I always find other peoples homes fascinating, so today I thought I would share with you our Shanghai townhome. We lucked out in getting this fully furnished, two story apartment with a terrace. Also, I think it's a bit different than most China apartment tours because we are a family and not a single person. Hope you enjoy it!
xoxo,
Melissa
ps. I have no clue what is on my shirt sleeve the entire video. oh well.

my primary guess about kitchen's absence of heat and AC is, that the Chinese are meant to cook all the time in the kitchen. Which is meaning that door to the balcony will be almost all the time opened. There is no much need in heat or cool air, unless someone has their own preferences. When you cook, - you will naturally sweat and gonna take shower afterwards. You also have door to the kitchen,- so you can split kitchen's air from rest of apartment and you will not have that mess which we have here in US all the time (living room + kitchen together). That's why I am cooking in Houston in the most of the cases outdoor. It takes foerever to take all those smells away, including clothes, walls and etc. I believe it is very smart in China to keep those spaces separate. We also do have same logic in Ukraine/Russia and every other Easter Europe country. There is no much need in a kitchen's exhaust as well, - cause you still need to open window to get air circulated. My dream was always to have my kitchen separate, where I can cook whatever I want, including baking, grilling, wok. But I cannot do it in my US house, - only outdoor. If you gonna stay there long time, - talk to the condo owner and ask them if they can get for your another split AC so you will feel yourself more comfortable in the kitchen. I believe during summer temperatures can get very high, - so you definitely need it. But maybe simply opened door to the main area will do it's trick. Since people in China cook a lot at home and they have 3 meals a day and lots of people are living in the same place, - it would take them 1h+ to vent everytime bad smells out to the street. So technically balcony door will be close only for the night period.

For drying the laundry, did you check taobao to see this kind of blowing dryer that looks like a temporary wardrobe? It's cheap and it's actually quite practical imo. You can install it anywhere you want as long as there's a spot to plug in. That's how I survive when last time I went back to China in the winter time.

It's a really nice tour and nice apartment, but I am little surprised why nobody was curious for the price (from comments). Could you share the cost of this rental unit? I'm sure it's not a typical living condition for people there, even for foreigners. Thanks.
@melissa_renee
@melissa_renee Год назад
So this apartment is not typical in price. It’s very inexpensive and probably because they don’t fix anything. 🫣 We pay about 9.000¥ a month. Most apartments this size in our area are about 12-16.000 ¥ a month or higher. It all depends on size, location, condition. That’s why I didn’t give a price.

What's the rent like for a place like this?
@melissa_renee
@melissa_renee Год назад
So I didn’t put a cost because we got a great deal on ours. Also rent is so dependent on location. I’d expect to pay around $1,200- $1,500 (Around 10,000 RMB) a month in the burbs. Also depends on the quality and newness of the build. Soooo many factors. Prices are increasing a lot lately too. So if you’re moving here please don’t quote me on those prices. 😊👍
