Wind is really a big killer. Driving in west Texas to New Mexico and back we found ourselves with 30-50mph winds that doubled the energy required in our Model 3.

@@jason2live190 - Actually, they are way ahead of the game. Factories built to produce nothing but the EV's they design, nationwide charging and an owner who won't back down to big auto/big oil. If it were up to the major car companies and big oil, EV's would go away.

Oh if you haven't made a trip to Space Center Houston then it would be fantastic. Make sure to do the tour with an actual Astronaut. Its kind of pricey but worth it.

Heating or cooling. You will need one or the other most of the time no matter where you are. Cooling is probably cheaper than heating

These 2 - "vehicle speed" and "hvac use" are true even for gas powered cars. In my car with smooth vehicle driving involving coasting and no crazy accelerating and not using heater or a/c unless it is super cold or hot or using the fan without a/c and I can get nearly 30% higher range in my gas powered car. Just simply driving better the car performs better.

There's no way to judge value of a vehicle until you bought used and sold it. High depreciation can be the biggest cost for any vehicle. Trade the car in and then you know the true cost per mile.

Autopilot computer does use quite a bit of energy, if you are short on range it may be a good idea to drive manually for the remaining distance.

Enjoy your road trip videos. With our MX, the 20 to 30 mph headwinds in the Midwest (Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado front range, etc.) affect our range - second to temperature.

On a long trip that might be true for some, but day to day it's much easier to plug in overnight than going to gas stations. For long trips, ss time moves forward chargers will be everywhere. Also, it's a fun outing each time you charge. You make it part of the vacation. You still have the option on trips of using your gasoline car and leaving the Tesla at home. Tesla's newest superchargers have you in and out in 15 minutes -- almost as fast as gassing up. The benefits of the electric car, for me anyway, outweigh the inconvenience of charging on road trips.

@@cybertruck4988 people don't plan trips around gas stations, they just find a gas station when they need it. With the very small amount of chargers in rural areas, like the midwest or the deep south; you really have to make sure your journey is going to be within range. Not hating on Electric Vehicles I'm just saying their is room for improvement.

How to solve the two contradicting things with Tesla. Aiming under 10 % of range at destination and Sentry mode? When you come at your destination you want to start the security mode if you have to park outside. Is there an option?

I heard that once you drive your Tesla outside it's warranty period/milage, that the service department ignores you, or at least makes you less of a priority to in warranty vehicles. Is that true?

That’s kind of absurd, think about it, this is when you would receive more priority as you would now be a revenue source. However, with about 12 moving parts in the car (vs 3,000 in a gas car) there isn’t much to go bad with the car at high mileage. Data available from high mileage vehicles shows this to be true. Also, 90% of the vehicles service needs are done via a mobile visit at your home or work so that should tell you something about how much post warranty work you should expect.

I’ve owned a Tesla since January 2015. I have a Model S and an X. One thing that I think gets overlooked in battery range and efficiency is drafting. In my opinion, drafting behind a semi is the most effective way to extend range on a road trip. You should try it for yourself.

Some superchargers maintain a high rate of charge. I’ve also noticed some chargers will hit target charge points early. I set nap alarms to go off early before the car’s expected time to charge completion for this reason.

I find out the people whose owners the Tesla, has too many problems for the new car. The warranty over will cost too much for maintenance, and when the car needs repairs or replace parts. A lot the Tesla car sale back to the dealer or the whoso want.

Great info, as always --- thanks! I recently completed a long trip in my Model 3 (Boston to Charleston SC and back - 2,600 miles) and found all the same things you did. When it's not horribly freezing, the standard estimate of mileage is pretty accurate, but when it's colder it's best to use the Energy Monitor > Trip display. The supercharger network is totally amazing -- I almost always had several options, and most were located in a place that had other things to do. It's interesting -- the whole cadence of a trip becomes more relaxed and pleasant when you have half-hour breaks built in. I really don't think I would have enjoyed driving all that distance without a car like the Tesla. Now, I want more!

We travel from Ohio to Orlando every year in our 90 X taking i75 south. We hate stopping in downtown Atlanta because it seems like it’s a bad part of town. Any tips to try an by pass this stop? Or do you know of any future Superchargers going up just north or south of downtown? This is the only part of our trip we dread

The Atlanta Supercharger (the one I've been to at Atlantic Station) is far from being in a bad spot IMO. But again, that can be subjective depending on where you are coming from. :) Safe travels.
