~required listening for necessary clarity~
Why should you listen to me? Answer: hareesh.org/about
Dec 30, 2023 - Satsang notes (NOT complete, and NOT a replacement for watching the video)
The number one quality that you need is vigilance.
“keep vigilantly paying attention to the difference between being with direct experience and suddenly getting lost in the mind world.”
Vikalpa-saṃskāra is about refining understanding, not installing new beliefs.
From the standpoint of the spiritual path, if you are trying to figure something out you are just spinning your wheels in the mind world. Instead, look deeper into your direct experience, where revelation is possible, but there is nothing to figure out.
Re: spiritual experiences, the mind is concerned with “what does it mean?” The answer is always “nothing”. Experiences (per se) are irrelevant to the process of awakening.
Truth cannot be found by referencing thoughts; when something arises do not try to conceptualize it but rather feel into it.
The mind compulsively looks to thoughts to find truths. What if you saw the intrinsic value of those movements in the heart and didn’t need them justified by thoughts?
Thoughts are tools, not truths, they can be useful but not true.
Giving yourself permission not to know makes space for intuition.
The mind makes emotions into a problem you need to understand. Be vigilant in recognizing this - discern between emotion and the thoughts it generates.
Refining your understanding sows the seeds of awakening - the practice is not wasted. understanding the View but not directly experiencing it can make the First Step possible.
practice without pure motive is never wasted, it brings you to pure motive. Hareesh started all over again with beginner's mind, after 15 years of studying and practices. There was a fervent desire to open to transmission.
Relationship between relative truths and absolute truths? “It is best to treat them as foreign to each other.” Why?... It causes confusion if you think relative truth has a bit of absolute truth.
Example: There are relative truths that contribute to harmonious relationships but “there is nothing written in the stars that harmonious relationships are inherently better.”
But cultivated awareness on relative truths can contribute to awareness on absolute truth.
The mind will make this awakening process seem inadvisable. The mind does not want to be deposed from the throne of selfhood.
Beginner’s mind - look where the instructions are pointing rather than comparing it or connecting it to what you previously learned.
"How should one choose the method(s) to cultivate vikalpa-samskara?"
-- a great starting place is the Contemplation chapter in Adyashanti's "The Way of Liberation" (and the sutras that follow) PLUS reading my blog posts on Tantrasāra chapter 4 and applying Adya's contemplation method to select sentences from that translation.

Today outdoors in London, as the wind stormed and the rain lashed, I have been with your words, 'the capacity to experience bliss in any context regardless of conditions.' The wind bellowed through the leafless trees as I walked in the timid light and horizontal rain. There was a sense of edginess, contraction and pulling in alongside an awareness not to take sides and to be with both the disorientation and the wildness of it all. Not exactly bliss, more a contentment being with the dance as it was experienced.

Beautiful. Christopher - Is then the key to awakening finding the silence/stillness after the use of the preparatory tools of imagination and discernment? Or is it finding the connection of all things in the mundane of the ordinary? Or neither? Or both? The longer I practice, and the more I learn, the more I yearn to let all the tools go. The reading, mantra, visualization, ritual, pranayam, asana all feels useful, but a bit in the way. I often feel that I know too much, and at the same time absolutely nothing at all. Also, your interaction with Adyashanti really spoke to my heart. Thank you. 🖤

Hi Hareesh! I was wondering, would you ever consider doing a video on the word OM? It's something that I think is so ubiquitous yet most people don't really understand what it means. I'm including myself in that group. I mean, I remember that it's considered the seed syllable of all of creation and is representative of the totality of existence, but I feel like that is just the tip of the iceberg. Just a thought. Awesome video as usual!

Hi Chris! Great talk!!! As are so many of yours. I am so glad I found you and your teachings, after being aware of Swami Lakshmanjoo in my teens; and ending up working with Dzognchen and Mahamudra to some extent over many years. Can I clarify something please re barriers to awakening? I have heard you say in other talks the sense of separate self is but a thought. I know, a simplification. You have also spoken of when the kundalini comes down from above and up from below (like with Gtummo) and meets in the heart, we become awake and alive, truly awake to the sleepwalking through life we previously experienced. So my question is, is one of the barriers to recognising what is, our ground essence of singular awakeness, more than just a thought or belief(s), conscious and unconscious, but actually a matter of our energy body not being active? That is, Kundalini not being awake/ active, as described above? Many thanks for all the time and effort you put into these free teachings! Please feel free to direct me to videos and teachings, as you see fit, if so inclined. Many thanks! 😇🙏📿

That's a good question. I would say the first phase of awakening, which is crucially important, does not depend at all on the awakening of K. The second major phase does, but awakening of K happens quite naturally as a part of it, it's not needed to have a master who awakens it as many people think. See my video on the phases of awakening here.

