i just heard unbroken chain to hear where AC samples the dead. Phil Lesh sings, "Willow sky, whoa i walk and wonder why" AC samples the whoa i walk and sky part to make it sound like he's saying what would i want sky. it sounds very familiar but thats actually what he's saying. wow this is why these guys are geniuses.

the 7/8 timing is doing wonders in my head. this band knows how to play with rythem.

This decade in music belongs to Animal Collective. What a fucking evolution from Here Comes the Indian to this.

I see it more as a progression of their current sound. Their creativity and ability remain unscathed! I love this song, it was amazing live

ac is so amazing. i saw them at lollapalooza - pretty high - and the experience is burned into my brain. this song in particular. and i agree with Evans. whether i'm high or not, i feel high when i listen to ac. their music just slips its way into your brain and effects you.

Wow, that was really beautiful. AC just keep on surprising me with their consistency. Ever since MPP was released, I was worried that that record would be too good to top. But then they make a new song, and it's amazing.

Yeah, it's Lesh, specifically a cut-up sample from the Dead song "Unbroken Chain". Apparently they sent him the track and he loved it.

I love how on this song and in For Reverend Green you can headbob to it when the beat starts and as the song goes on you'll end up headbobbing alternately on the onbeat and offbeat every measure. :D EPIC song!

I generally don't dig these guys, but this one is pretty good.

I agree totally. Animal Collective has a sound like no-other band that I have heard before. If you where to take away all the genres of music and just describe a band by how it made you feel, I would describe the music as something that can change your perception of reality, makes me feel sick in the stomach, lonely and intrigued all at the same moment. Then again, if you really want to go further than that you could describe it as a chemical reaction between different neurons in the brain

The first half of this tune sounds very Boards of Canada-ish. It even has one of those classic BoC song titles. Perhaps (I'm speculating) they'll pursue a more subdued, trancey version of their signature child-like sound in their next record, a sort of cool down after the dancey MPP.

@andgon7 no it's in 7/8; AC likes to put bass drum hits in strange places and I think that's where you are getting tripped up.

Just because Animal Collective's music is so powerful and entrancing as to put one into a hypnotic, drug-like state, does not mean that they are music for druggies. This music does go well with drugs, because it enhances the psychedelic experience, but anytime I feel like going into a trance, whether high or not, I like to put them on.

Exactly! lol and yes you COULD go that far and just look at the most basic view of it, the bio-chemistry, and what parts of the brain light up due to proximity to other parts and pre-established connections. I think about that too, right on.

@owlertheprowler I think everyone has the capacity for creativity. People (like musicians) who tend to be more creative also tend to use more drugs. That doesn't mean that drugs make you a more creative person necessarily, but it could mean that some people find certain drugs help them be more creative. I am thankful for the drugs who have helped some of my favorite musicians make music. Not all good music was inspired by drugs, but a lot of good music was.

Well, like what...a whole Jerry solo or what? I think they did a brilliant job of nip-and-tucking that sample. And good for them for using a GD song, and Unbroken Chain, at that. Be happy!

@platypae333 I'm glad that your not against pot even though you don't do it. We need more people like you. Thank you for being open minded. I'm the same way, I am more "against" some drugs and not others. Although being against certain drugs doesn't mean I think we should lock everyone up who chooses to use them. I think that money is better spent on education and rehabilitation.

@evantstowers Very well put, thats the way it is with pretty much every band I like. Sober or high the music is still great.

@platypae333 Our high drinking age causes a lot of binge drinking for those under 21. It also causes a lot of young people to seek out pot instead of alcohol because pot is consistently easier to obtain for those in high school. The fact that the prohibitionists are accomplishing the exact OPPOSITE of their stated goal (keep pot out of the hands of children) is dumbfounding.

this sounds better than Studio REcord version imo most of their live stuff the lead singer sings with more energy live on records the lead singer sounds like he's bored and no energy Live > Studio - most of the time for this group

Yea but that's impossible now because of information technology and catering to niche groups. The Beatles took over the world back then because of the control that the labels had over the market at the time (not to say they weren't terrific). AC have expanded the boundaries of music in a way comparable to the beatles, with every album being a fresh and unique escape from the norm.
