I also live in Houston (Nasa Space Center area) and recently flew back to the motherland, El Salvador. My flight got delayed back when I was there and my family there was too far away from the airport same for a hotel so I ended up sleeping and tbh it was fun experience and it's super nostalgic to me.
Do they still do a secobd or third baggage check before you board? We were there in February 2023 and they did the main tsa check after the immigration exit stamp, then another tsa xray machine to enter the new terminal and then "randomly" they checked all my families bags again at the gate.

Just flew back from SAL to LAX (11/29/2023). Yes, they did a second baggage check which I think is rather odd.
Hey man, I live in Houston too and I’m going to El Salvador in April. Just booked my flight, rental car, and hotel. how early did y’all’s flight leave? I also just realized the airport is about an hour from the actual city. How was driving around from the airport to the city?
Our flight left around 8am if I remember correctly. Renting a car had some hickups but it was probably the best option. They charge $1000 deposit to a credit card to rent. Also renting from the airport is basically your only option even though you will see multiple rental companies all around the city on google maps.
The drive is like 40min. It goes buy quick because it's a very hilly drive. You have a lot of views to keep you entertained. The closer you get to the city worser the drivers get. The cars out there are built much smaller than American cars. The side mirrors don't show you as much as you're used to. Takes a few minutes getting used to it.
No we just left it on the table. They dont even have an entrance to come in. All the doors are locked. We just waited for someone to come out and we walked in.
