is nitpicking (as someone who saw the movie without seeing the show and who saw the show later). Like the Appa stuff is definitely nitpicking as for this time frame it wasn't that bad for an animal character. The contrast with Avatar is stark but Green Lantern was around this time so it wasn't out of place. And the visual casting of Katara and Sokka wasn't bad, they just weren't written or acted at all like the show characters. Zuko, I feel is a bit off visually but with better scripting, I think it could've worked especially since the actor is talented. Uncle Iroh, honestly if he didn't drink tea and mispronounce his name, I don't think anyone would recognize his character at all. Again, I'm sure the actor might be fine but it's a miscast for sure. Uncle Iroh being overweight is part of his innocuous appearance and part of the deception of his character that people underestimate him. The fire lord could definitely be worse - he's passable (could look a bit meaner), just not as good as Mark Hamill's voice. As a standalone movie (ignoring the show), it's not a great movie, not even good but it's watchable in a late-night Netflix kind of way. If you compare it to the show, it really gets dragged down though, and becomes nearly unbearable.
@@yzyFCBsocio69 Got to see it for free on a plane and turned it off part way through. I didn't even pay money for it and i still felt like i was robbed.
Rewatching the series with three middle aged men who I’ve never met and seeing them fall utterly in love with Avatar The Last Airbender has been amazing. And them tearing the live action movie completely to shreds is hilarious and vindicating. 😂😂😂
30:49 Sokka in the Ember Island episode: "The effects were decent!" We wanted you 3 to watch this because it's basically a tradition to make people suffer through it once they finished the animated series and your reaction did not disappoint.
The best part of this movie was the credits. That way, everyone who's ever watched it knew it was over. As a side note, I'll give 10 Million dollars for cast and crew, and 10 for visual effects. My question, is where the other 100 million went?? (My personal guess, is the Mafia)
My husband and I were fans of the series, and we went to see the movie in the theater with some cautious optimism. We stayed for the whole thing, desperately hoping it would have some redeeming quality. It was agony. As we left the theater, a kid in front of us in line was weeping, crying out, “They RUINED it!” Horrible. I’m glad you guys understand.
I went to the midnight opening at my theater and everyone was so excited waiting to get in and I just remember us all walking out with slumped shoulders looking like someone just ran over our pet. It was devastating.
I watched all of the animated series with my daughter. We loved it together and it was truly a wonderful time with her through the years-a wonderful bonding memory with my girl. I took her to opening night and we sat through the whole thing. She was 10 at the time and while raising our kids we allowed them to curse from time to time if emotions and setting truly called for it. Sometimes it’s a great way to get those big emotions out while having a way to add some levity to bad situations. We were silently walking out of the theater and my 10-year-old daughter turned to me and said, “well, that was shit.” We were able to laugh about it for days after that and it helped to take the sting out of a terrible stain on our special thing. She’s now 23 and we watched the new Netflix show together and were pleasantly surprised. Whatever the opinions of the Netflix show, at least it’s not shit. 😆😆
It was actually pretty fun. It's just the romance didn't hit home, and so the memes are spot on. Other nitpick would be that one big fight scene in snowy forest, a lazy writing at the end of the scene, but the franchise is pretty fun
It was June 28th 2010. The Avatar the Last Airbender movie was coming out in 3 days. All my friends were going to see it on opening night and wanted me to join. sadly I'd only seen 3 episodes of Avatar, but the trailer made it the movie look epic. In 3 days I Binged the entire series of Avatar. This was old school binge. Before streaming. When you had to go to shady sites to find episodes and assume your laptop would be corrupted by spyware. but it was worth it. With hardly any sleep I finished just in time for opening night. The series was a masterpiece and I was so excited for the movie. It had to be good, they had the perfect blueprint. We sat down in a sold out theater with so much anticipation. Then we witnessed the most epic fail of cinematic history. I kept saying it can't possibly be this bad, It will get better. but it never did. It never did! I finally had to accept how bad it was when the Earth benders were being held captive in a rock quarry, and they needed "Katara" to tell them they had earth beneath their feet! Then 10 men did a Stomp the yard dance number to move a single stone. It was so bad. It still haunts me all these years later. I only hope the new live action Netflix series can erase the M.Night dumpster fire from my mind. BTW Dev Patel "Zuko" is actually a great actor. Not in this trash, but in everything else. Please check out Slumdog Millionaire so this isn't the only acting you've ever seen him do.