"Gilded Witness" Why when we see an animal, Beaten, succumb to the brutal culling of Nature's reaver ways Do we pity them? Bane, and tooth this wild beast. She's majestic, bloodied and ensconced in death She bows her head demurely And with a heavy sinking, slides to the earth Sullen in the gully of rotten erda She lays down to die. Knowing. With a calm that cools the blood Waiting for the mercy of release Do we shame her not to struggle? To wonder what if I carried on, despite the odds? To preserve. Or is it rather In that regal bastion of fated cleft Nestling into a dream Did we witness the Grace of life understanding death?

Just 13 minutes in this wonderful video* (* edit: now finished) … I have a question for you, Chris: upon ego (identity) falling away, having been, seen and so known the Self as living light in renewal continual in singularity, how may this recognition be embodied in our waking state, breath by breath, in an unending continuum? Edit: Or as is said in the later part of the video - inhabiting or abiding in your true self’.

“How else would it work?” First of all if your guru or instructor can not give you a clear understanding of the actual mechanics then he is just as lost and bewildered as anyone else. So after refining or approximating our understanding of the Absolute with all the yogic practices, there is nothing more that can be done? All we can do is use our imagination? Those statements alone would place Yoga and the whole Vedic philosophy as a farce, an absurdity. I did get upset with those statements. The Vedic teachings are whole and completely in themselves with regards to stillness of the mind and ending desire. This theme is repeated over again by the Buddha. And just as the Buddha predicted that the purity of his teachings would only last so long. Those teaching has deteriorated into mysticism, rituals and even to the point of the denial of a Soul. In like manner the Vedas have deteriorated long, long ago into nothing related to its original teachings. It only deteriorated with time, not becoming more refined with the many schools of thought which has lead to confusion, mysticism and a total collapse from reality. I am here to defend the Vedas and say mysticism has nothing to do with the Vedas. Central to the Vedas is a humbling beginning. Our natural minds are attracted toward pleasure. There is absolutely no mysticism in that basic fact! All of the cosmology(including the path to the Absolute) around the Vedas is derived from that basic fact. I am not a scholar. I am only a layperson but I do know what I’m talking about. I can explain everything in plain English including the mechanism(yes a direct means) and explain exactly what we are talking about when referring to enlightenment or awakening. If you request for more information, I promise to respond and explain everything here.
@richardhernandez6937
@richardhernandez6937 7 месяцев назад
Mr. Wallis, the goal of Yoga is union with the Absolute, not the refinement or approximation to the Absolute. But there are several major insurmountable obstacles making such a task seemingly impossible. The first, the gulf between Man and God is too great, no bridge(path) is possible. The second argument, if our experiences are subjective, no objective “Absolute Truth” can be found because each one of us will have a different subjective experience. A third argument is that it is impossible to think your way out of a thinking box. Even though you may not be thinking of a thought, the brain is in fact still actively processing subconsciously. The genius of the Vedas is that they describe a way(a path) nullifying all those obstacles. I’m not talking about an abstract convoluted mental construct but an actual realization. The Vedas are in fact talking about the workings of the human brain, not mysticism. By transcending into the subconscious, reaching the source of thought is possible(Atman). Throw mysticism, rituals and multiple Gods out the window. There is so much I wanted to convey but at least I got across that point. All is good, have a good day, Sir. .

@richardhernandez6937

Mr. Wallis, it is all nonsense what you are talking about. There is absolutely no mysticism in core Vedic teachings and certainly no imagination involved in its teachings. When Vedic knowledge is lost to Man then anything and everything becomes a free for all. Teachers and gurus themselves become delusional with there own mysticism.

@richardhernandez6937 7 месяцев назад
@@christopherwallis751Mr. Wallis I am in no way a scholar but I do know what I’m talking about. The Vedas that you have study are corrupted. You have become a scholar of the corrupt mysticism. The path has nothing to do with performing rituals/ceremonies, asceticism, penance, multiple Gods, mindfulness, dietary restrictions, caste system, kundalini or any of the other many cognitive intellectual pursuits.
