I try to made my wetsuits last longer by drying in the shade flat and inside out. I always rinse the wetsuit in a massive bucket of fresh water after surfing. Made some dumb mistakes with my first ever cheap wetsuit. Since then, I try to look after my wetsuits and leave my older (leaking through shoulders or wherever) wetsuits for warmer days or weekend surf lifesaving patrol duties like rubber duck rescue boat. My best and 2nd best wetsuits are reserved for surfing. I tend to choose durability of wetsuit as my main criteria. It can be expensive making a wrong decision or not looking after your wetsuit and having to buy another one much sooner than required.

Two days ago i bought my first wetsuit. I chose a 4/3 (to be flexible with changing weather conditions) with backzipper. I ended up with the same brand as my surfschool uses. The frontzipper was just too difficult to put on; i tried several brands. Hopefully i will lose some weight with surfing (and eating habits). Perhaps that can ease the process of putting on a wetsuit. Let’s get ripped 😉

Kool..often the higher priced suits though warmer at first and more flexible sometimes only last a few seasons at most... with the cold waters i,m mostly in, i like to buy a new wetsuit at least once a year but this year I had to switch brand due to the high demand and low stock

Yes good point.

I was also told that: most expensive wetsuit does not equal longer lasting. They might dry faster or the brand name is cool but after a while, they feel the same as the middle range wetsuits.

@@pokeypickle3 The expensive brands tend not to last as long. they are built to impress the pro surfers for a season or even a few sessions or so..I find after 10 sessions they lose at least 15 percent of their integrity and after a year it,s time for a new suit..I,m yet to compare to cheaper brands but this year had no choice other than a patagonia and among other things the zip broke after 3 months but I hear they have a good repair policy

I always go to a decent surf shop where good staff give good advice on wetsuit and they are not trying to flog a brand that they are trying to get out of the door. I rather pay a bit more for service. My favourite shop use to give me a decent discount every time until COVID suddenly increased the demand for wetsuits. I ever got myself a new wetsuit for my 50th birthday last year.

Great tips, good local knowledge definitely makes all the difference.

Ask other surfers, especially those of similar build to you, where they get their wetsuits. Eventually, you will get a feel where the best place is for you. Inquire at a few shops first. As a beginner, it seems daunting having to spend all that money on wetsuits but as a beginner, your body is not yet “trained” for the shock of that cold water when you first jump in. Just look after your wetsuit and it will last longer.

One of my wetsuits ripped apart upon my second or third wear. Thankfully I returned it to this fantastic shop and they repaired it. It’s still a great wetsuit now but not my favourite. This is why I am hesitant about buying online. Maybe if I was buying lots of wetsuits each, I would know my products, brands, etc better but nothing feels as good as trying a few wetsuits in a shop and having to settle on my “best” choice while getting an additional discount (prior to COVID).

I think you should go in to a surf shop and try every brand you can, see what you like best...

Hi in a how to rip video (you’re riding the wrong surfboard here’s why) you recommended a performance small wave board. But in a different video you recommended a fish. Which one do I buy
@TheSurfersJourney
@TheSurfersJourney 3 года назад
Hey Brett, it depends on your ability, the waves and how you want to surf. Unfortunately it is not a simple answer...I would recommend a fish / hybrid for small / mushy waves, and as the waves get a little better, go to a high performance small wave board. But that is just my opinion and what has worked well for me. What is your ability Brett and what kind of waves are you surfing most of the time?

Hi!! I just bought a new 6.0x 18 3/8x 27 lt... i'm in an intermediate level and in your opinion it's better to start by broken or unbroken waves to adapt the body to the new board? (Sorry for my english,i'm italian 🤞🏻)
@xaviertripierdelaubriere9678
@xaviertripierdelaubriere9678 3 года назад
When you're starting surf, you might think that broken waves are "easier" to take than unbroken ones... but below a certain size of board, this just stops to be true! Because broken wave have little strength, and they will not provide you enough speed. So when you'll try to pop up, your board will just drown under your weight. So the best is to try on small unbroken waves, until you find the right sensation. And if you struggle too much, come back to the foam board for a few sessions (on unbroken waves of course)
@brettfadner3476
@brettfadner3476 3 года назад
Also about when you recommended a small wave performance board, does it have to be the same exact dimensions it can it be a little different. Btw is a 6 ft fish too big for a 13 yo. Sorry for so many questions