M.Night Dumster Fire is what imma call him from now on, this movie ruined EVERYTHING this man will put out for me. Lost all respect lmao what a great story, sorry you had to go thru that 😂
Watching the tv show before watching this movie was definitely a mistake on your part. I saw the show AFTER having seen the movie. The movie still isn't good but the part that was most infuriating (without knowing the source material) was actually it's absolutely TERRIBLE 3D. The most obvious cash grab in history for the LEAST effort. At the time, people got the Avatar movies confused (due to similar naming). After watching, no one would ever make that mistake again because Avatar (Jake Sully) is 100x better of a movie (even with unobtainium!) and it's 3-D is undefined amounts better. That's the mathematician in me because 1 000 000/0 is undefined. But for those non-mathematicians, it's infinitely better!
I had a similar experience, in the sense that I binged the series for the first time in preparation for the movie. Our paths diverged when the friend I was supposed to watch the movie with read reviews saying it was so bad it wasn't even fun to laugh at, so we canceled. At least the movie encouraged me to watch a great show.
I saw this with my sister in theaters and i was so excited. By the end we both drove home in silence. Got home. Our mom asked us how it was. I just went upstairs to bed and my sister just shook her head. We never talked about it again.
If it wasn't for Oak I don't think I could've finished this video, the reminder of having to sit through watching this in theatre was too much! I was devastated! Oak's reactions encapsulated everything I felt about this steaming expletive of a film.
Does anyone have any of their other reactions to just plain bad movies? Like this, and the Twilight reactions? Because watching them rip apart this movie was actually hilarious 😂
The oak’s reaction spoke to my soul. I almost never hear him cuss and this movie had my boy furious 😂 I’m glad you all loved the series so much and hated this movie just as much Lol thank you for this reaction!
my poor oak 😭😭 i feel bad about how much pain he’s clearly in but i can’t help but scream laughing too LMAOOOO! this video will absolutely be a mood booster for me for the foreseeable future 💀
So great how Oak was the one saying they had to be open minded and that it couldn't be so bad the most and 2 min later he's yelling and holding back from throwing stuff to the screen 😂. You all are making the movie more enjoyable. Got to sleep now but I'll watch the rest tomorrow 👍
I’d only ever seen the first few minutes of this movie- for obvious reasons- so this was hilarious to see highlights with your commentary😂😂😂 thank you Oak and Answer for embodying all of our feelings on this one. Quinn, I’m SO GLAD you’re always able to find something to enjoy! The way y’all balance each other🤌🏽😂🙌🏽
I would not be surprised if in the writer's room, the idea that the Fire Nation is so powerful and scary that it doesn't even matter if you're surrounded by your element the risk of bending while around the fire nation is not worth it is why this happened. However, it just doesn't work outside of that initial idea. More impressive on paper than in the real world.
@@tinal8447 Not only that ... they also nerfed the Fire Nation by making the benders only be able to bend if fire is around ... making the idea of a very powerful Fire Nation even more laughable >.
"nothing could prepare me for the diarrhea storm" 😂😂😂 well said. Watching reactors experience the pain I experienced in the theater when this came out has helped me immensely
I have to say Dev Patel (Zuko) is actually a fantastic actor. He’s had two Oscar nominations, very well deserved, and numerous other critically recognized performances. This script was just not it and didn’t do him any favors. He deserved so much better than this movie. And side note mark hamill (Luke skywalker) voiced the fire lord 😊 but I really enjoyed your reactions. This movie is painful. Respect to you all 🫡
100% agree on Dev Patel. I don't hate his casting for Zuko. But the script and directing (and the makeup... or lack thereof), did him no favors. But, at least he was a better choice than the original choice to play Zuko: Jesse McCartney.
When I was young, I was confused when I saw that they changed the symbols in the intro. I tried to be optimistic, but I knew it was going to be bad when the dialogue felt nothing like the characters.
