The House of Representatives passed a bill that could ban TikTok if the popular app does not separate from its Chinese parent company ByteDance. The vote was bipartisan and passed in a landslide even after millions of users spoke out against the ban. NBC’s Savannah Sellers reports in this week’s Sunday Focus.

You should ask "Why don't young people use these apps?" It's not that they can't use them, it's that they don't want to use them as much as TikTok. And the answer is simple: it's because TikTok has a better algorithm to make people spend more time on the app. Clearly, all apps want their users to stay longer on their apps, but TikTok has won the competition because more young people spend their time on TikTok than the rest of these apps combined.

In all seriousness, though, a TikToker job is similar to a normal job in someways, but it’s pretty different in a lot of ways. If I get laid off from a plumbing job, I can go get another plumbing job because I would have a tangible useful skill that a company could help me market for consumption. A tiktoker’s product is intangible and somewhat useless, and everything that is “produced” is owned by the company, everything that is produced is also produced on the company’s ‘canvas’, so to speak. When that company leaves, the canvas leaves, there is nothing for you to produce, and you can’t go get another TikTok job. The best you can do is start over on another platform.

The United States will be greatly affected. TikTok is such a beloved app, but in many ways, it's had negative affects, with the things people do on there, the things people say. I'm not a fan of TikTok myself, but I want to keep seeing people doing what they love. Lots of young and aspiring talent on that app. I'm honestly nervous for it.

I'm old enough to clearly remember life without the internet. If it stopped functioning tomorrow, it would take me about 1 day to adjust. Social media companies are even less meaningful (except that they make their owners exceedingly rich). So what is all the hub-bub about Tiktok, anyway? China has long banned numerous American/internet-based businesses, including Google and Facebook. I don't hear anyone complaining about that.

Was TikTok user for about 4 years, but after 2022 it became a place for russian and Chinese propaganda, I literally saw how separatists stream freely, tho I have used every single in-app security measure to avoid such unwanted content, and it still got through the random recommendations. All the report tickets were left without a reply. I think the reason is that TikTok owners can't handle non Chinese/English language videos or comments properly, thus this app is definitely dangerous. Uninstalling it was the best decision, I can't explain it, but after some "nostalgia" period I totally forgot about it and absolutely not interested in any TikTok videos anymore, I've got free from this addiction. I won't argue if TikToker is a real job or not, just saying that there are other social video services with the exactly the same functionality.

If TikTok gets banned and removed from the App stores, Android provides the means to let users install apps that are no longer in the App store, All it takes is downloading the apk file, and setting your android devices to allow unknown apps, Then you'll be able to use TikTok, However for Iphone users, They won't be able to install TikTok outside of the app store because Apple's own devices are part of a closed system, and don't allow apps outside of the app store to be installed, Unless they somehow jailbreak those phones, Which then allows people to install other apps not in the app store.

The problem is users would have a point if it was not for the fact that Tik Tok was caught tracking jounalists which is the very heart of the issue. If it was a simple cash grab Tik tok would have the high ground on this but with the fact that Tik Tok being owned by Byte Dance is problematic

TikTok users are naïve. They only have to move to an other platform. RU-vid does offer this option of Short video in the same format as TikTok and X formerly Twitter now offer a video platform inthe same style as TikTok. So content creators do have multiple options and social platforms to continue their work.
