With some modifications it would be one hell of a zombie apocalypse vehicle. - small plow at each end -mg turret -solar panels -larger fuel tanks -light armor -caged windows -flood lights on all sides
The Catco haulers not only distribute their weight so widely that they can (under certain conditions) roll over a man's legs without harming him, but they never experience wheelspin because the drive force is transferred to the top of each air bag using a wide friction roller, rather than being driven through the axle. This protects the surface they are traveling over, and prevents ever digging in.
I don't think how the tires are spun affects anything. I think the reason they're driven from the top instead of the middle is simply because it makes the drive shafts shorter and simpler with fewer joints. It could also be used to increase ground clearance to be greater than the wheel radius. I think the vehicle doesn't get stuck simply because of the low ground pressure combined with having so many wheels providing tractive force (like 4WD)
I am a retired Amy Prime Power Production Specialist and was hired just prior to retirement date by Detroit Diesel and worked on large and smaller generators from the north slope to Belize, the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Malaysia, on Marine propulsion, marine generators and land based generators. Great job but, the North Slope sucks as does the fishing fleet along the Aleutian Islands/Dutch harbor…since I am 6’5”. Field service is a great job but, I never saw one of the cool vehicles up there.
The MF 60 in the hands of a farmer from Ukraine... Russian tank: " We're advancing into Ukraine at 45 mph.." Russian HQ: "Excellent... Wait a minute - you can't be driving that fast!" Russian tank: "We didn't think that either - and we're doing in reverse...."