In2010 as a senior in highschool who had literally grown up with the cartoon on Nickelodeon I went into the theatre sooo excited, happy, and ready for more of what I knew and still know to be one of the best original IP/american written cartoons in existence. This is right up there with some of my favorite anime, which this drew heavy inspiration from. From the very first moment Sokka opens his mouth and there is not an ounce of humor or happiness from him I knew there was a problem. Then when I heard the very first bastardization of names and how they pronounced Aang as "oong" My excitement turned into twisted despair, and I could feel a piece of my soul being ripped from my body. By the end of the movie I needed to be carried out of the threatre I was too weak to move. I couldnt look at a tv or mirror for two weeks because all I would see was the black void of nothingness that this film represents. Reaching out to take yet another part of me. Screw everyone involved with this film. I cannot imagine netflix will do any better. Edit: I returned from the future... Netflix version was not much better. what a damn shame....Better, but not by much...
@@nikolaykomissarenko7822 We did not, but rumor has it the screen and projector that played the night I saw it mysterious stopped working, and that specific threatre has been boarded up never to be reentered.
I saw this in theaters with my sister. We were sooooooo excited because we had watched Avatar as it premiered live on Nickelodeon. We started trading glances and raised eyebrows probably around the imprisoned Earth benders scene, and by the Zhao death we were debating if we should just go to the arcade in the theater lobby. My mom picked us up afterwards and asked how it was, and in unison we said “It sucked!” 💀
You are correct, Katara and Sokka should have darker skin. At the same time Zuko and other Fire Nation people should have lighter skin, since in the show they looked like they could be Japanese. So the cast somehow is backwards. Fun fact: in Poland we not only say Sokka's name more like they do in the movie, we also pronounce the double 'k' 😀
@@user-mAfuNqrSe020x The Fire Nation is Japonic whereas Earth Nation is Sinitic, not the other way around. This has been settled for many years in the ATLA community, and frankly it's pretty obvious to anyone with the historical-linguistic knowledge. There's many reasons for why we can tell, but among them: - The thematic reason why FN are taking over the world is because Japan was a brutal colonial power occupying much of Asia from North China down to Taiwan, this is why there's FN colonies in ATLA - For much of recent history China was very poor (the 100 Years of Embarrassment is a cultural-political topic in contemporary China), whereas Japan had long been making advancements and trading with the European powers (Portugal & Netherlands notably) prior to and during Japan's colonial phase, this is mimicked in ALTA by the EN being generally poor as well as very modest in clothing & architecture, whereas FN being highly advanced and futuristic for the time period - Non-colonial FN is entirely white whereas the EN is white to light brown (North to South China) - Chinese coins since antiquity have had square holes in them, same with EN coins as we've seen on numerous occasions (I just ordered 4 Chinese coins from 900-1000 AD North Song dynasty for $8 ea, in fact) -- If you know of Genshin Impact (very popular Chinese video game), Chinese themed characters like Hu Tao and Qiqi are depicted with this square hole coin on their person - Naming schemes are important here, FN names like Zuko and Kuzon and Azula are overwhelmingly obviously Japonic-themed and 95% replicatable in Hiragana/Kanji, ex: ずこ Zu.ko, くぞん Ku.zo.n, あずら A.zu.ra, whereas EN names are overwhelmingly representative of Sinitic-themed names, such as Ba Sing Se, Jin Wei, Pao, Beifong, Wu (Yin & Yang or Xi Jin Ping, anyone?) -- But as you say, it's true that it's not 100%-100%, there are Japonic names used by EN and Sinitic names used by FN, such as Lee (think of how many Chinese Americans you've seen with the surname Lee) - Cutting of hair is a much bigger cultural event in Japan, famously in Japanese media this is used as a trope to show a purported massive character change, the scene where Iroh and Zuko cut their hair off is drawing from this If by "white people," you mean European people, there obviously aren't any in Avatar as the Avatar world is themed around Asia (I don't consider Arabia to be Asian) and indigenous Canadians.
