What Wedding Dresses Around the World Look Like

Great Big Story

You are cordially invited to the wedding dress episode of “Around the World.” Great Big Story senior producer Beryl Shereshewsky talks to seven dressmakers in seven countries to learn about the special dresses they make for brides in their communities. The craftsmanship, tradition and love that goes into these gorgeous creations is truly amazing. Among the dresses featured: an elaborately beaded Native American southern Cheyenne buckskin dress from Oklahoma; a kente dress handwoven in red, yellow and green, the national colors of Ghana; and in Sweden, a traditional black taffeta folk wedding dress known as a vanga dress.

@@CrustyUgg Its thought that people from Asia were in the Americas over 20,000+ years ago. Further more there is a drastic different between Chinese culture and the Indigenous native culture of people from the Northern American continents. Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die". BUT, mercy said "I dont want to give them what they deserve. I don't want them to be cut off from Me. I love them despite all they have done/will do against Me. I want to give My children another chance. I want them to come home and live in My love again". And love said "Jesus, God's Son, came down as a Man, our representative, suffering every temptation, pain and struggle we have ever faced, yet without sin. He took all our sins (past/present/ even future) to the cross and then crucified EVERY ONE on our behalf. Justice was paid on the cross so that we can be free from Hell's punishment, experience Gods mercy of forgiveness of sin and live in His love. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (turn away from our sin and pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through Him (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to obey His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and ask Him to help us in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, or struggling or doubtful, simply be honest and tell Him that. He is not intimidated by ANY sin or struggle you are facing. ANY. He hears and will answer. If we pray for Him to come in, regardless of the condition, then He will. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. If you have any questions let me know x

All the dresses are beautiful, but what makes my heart sing is all the handwork done on these dresses. I am both a beader and a weaver. I know the many, many, many hours that went into each of these dresses, from the stunning Native American beadwork to the fabulous handwoven kente cloth. His loom is unlike any I've ever seen. It is relatively simple, and likely did not cost much to buy or make, but what stunning cloth is woven on it!

Indian brides do not only wear lehengas on their wedding day, almost every state in India have their own wedding dress and there are various types of them, but in northern India, they are worn pretty much when for the south, the outfit is completely different from a lehenga. it's called a saree, and they are made in tons of various materials like cotton, silk, polyester, etc and also a lot of mixed fabric combinations like one among them is silk-cotton the south Indian brides wear a silk saree with golden embroidery work and beautiful jewelry (sometimes pretty heavy) I've mostly talked about the south Indian wedding dress as I am a south Indian myself 😅

That's because it's not a typical British wedding dress, that lady only makes dresses for travellers, mostly Irish Travellers but also Romanies. Those dresses are tacky and overly blinged up for a non gypsy bride. She doesn't look happy as the dress weighs more than she does, the dress maker was the focus in the UK Documentary series 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding' every traveller girl wants a bigger and blingier dress than her friends, sisters, cousins etc. The dresses are usually very uncomfortable to wear all day, but still they do it. The more traditional white wedding dress worn in UK and US is not such an old tradition either, Queen Victoria was the first to wear a white wedding gown and before that any colour was used and a wedding dress would not have been designed to wear for one day only, it would be more like 'sunday best' worn on Sundays and special occasions.

As an Indonesian Minangnese woman, they nailed the wedding dress! Overall it's pretty accurate, though it's a little different. We don't usually wear modern high heels like the ones in the video (instead, black/crimson-gold shoes with wide short heels), the fingers are usually painted red with 'pacar' that colors the whole top knuckles (not just the nails), and the dress is generally crimson in most Minang lands. But this version is also really beautiful :)

I am Ghanaian, and the bridal wear Ghanaian women go with is the kente cloth sewn into “kaba and sleet” ( kaba - a top designed according to the bride’s preference ; sleet - a long skirt that fits around the hips and thighs) or the kente is sewn into a beautiful gown. Others choose to go very traditional by wrapping the kente cloth around them. There’s lots of gold and jewellery. Traditional beads are also worn on the bride. What was shown here is an attire most Ghanaian women would rather wear to church.

As a person who has learned to sew and create my own clothing out of necessity, I always love seeing photos of all kinds of different clothing, especially gowns, prom gowns, event gowns/dresses, and wedding gowns. These people are very talented, and have their head in the right space. Their bottom line of most importance aspects is the feelings of the bride. They care most that the bride feels beautiful, and comfortable in their creation they make for them. Keeping your head and heart in a good place will flow through you and be detectable in what you are creating. These folks make beautiful gowns. 💜

Indonesia consists of 34 provinces and each province has its own traditional wedding dresses. As featured in the video, you can see more than one wedding dress from the West Sumatra province alone. So, you could expect Indonesia has 100 wedding dresses if not more. Thank you for featuring one of the many wedding dresses from my country.

Just like Indonesia, except for the miniatural countries ( like San Marino, Lichtenstein and so on) I guess every country of this planet has its many regions, with many different populations, each one with their own traditional outfits, and customes, so, with many different wedding dresses in the same country... And if someone would try to show them all...it'll take quite some time to succed...( would be a lifetime work, I guess)

@@magkal8690 While many countries consist of multiple cultures, there is a difference between the diversity Indonesia and for example Belgium have. This is because Indonesia consists of many islands that cover a large part of the ocean. The cultures interacted less with each other than those in many other countries. The amount of people is also rather large (over 250 million people), ranking 4th in population size.

I'm actually disappointed with that Indian designer. He didn't even mention once that in western, south and eastern India people usually wear saaris and not lehengas. Lehengas (the outfit shown in the video) is worn only in north Indian weddings. A great video though!

Ishita Shitut I totally came to the comments to say exactly this! If he hadn’t said it revolves around lengha choli’s I would have not have cared. My first thought was most regions have a traditional sari for their weddings. Sometimes the northern centricity bothers me. I’m Bengali, but I get frustrated that South Indian culture isn’t considered more when it come to what is “Indian”.
