Hi guys, if you enjoy our calm slow garden videos, you might also like to check out Mossy Bottom 😊 He is a popular guy from the UK, and we really like his channel. He had been living on a farmstead in Ireland and recently moved to Finland. The channel is about gardening, house and barn restorations, self-sufficiency and sustainable living on a homestead 💚 If you'd like, you can start for example with this relaxing video from his homestead in Ireland: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-shR4xhM-Obk.htmlsi=KoS-rMgO2QC3MHdO

Every couple is a "garden" It's truly beautiful to see a couple who loves each other but also completes each other, some in the kitchen, some in the garden like you and not only that but also through many different passions that are cultivated together. You are a beautiful example. - R and D 🍎🍒🍰🍪😍

Hi guys, top tip from an old boy who has made gallons of elderflower wine over many years, use a dining fork to pull the flowers from the stems, it's so much quicker than using your fingers. Always collect the elderflower florets when they are in full sunshine as that's when they produce the most scent. Great video, always fun to see Peter giving a cooking tutorial and the garden is looking like it's going to be very productive this year.
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter 2 месяца назад
Thank you for the tip 😉 People already advised me to do that with elderberries and it went so well when we were making a liqueur from the berries last year. Not sure why I didn't think of it this year with the flowers 😁 Home-made elderflower wine sounds great, we have to try making it one day 😊

Cooking with Peter never fails to deliver . Have you considered getting a Kitchen Aid stand mixer? I can easily make so many things that I can no longer do with my hands (helpful for the aged 😊). Thanks for the video ❤❤
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter 2 месяца назад
Thank you, Greg 😉 We have quite a big food processor with various functions in the city, but I don't actually use it that much. So I haven't felt the need for another machine, also Kitchen Aid would be quite expensive for us. We'll see in the future but for now I just like simpler recipes where I can do everything quite easily 😊

Hi Matthew, thank you 😉 We plant quite a lot of various flowers, and we also transform some parts to a wildflower meadow, so bees and many various insects love it here. There are beehives in the surroundings, so for now that is enough 😊

The tops of your garlic plants are edible. I forget what they are called. Thanks a lot for your usual great content.
@tommyandpeter

They are called garlic scapes - we eat them. For us the best is to cook them for a while with a bit of oil and salt. Yummy 😊 Glad you liked the video, thanks 😉

If you can get it, it might be an idea to put straw underneath your strawberries. This will help protect them from the slugs and snails, but also keep them clean. The fruits are so so low to the ground that when it rains, the splash back will coat them in mud !
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter 2 месяца назад
Thank you. We know it is often done and we've been thinking about it, but it's never high on our priority list, because we usually have million other tasks to do. And it's not that hard to wash the strawberries in water when they are a bit muddy 😁 And luckily for us, it seems that slugs in our garden prefer other plants and they let the strawberries be 😀

@@tommyandpeter The straw would also help them not get mouldy when they are in contact with wet soil.
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter 2 месяца назад
We pick them every other day, so luckily there is not much time for them to get moldy. It would be better with the straw of course, but for now the losses because of this have been small, so it's ok. We'll see in the future.

Think about clipping off the flowering tops of your garlic so that more energy goes into the bulbs. You can use the tops in various recipes. I saute them with shrimp or with omelettes. It's so nice that you have no animal problems in your garden. I can't grow anything outside of a tall fence because of rabbits, deer, and ground hogs! Sad. 🙂
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter 2 месяца назад
Yes, we clip the flowers on garlic off and we eat them. We like cooking them with a bit of oil and salt for a few minutes, they are tasty 😊 We have various bugs and pests, also slugs (their season is starting now), but luckily no big animals that would harm the garden. Sorry to hear about your problems, that sounds like quite a battle 🫤

I'm going to try your recipe Peter but without the elderflowers, I'm reluctant to eat raw or cooked flowers. I know it's s preconception but I can't help it. My granny used to grow some very fragant roses with very thin petals that she used to sprinkle on hot rice. It was never my thing. Guys, those spinach(es) are beautiful and look very tender. I can't wait to see all those veggies and fruits grow and you prepare exquisite recipes. Kisses and hugs. Until next time.
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter 2 месяца назад
Thank you, Liliana 😉 Elderflowers are very common here, people use them in sweet drinks and stuff like that mostly, they have a very nice flavor (better than other flowers). But we understand, when somebody is not used to eating flowers, it could feel weird. Spinach has been a nice success every year, so we like having it in the garden, of course 😁 We can't wait either for the veggies to grow big 😊
@tommyandpeter

You could maybe use a bit of raisins instead of the flowers. But the cookies would be great even without anything, I think 😊

I've never heard of cooking with elderflowers which sounds really interesting. I've made elderberry preserves and that is a real treat. I don't know anything about honey berries, will have to check to see if they grow in the US. and lemon balm - grows like weeds under our 60 meter tall redwood trees which shade our front yard, limiting our gardening. I'm anxiously awaiting the potato harvest from the straw bed. That is fascinating!
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter 2 месяца назад
When you have a chance, you can try making the cookies, they are really tasty 😁 Honeyberries are also called haskap berries, or something like that. We've seen videos of people growing them in the US, so it shouldn't be a problem 😊 They taste kinda similar to blueberries, but don't need the acidic soil. Yeah, we know that lemon balm spreads a lot, but we don't mind, we have a big garden and it would definitely be better than our terrible grass 😀 We are also curious about the potatoes, but nobody knows yet how it will end up with them 😁
@michaelcnicholls
@michaelcnicholls 2 месяца назад
@@tommyandpeter I've learned you need two varieties of honey berries to pollinate, and unfortunately only one variety grows in our 'planting zone' 9B. So I guess that is why I've never heard of them as we don't have them in our area of Northern California.

It looks like all your plants don’t require water other than rain. Are you worried about drought? You must also have fencing to keep out rabbits and deer.
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter 2 месяца назад
We wish! 😁 Our plants do require water and we have to water them, we have garden hoses and we pump water from our well. The country house is in quite a dry area actually and we always hope for precipitation (in summer it's mainly thunderstorms, which are quite random). We got lucky in the recent moths with wetter weather, so we haven't had to water much ⛈️ Our property is fenced, so there are no rabbits or deer in our garden.

Never cooked with actual flower petals before in cookies. Wish that I could taste one. What is the flavor like? Best if eaten with ________. From where did this recipe originate?
@tommyandpeter
@tommyandpeter 2 месяца назад
The flavor is very gentle, sweet, flowery, a bit like honey. Don't know if you ever had elderflowers (sweet drinks with their flavor for example), it's like their scent is in the cookies. The cookies are best just like that, a snack or a sweet treat, you can drink coffee or tea with them 😊 I found inspiration for the cookies on the internet and adjusted it for myself 😊