@@jeremias-serus well there is other cultures references on the show though, the sun warriors for example who's based off Aztec/Mayan civilizations, from their ancient cities pyramids down to their clothing and face paint. and while you're right, the series isn't really that centered in just one culture/civilization for every nation, its very varied on that aspect. but you put lots of informative stuff in there which is cool ~
@@dan.dandan Of course. I specifically said that, as the person I'm replying to said, that the Fire Nation is not 100% Japanese themed. But it's clearly the main theme. To say that the Fire Nation is anything less than 60-70% Japanese themed would be palpably laughable. I hinted it in my reply because I don't remember for absolute sure, but I'm fairly certain I did once read about either of the authors indeed basing the FN's colonialistic attitude to Imperial Japan's colonialistic attitude. Though secondly, I don't think we'd venture to call ALL firebenders part of the Fire Nation, would we? This including the original firebenders with their Mayan theme.
I laughed so hard as soon as I saw the reaction posted. I went to the cinema with my cousins, thinking that seeing the live-action would convince them to watch the anime. That didn't go well.
I had followed all the fan accounts for years, every set piece and casting call sent out I followed. So when the movie finally came out I was beyond hyped! Twilight Eclipse came out the same weekend as The Last Airbender and my whole friend group wanted to see Twilight; I, being a fool, said "No Avatar is going to be 1000X better I am going to see that instead!" So my friends called me a loser and I dragged my boyfriend, now husband, to see The Last Airbender. The theater was empty except for 2 other teen couples. I remember being shocked with how empty the theater was but I didn't care because my favorite show was coming to life! I had a smile on my face from the moment I sat in my seat; the lights went down and I became giddy with anticipation. The movie started and my ear-to-ear smile faded being replaced by a look of pure annoyance. The opening scene with the elements being bent was what made me release the Twilight lover's were right this was going to SUCK! I sat in the theater disappointed and upset by the ending 1/3 of the movie all the couples decided to make fun of the movie, which made the experience better. When Katara says, "They became friends right away" we all burst out laughing and one girl yells "the exposition in this movie is exquisite!" Watching your reaction reminded me of how I felt seeing it for the first time and how funny some parts of the movie were even though they weren't supposed to be! Also, love your videos love from rural Wisconsin!
Part of this was filmed in Philadelphia and during production Shamalyan was on the local morning radio. He was gushing about how he's a huge fan of the series and was looking forward to giving all the fans the live action version they wanted. To this day part of the Earth Kingdom set is still at the Philly Navy Yard because they thought they'd use it for the next movie(s) that never happened.
My family and I watched the outtakes/bloopers/extras. We all agreed that the energy of the cast playing around and making mistakes was far, far closer to the spirit of the show than anything in the entire actual movie itself :’)
When The Appleton Oak said “WHY ARE THERE SO MANY WHITE PEOPLE HERE?!?!” I really felt that. It really buggs me to no end the fact that essentially the entirety of both water tribes were whitewashed AND they made the villains be people of darker skin tones (I'm pretty sure there's a name for this phenomenon but I cant quite remember it). Also, regarding the name pronunciations; most of the names in the show are Chinese/Japanese/Indian, Korean (East and South East Asian mainly) etc., inspired. So, since this is an original american cartoon; during the original tv show, they went with the AMERICAN ENGLISH pronunciation and in the movie, they tried to go with the TRADITIONAL CHINESE pronunciation (hence, Iroh sounding like Yeh-Roh and Aang sounding like Ong and so on). Which theoretically speaking is in fact the correct way to pronounce those names, but I think it would've been better if they: EITHER a) Had gone with the traditional Chinese pronunciations since the origin of the tv show OR b) If they had kept the american english pronunciations for the sake of CONSISTENCY Anyways, props to you guys for watching this film (which does not exist in Ba-Sing-Se), it's a tough one
What is also as bad was that originally the whole cast was going to be all white. Zuko was going to be played by Jesse McCartney then they recasted him when they got a lot of criticism for it.
I dont think you can pull the race card about the villains being changed to indian when the person who did it is indian. Also, Iroh in the movie is not pronounced Yeh-roh and aang isnt pronounced ong. Iroh is pronounced /iro/ and aang is pronounced /ang/ (where the everloving fuck did you pull that o from. Clean your ears)
@@lostchild06 if they had the main cast be Asian like in the show and had maybe a few people who are just playing extras that are black or white then I would’ve been fine with that but the main cast should have been Asian .
