What Would Avatar: The Way of Water At 120 FPS Look Like?

Did you know Avatar 2: The Way of Water is going to feature scenes shot at 120 fps (HFR)? I used an AI program to interpolate some scenes from the original Avatar this higher frame rate, to see what this could look like.
NOTE: Please watch at 720p or above to get 60 fps and the full effect.
Let me know if you think if high frame rate looks better (and in which situations) in the comments down below!
✨ Programs used:
-I used Video Enhance AI Chronos model to interpolate the framerate from 24 fps to 120 fps (free trial, then paid): topazlabs.com/...

-I used DaVinci Resolve (video editor) to add the motion blur. You can get Resolve here:

So... CGI movies at 120fps just look uncanny, because they look like videogame cutscenes and you keep expecting the cutscene to flow into gameplay but it never does.

The reason things look funky is the lack of motion blur. Low FPS (24, for example) almost simulate motion blur making it more "realistic"

I saw motion blur at 0:40 (pause at this moment to inspect the blur on the spacecraft).

It's overblurry, Minimum shutter speed for 60fps is 1/60, 120fps is 1/120 and here 24fps with a 180 degree shutter (1/48)

Try taking the original 24fps footage and layering it over the 120/60fps footage and setting the opacity to 50%. That way it would merge the motion blur with the high frame rate footage, then render at 120/60fps.

Avatar running at +24fos turns into a cinematic modern videogame cutscene even gameplay.... see the intro as an example arriving at Pandora, very game-ish.

Peter jackason tried... people didnt really enjoyed in the hobbit, but its because his CGI already looked bad and his scrips was garbage. I've got a TV that has a variable frame rate function and I I always watch Avatar like that....brings CGI to life.

Higher frame rates allow for depth cues that are lost when displayed at 24 fps. I have a theory that this loss of depth information makes the brain think of what it's viewing in a different manner. It's sort of like an impressionist painting, where the brain tries to make sense of the painting and imagines details that don't exist. In the case of low frame rates, the temporal resolution makes the brain do something similar. I'm guessing some viewers prefer that getting-lost in the subconscious blur. They like the dreamy nature of no depth cues.
@chris.murdock
@chris.murdock Год назад
@@ii-cr1go yes, also, remeber that 24fps (23.976) makes movies feel more cinematic, but when come to CGI its not good frame rate because its already hard to fool the brain with good visuals and playing at low frame rate makes that disconnect more apparent. A variable frame rate should fix that issue in a way that will change the industry, we are watching movies with an old technique, its time to evolve. Im glad to live in the time of James Cameron.

It looks way better. Emulating motion blur is not as natural as real motion blur, because you lose lots of detail.

For everyone saying that it looks worse or that it feels like a videogame, that's only because you're used to movies at 24 fps. But it sucks. Movies absolutely need to update to 60 fps minimum, and while it might feel weird for some at first, it's just a matter of getting used to it. The industry will finally be pushed further once we stop holding back for these silly reasons

It looks like a computer game animation or in live shots, the lack of blur makes it look like cheap 80s television. That is what many said about the HFR version of The Hobbit, that it looked like a bad TV show. I think if you want to shoot in 120fps to capture detail, you have to put it through advanced computer filters like the director of Monsters did. He shot that on DSLR cameras! But there was an expensive plugin that takes ages to convert each frame into a 'film' look, much like Instagram used to do to our bad photos. I think the rendering took three times as long as the shoot on Monsters. So the technology is there. It's a shame Jackson didn't use it, probably because he ran out of time. He was 9 months behind schedule the day he was given the job. James Cameron has been taking his time on A2 and has been camped in Wellington at Weta Digital for over a year now, or close to that. And the film isn't out until December, and may get pushed if we get a new nasty variant.
@putty-e2872

filters hide imperfection by blurring the whole screen, for example in a RU-vid video called "The Backrooms (Found Footage)" the artist use blurry VHS filter to make CGI room looks real.

Because it's badly upscaled. Upscaling introduce lots of artefacts to the fast moving scenes, but they are actually the ones that benefit of high frame rate especially in 3D.

No, it’s actually the other way around. HFR (high frame rate = 48 fps) is ideal for action scenes and SFR (standard frame rate = 24 fps) is welcome at scene in each immersion is a product of daily life interactions

@CaptRabau As a further challenge, could you find the filters that Gareth Edwards used on Monsters and apply those to the HFR Avatar footage. It should be cheap now as Monsters came out over a decade ago, so the plugin might be available. Or a trial of it. Then see how the footage looks when put through a 'classic 32mm 24fps film' filter that changes the look but not the frame rate.

Looks cool & smooth but I just realise now that Avatar's graphic is no better than todays video games, lol. The HFR also made everything looks sharper so you can actually see the graphics; at "Arriving at Pandora" the polygon looks high-res (no pointy edge) but the texture obviously is low-res (blurry) and the lighting (shadows & highlights) is flat almost felt like Babylon 5's CGI would look like in my mind if it was high-res.
