What Were We Thinking? | Skinny 35's on a 2017 Tacoma!

We made the jump and had some #kenda #klevers installed on our truck. What better way to test them out, then on a 44 mile adventure up to, and around the mountains in Big Bear to so some #snowwheeling.
If you are familiar with the #Tacoma, you know how much work it can take to fit 35's .While there are lots of pros to switching to a larger tire, there are just as many cons. We selected the Kenda Clever R/T to have less front wheel clearance issues on our truck.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving us a thumbs up and subscribing. We would love to have you join us on the Open Road.

The pizza cutters rock!! I've gone down the research rabbit hole of wide vs narrow tires a few times. I've always favored wider tires until my research led me to an article on the benefits of narrow tires. It was perhaps the most authoritative and convincing article I've read on the subject. I of course have lost the bookmark but cheers to your pizza cutters! I plan to go a little narrower on my next set of tires.

After doing our research is when we decided to make the switch. We have been very happy and the truck feels right with the combination of the 5.29 gearing and the 35" Kendas! Can't wait to see how they look on the Runner.

Back in the early 70's I had a 1969 f250 running old school 7.50-17 bias ply. If I recall, they were 36 inches. Worked really well in snow That's a pizza cutter.

Nice! Great hear that you decide to go skinny! I’m on skinny 33 in my 80 series LC and love it! See many Taco with humongous 35. Skinny offer less stress and less mass rotation.

What year Tacoma... I'm going down that rabbit hole of tires... Was looking at 285s now looking at 255s... Did you get different wheels with different off set?

Did you do any wheel trimming? Are you using stock wheels or aftermarket with a different offset? Any rubbing with daily driving?

34x10.5r17 k02s on my stock jk. Just enough rub at full lock on the sway bar to take the dust off. Lighter than most so maybe rides abit higher: soft top, manual, half doors - don't know how much lift I'm getting from that compared to a more typical jk.

After doing all the research I opted for the pizza cutters too, I had 265/70-17's on my 4Runner and decided instead of going to the popular 285/70-17 (32.8"), which are actually a half inch smaller/shorter than the 255/80-17's (33.3") I got, they are also cheaper, in theory better on the trail and road and are slightly....very small difference easy on fuel mileage and steering components. One of the best reasons was, other than sliding and pinning the inner fender liner flush with the outer fender...the way Toyota should have made it to begin with, no other adjustments was necessary. I have even considered going to 255/85-17's (34.6") if I liked these when they wear out, but I really think that would require a gear swap, as the increase would be substantial.

I really wanted pizza cutter 33s but they were all mud terrains. (size 16) in a few years I think RT Is the move!

Happy that we could find the skinny 35’s that were mud terrains. The muds are a little more aggressive than we wanted to go. Pleased with the Klever RT performance so far.

@@brandonmenicucci5791I am looking at the 255/85R16 for my ‘23 Tacoma Off Road but the 17” size seems more available, I just don’t want to have to spend a few grand on wheels (I want Volk Racing TE37XT’s to drop the rolling mass/unstrung weight).

Hey, great video! Congrats on the new shoes! I love skinny tires. Use to roll skinny 33's on my ol 40, was fun as heck. Looking to get skinnies for my Ranger, just not sure what size yet. 35 is too boocoo for me, i reckon. Hahaha. Fun footage, especially with the drone. Wonderful shots. Thank you for sharing. Yes, we regeared prior to switching to 35s. We ran 5.29s with our 33s. That was probably too aggressive with the 33s, but it feels “right” now with the 35s.

I am over in 🇳🇿 and i run a 265/75R16 currently (which is just shy of a 32x10.50R16) on my 90 series and i go almost everywhere guys go with 35's i do very well in the sand as the contact patch is better on a 10.50 than it is on a 12.50 unless your running super low pressure and beadlocks When i can save up for BTF's 4.5" long travel kit ill get Kenda Klever MT2 35x10.50R17's as they are the best value in a narrow MT to many people buy tires with their egos and do no research on how they actually perform! Lol 😂

How would you reckon a Tacoma with 1.1 inch lift would do with these? Stock SR5 Trail, which has 1.1 in front and .5 in back. Thanks!
@OpenRoad4Two
@OpenRoad4Two Год назад
In the back, you’d probably be ok, but We had rubbing with 33’s and three inches of lift. We had to do a lot of trimming and body mount chop/relocate to fix most of the rubbing. Still get occasional rubbing at full lock to the left and under load.