I dont even mind the water tribe being white. I mean, they do live on the poles. So they definitely arent dark skinned. But then they would have to go with that principle and give the nations their own ethical identity AND stick to it.
@@PresidentScrooge You do know/realize that the northern/southern water tribes are largely based off various inuit/native people right? They literally are not supposed to be white and they are definitely supposed to be darker-skinned... like obviously not african dark or even indian/pacific islander/southeast asian dark, but come on, what are you actually on? The whole reason Yue's hair is bizarre is because the people are generally dark of skin and darker of hair... L take fam
that water tribe warcry had me dying with laughter when I first watched that scene. acting, casting, editing, direction, writing, dialog, vfx... it is truely amazing how they managed to completely fail in every single aspect. this movie needs to be preserved and studied by future filmmakers on how not to make a film. and also for the lulz. s#%t's hilarious.
One good thing about this movie was I never noticed how nice our theater looked during the movie. It was still bright enough to look around, and it was a bit ornate. The movie rarely distracted me from looking at the more interesting walls, and designs.
oh noooo i didn't realize the natural progression of the ATLA series would lead in to the live action I feel so bad for them but thanks for the reaction
WOW that Pitch meeting was almost therapeutic, I kinda needed that after the bits of the movie we were presented with... I always stayed away from the movie bc I heard how sht it is but I figured I could make it with you guys.
I legit walked out after the Earthbending scene were it takes 8 guys to slowly throw a tiny boulder. The only positive of this movie was that Saychelle Gabriel, the girl who plays Yue, ended up getting a major voice role in the Legend of Korra, and she absolutely crushed it.
You guys encapsulated the feelings of ATLA fans around the world and this reaction was so entertaining to watch (thank you Answer for being willing to rewatch this dumpster fire again) #justiceforappa
There’s only one thing I absolutely love in this movie, and it’s Yue’s sacrifice. I love the idea of her hair turning back to brown after the spirit moves back into the fish. But other than that…
I was 16. I just got my license. My two best friends and I were obsessed with the show and couldn’t have been more hyped about the movie. When I tell you I was excited about a film… I can’t even tell you. I had a dedicated notebook to taking notes about the production, the casting, the premier date… all of it! We show up to the theater. And I knew. I KNEW something was wrong when we showed up and we were 3 of 5 people in the screen room. Then…THEN. the opening scene with the 4 elements and then Katara narrating the beginning and I knew… I knew it was over. Every time a name was said wrong my soul died a little… the acting, the writing… those, like, 8 earthbenders sending one rock floating across the screen at 5 miles an hour *facepalm*, and they did Appa SO👏🏻DIRTY👏🏻My god… I’ve never, NEVER been more disappointed in a movie in my life. I can’t even call it a film. It doesn’t even deserve that! Talk about scarred for life! Over a decade later, and I still use this movie as the reason I set my expectations low for every movie that looks “promising”.
I actually saw the live-action movie before the series, and thought it was a fine kids fantasy movie. But after finally seeing the series itself, I then understood why the fans were upset!
OH NO WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS TO YOURSELF 😭. I’ll never forget I was a kid when this came out and my dad knowing I was a big fan got us tickets to watch this in 4D. I was so excited. The names being wrong bothered me off rip. And the memory I Carry lost with me is since it was 4D, when they were on the water, it felt like I got sprayed on the heels with windex 😂. But the worst of it, IT TAKES 6 PEOPLE TO MOVE A ROCK SLOW AF 😭😭😭 I swear this movie gave me ptsd and I struggle to trust live actions movies and I ain’t till reviews now till I go to the theaters which sadly means spoilers sometimes. But I’d rather be spoiled then something like this atrocity happening to me again.
Amen! I've never been able to vocalize why I hated love actions until now. Thank you for this clarity. Mind you, I was married with a step child when I watched this and it gave be ptsd and I don't trust love actions since then.
