For Black History Month, I specifically wanted to include a Love poem. As a poet, it can be very easy to get consumed by the volume of tragedy and depression that marks human existence. Hate has a tendency to comfortably rest inside all human hearts. Thus, constantly exploring trauma can become a poetical burden to bear.
However, when it comes to simple expressions of Love or of Hope, a hesitancy often caresses my pen into submission. Such emotional ideas can sometimes come across as passive, cheesy, awkward or unsure. There's so much that I have to say about Love but I seem to stumble at the first hurdle.
This poem captures the hesitations that I always feel as a writer. If I could create a poem to usher in world peace, I would write it in a heartbeat. But I'm aware of my own limitations as an artist and a man. I want to see the silver linings no matter how dark the clouds may be. Optimism is a hard sell in a cruel and unforgiving world.
My words may fail in their clumsy effort to promote such a simple emotion. But something has to lead us towards a path of forgiveness and future repair. At best, we can only attempt to temporarily banish hatred's comfort from our own hearts. So I offer this poem about Love as a start.
