I'm back with another ferry adventure, but this one was on a different level. DFDS was a real eye-opener - join me onboard for an incredibly cheap voyage from Oslo in Norway to Copenhagen in Denmark. This must be the only bargain in either country at £60 including my own ensuite cabin!
Filmed overnight from 6th - 7th September 2022.

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

I spent a week in Copenhagen this past summer and I found it to be the quietest major city in Europe I've ever been to. Outside of the main attraction areas, people were very quiet and some neighborhoods didn't even have cars moving through them but for a few every ten minutes. The parks are very tranquil and the general vibe was low key. Can't believe you took the ferry there and just split. Maybe that's your thing, I'm new to this channel. Definitely going to try a DFDS to Oslo. Subscribed.

Aww, brings back some childhood memories! Been on this lady a few times while she was called M/S Athena and sailed for Viking Line between Stockholm and Mariehamn. One of the wow factors in the early 90s was that half the car deck was sectioned-off and housed a kind of theme park with golf simulator, arcades and some other big moving hydraulic simulator. Love how innovative these ferry companies have always been. The whole "cruise ferry" thing got started due to the rivalry of Viking Line and Silja Line and really pushed the standard for how ferry travel is now done.

Scandinavian ferries are a thing of their own. Inexpensive but fully equipped entertainment ships. You should try the ferry lines between Stockholm to Åland/Finland/Estonia, but beware, they're more party than travel sometimes. All the cities are beautiful and Åland is a small treasure on its own. Btw the Helsingør castle is supposedly the castle Shakespeare had in mind for Hamlet, and Helsingør is a pretty, little town. Just across lies Helsingborg in Sweden, and just to let you know the ferry culture, Swedes from the region frequently goes "touring" or tura which means they buy a ticket and spend the evening going back and fort between the towns having dinner and drinks on board. We love our ferries.

One of the reasons for the low cost of the Scandinavian ferries is the very high taxes on liquor and cigarettes. The ferries do a very good business both in the on-board bars and in the duty-free shops. When my sister lived in Stockholm, she and her friends would take the ferry to Finland to have a weekend out as the drinks were cheap. When I was visiting Copenhagen in 1970, we (I was staying with a family friend) took the ferry (a very short ride) to Sweden. I was really surprised that, as soon as we arrived, we got right back on the ferry. I was disappointed not to get a chance to see Malmö, as the entire point was to buy a couple of cartons of cigarettes.

Great video! Here is a little history lesson for you about her. She was built in 1989/1990 for Viking Line as m/s Athena and she sailed on the Stockholm-Mariehamn route purely as a 24 hour short cruiser. She was sold in 1993 to Star Cruises together with her sister ship m/s Kalypso (now scrapped). DFDS bought Pearl Seaways in 2001 but her name then was Pearl of Scandinavia. I think she was the biggest ferry in the world for a couple of months when she was delivered in 1989/1990.

@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 That's a shame, it was a great service, but was run down to be more commercial and less ferry cruise in the final years. But when it was running properly, it was a superb service, and made trips to Denmark an absolute pleasure. Taking one's own car meant it was no problem to drive anywhere, and with all the luggage needed. Likewise, when coming back, one could fill the car with Danish food and provisions. We usually drove straight to København, stayed there for half the time, visited Tivoli every night, then spent the rest of the holiday touring the rest of Denmark, including all the places where we once used to live. Very happy times.

As a Dane and a Shareholder in the Danish Shipowner/Ferry Company, DFDS (also sailing ferries from NL to England and as a pure freight/truck ferry from Esbjerg to Hull) I thank you for making this film! I have done this trip many times, from in an inside cabin for 4 and in an outside, luxury cabin for two, with a large window and view for sailing through the Oslo Fiord in the morning. A small rocky island is passed with hardly room for a single summerhouse and formerly also the constant oil spill from the, by then brand new German Warship Blücher, which was sunk during the invasion the 9th of april 1940! With a fresh crew they wasn't able to stop the water coming in from a hit with a Norwegian torpedo from an old Fort to the side of the fiord! It was pumped dry from fuel oil some years ago, still being considered a war grave, because many men were lost.

There are multiple places you can stay in Oslo and the Oslo area without paying a fortune for it. And there are plenty of places you can visit for free or very being very cheap. And there are also some experiences that can be very fun and will not cost that much to do. So I think this is a great idea to show people that they can visit and experience Oslo without paying an arm and a leg for it. It is rather frustrating as a Norwegian to see how people claim how extremely expensive it is everywhere in Norway and close to impossible for most to live in or visit. If people would do some better research and avoid running into the typical tourist traps, they would see that it doesn't have to be as expensive as they think it will be at all.

Correct, Steve, the Danes first finished the Great Belt Bridge in 1998, followed by the Øresund Bridge & tunnel in 2000, so you can travel without ferries from Germany to Sweden. They have embarked on an even bigger project, the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel between Rødby and Puttgarden in Germany, which should be finished by the end of the decade and spell the end of the ferry between these places (the train already no longer takes the ferry, but you can still take a train and replacement buses to the ferry at either side, while they also upgrade the railway lines), and likely some other ferries between Germany and Sweden as well...

Watched this vlog when first aired, and promised myself the trip. Well I did it last week (Sep 2023) and it was a bit of journey to Oslo from Orkney, and back from Copenhagen, but boy was it worth it ! The ferry trip was amazing. I enjoyed it all - the sky bar, the restaurants, the other bars, the views, the calm crossing, the cabin. I had a really comfy sleep. I was prepared for the 1am stop in Fredrikshavn , having watched your trip, so I opened my eyes for a few minutes, then back to sleep. Thank you Steve for making me aware of this excellent trip.

We did the reverse run from Copenhagen to Oslo and had a wonderful time back in April 2019. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. I’d take that trip again (even in those tiny, for 2 people, rooms).

Cracking video, we're planning Scandinavia for 3/4 weeks in the motorhome next year, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Eldest son spent a gap year three years ago playing Volleyball in Oslo, this was between his degree and masters, he loved it there. We may well take that ferry for the experience. Longest ferry we've ever done is Plymouth to Santander about 25 years ago. Thanks for the upload.

As the ferries from Oslo are a big cash cow, you can quite often get a return trip for a very low sum and even sometimes for free. Especially with the DFDS one to Copenhagen. The Oslo-Kiel ferry is a tad bit more expensive, but also offer a massive and cruise line style ship. Very popular mini vacation boats, and also for job conferences and so on.