The name is wrong in the cartoon. They corrected some of it in the movie. These are Asian names and americans butchered it. Especially for Aang. Movie pronunciation is correct. It bothers me every time the american way came on. Lol.
Thank goodness that I did not watch this movie in the theaters because I had a gut feeling it was gonna be bad, and I was right. I'm sorry you and everybody had to go through that watching it in theaters.
Aang actually was lent the power by the ocean spirit while he was in the avatar state in Book 1 finale, that’s why he looked fish-like as the water monster. The Ocean spirit was angry bc the moon spirit was killed. Aang didn’t kill Zhao, the ocean spirit released Aang from the water monster when the moon spirit was brought back and then, by itself, grabbed Zhao and pulled him into the water. (Find out what happened to Zhao in The Legend of Korra!!!!)
Yeah. They completely rewrote it. Its not even that the wave was a bad idea. The Ocean Spirit surely can create a huge ass wave. But they completely changed the lore how Zhao got killed and how the fire nation got beaten.
I remember going with my best friend to watch this in theaters and the moment they pronounced Sokka's name wrong was when I knew it was gonna be shit; and then sealed the deal when I saw Appa's face.
Can I just say how awesome it is that you guys went off the raging volcano of emotions that is avatar the last Airbender… to this movie. The oaks reaction was exactly how I felt during the movie pretty much all the way through. Mason Quinn definitely was giving it a lot of generosity or at least enjoying the reaction of his amigos.
15:40 "You know i could really go for some 'Thor: Love & Thunder' right now" 🤣🤣🤣 Gotta be the funniest dig ever on this movie. Oak's anger for this movie is hilarious.
Only seven minutes in and I've never related more to Oak and his expressions/opinions 😂 edited to say, I really think they should've cast Hiroyuki Sanada as Firelord Ozai. I think he would've KILLED that role.
@@MrBrock314 I don’t think I’ve ever seen him as a true villain either, I think the closest probably would’ve been his role in Lost but… that wasn’t really him being a villain either. Much like in The Last Samurai, he was just trying to protect his people. He also has the intense presence that I think Ozai really needed, and, to be completely fair, he looks insanely similar to the animated version of Ozai 😂
I watched this movie on its opening night for a midnight showing. Three screens were reserved and I'm fairly certain each theater was packed. Some people dressed as their favorite characters, but everyone was excited. As we all sat in that dark theater, I will never forget the immediate reactions during the Katara's title crawl. "Ovatar? Is that how they're pronouncing it?" a few people whispered nearby. Surely, they would at least get the names right. Right? Right? As the movie progressed, the energy in the room sank. For me, I felt deeply conflicted. On the one hand, I loved the series and this was a worse adaptation (and less accurate) than what the Ember Island Players put on. On the other hand, I loved (and love) watching unintentionally terrible movies. Sadly, this conflict remains, and does for many others. The remedy? Convince others to watch it with them, and thereby experience a small amount of joy from their pain (schadenfreude, as the Germans would say) which is able to provide something positive from this otherwise Hindenburg-disaster of a movie. That's why you had so many comments wanting you to watch this. Half your audience urging you not to did so because they hated it, and the other half of your audience also hated it and knew you would too.
My older brother is still miffed to this day he spent $12 on a movie ticket to go see this movie with his friend as a post-college graduation treat to himself. LOL
Oh god, I saw the notification for this and was like NOOO GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING, DON’T DO THIS TO YOURSELVES!!! In response to your question, Quinn, let me be completely honest when I say that as a HUGE fan of ATLA I was SO pumped to go see this when it came out in theaters. My sister and I walked into that Regal Cinemas on top of the world, excited a whole new group of people who maybe tend to discount animation as a medium would get to be inducted into this epic tale...it didn’t take two minutes for our hearts to drop into our shoes. The moment they said “Ahvatar,” it was over. The moment those white, emotionless drones masquerading as Sokka and Katara showed up on screen, it was over. The moment it took ten men doing a kata to float a single rock across the screen, something in our souls died. We sat stone-faced and seething through that entire film, then walked out in silence afterwards. It legitimately felt like we were the Gaang walking out of the Ember Island Players performance, downcast and shellshocked. To quote Zuko (and I think this was genuinely my comment in the moment too) “That...wasn’t a good play.” “Sohkka.” “Ahng.” “Eeroh.” The complete lack of humor, life, joy. The utter WHITENESS of the Water Tribe, when their culture was indeed inspired by the Inuit, Yupik, Yakut, and other indigenous and Arctic cultures, and Katara and Sokka had the most melanin out of anyone in the main crew in ATLA. HEINOUS. The TERRIBLE TERRIBLE casting and characterization all around. The sprint-through of an entire Book at the speed of (a brittle bare bones) plot, with no character growth or interpersonal relations (the MAIN strength of the OG show, IMO) in sight. The SLOW, PONDEROUS, WEAK CGI bending. Retconning the beautiful worldbuilding of the show...and for what? I feel bad for the handful of genuinely great actors who were roped into this film - in particular, I ADORE Dev Patel (Zuko) (seriously, check him out in The Green Knight, Slumdog Millionaire, David Copperfield, he’s brilliant and hilarious) - because sometimes the script and directing is just so bad there’s literally nothing you can do to give a good performance. But most of these chumps they hired? Nothing behind those eyes. No believable emotion. No comprehension of their characters. Terrible child actors heading the cast - Aang, at LEAST, needed to be good. They just picked the first kid trained in martial arts they could find. Awful. Do better, M. Night. He wanted the spectacle, and forgot the soul. Just. Tone-deaf, money-grubbing bullshit on the part of Shyamalan. He didn’t understand the show, he didn’t get why it was good, he just saw something popular he could rope a whole generation into buying tickets for and went with it. My sister and I were DEVASTATED. And the trauma returns every time I see someone else experience this shitshow for the first time - no matter how much of a warning they get, no one is EVER prepared for just how BAD it is. Also, I guess you guys aren’t aware - there IS another live action adaptation in the works. Currently. It’s been cast (with the correct nationalities at least, thank fuck) and I believe they’ve started filming too. NATURALLY, when I first heard about it I was like “oh no, not again.” Originally Bryan and Mike (the creators of the show) were on the production/writing team, which gave me a little hope for it, but they ended up dropping out during pre-production because of “creative differences” so...yeah. Another heart-in-the-shoes moment. I’m not holding out much hope for it. But I DO believe it will be at least marginally better than this once it/if it ever airs! Can’t imagine anything being worse than this pile of flaming crap. It hurt to see you guys suffer through this one. I screamed at the screen along with you, believe me. 💚💚💚
I cna accept the name pronounciation cuz the animated show did not pronounce those names how it really should be... of course this world is not really the asian countries either, so the show's way of having the names pronoucned would be the right one.
@@kinagrill And the Avatar world itself doesn't have the Latin alphabet. The official spellings for everyone's names can be seen as a translation from their writing system into ours, so if anything, it'd make sense to change the spellings but not the pronunciations.
@@AstraIVagabond Indeed. But I can still accept some pronounciation change cuz the native way for a lot of those natives would be pronounced differently for real-world comparison. But the fact the movie is shit, the effects are woefully underwhelming and the fact that they rush a whole season into a single movie.... that's just BAD.
I think we can still stay cautiously hopeful for the Netflix show to be honest. It seems like Bryan and Mike left because Netflix is changing up the story in some ways, but truthfully it seems like they have people who really knew and loved the original show and could have some genuinely interesting story tweaks. No one should expect it to be the greatest show of all time or anything, but I think with learning from the mistakes of ATLA the movie and just shoveling a SHIT ton of money into this show that Netflix will give us something solid.
They way that they pronounced some of the names was just absolutely ridiculous 😂. It completely takes you out of it because all you’re thinking is “That’s not how you say that”
@@RonLarhz ITs a fantasy series bucko not real life, just because it was inspired by Asian cultures does not mean that its not still a fantasy with fantasy names and that the in-universe pronounciations of everything are the exact same as real life. They are correct for THAT fantasy canon, trying to demand that they MUST be the same as an equilivent name irl is just you not understanding how fiction works. (Also proving you don't know how youtube works. there's a sea of comments here dude, why should anyone be able to magically see yours bundled in amongst the rest)
