This Japan guide reviews what to do in Tokyo when you first arrive at Narita Airport or Haneda Haneda Airport. First time travelers are confused what to do in Tokyo, where to go, how to get from Narita Airport to Tokyo, how to get from Haneda Airport to Tokyo as well as what to eat in Japan. I cover all these questions and much more. These are Japan Travel Guide tips I wish someone told me when I first arrived in Japan or even wish I knew before I came to Japan. This video is perfect for first time travelers who don't know the difference between Narita Airport or Haneda Airport. Also, I share with you how to Get a SIM a card and what useful apps you can download before arriving at the Tokyo Airport in Japan. I even provide some tips on Showers and Tokyo Capsule Hotels at both Tokyo airports.
__ Must Know things when First Arriving in Tokyo Japan __
0:00 - Intro
0:51 - 1 Difference Between Narita & Haneda Airport
Travelers flying into Tokyo for the first time, have an option to fly into Narita or Haneda Airport.
Narita is the larger of the 2 airports and is generally known to have more international flights while Haneda has more domestic flights. Both have lots of dining and shopping areas, but since Haneda is newly ren, I have to give Haneda the overall edge when it comes to attractions.
The biggest differentiator between both airports is the distance to Tokyo. Narita is about 1 hr away by express train, while Haneda is about 15-30 min train ride away. So it’s a little cheaper transportation-wise from Haneda.

Just a warning about Mobal: with them you pay for a full month every month regardless of when you leave Japan, so for example if you leave on the 10th of a month you will still be billed for the amount until the 30th of the month. So effectively they scam you out of some money during the month you leave.

I’ve lived off of Google maps the last 4 times I’ve been to Japan. One recommendation is to screenshot the directions if using public transit. Same with any other city’s transit, if you refresh the directions en route, you may lose your original choice. Second, there are often so many options in Tokyo (ie JR, Toei, etc) that a route you found may not exist minutes later because of Google’s algorithm to try to find the fastest routing, regardless of which transit line it’s on. So screenshot if you don’t want to lose a search result.

Google Maps is OK, but has serious drawbacks in trying to get you around buildings as you are being directed to walk through solid walls without being told that you should be up or down several flights of stairs.

Wow! Literally just touched down in Tokyo for the first time ever a few hours ago and you release this. Railway systems were for sure overwhelming but it didn’t take too long to get the hang of it. Staff is very helpful as well as all the signs. Perfect timing. I was so overwhelmed by the pace. Where to stand. How it’s impolite to be loud in public places. Still learning every minute. We just had our first bowl of authentic Japanese a ramen. Definitely emotional experience.

Zareh Kantzabedian have fun and make the most of your trip. Loved my trip so much this past October I went again towards the end of January and just got back last week. Hi! Is the information in the video (train pass card etc.) still correct? Since it has been 4 years. Thanks!
@eric1172
@eric1172 4 месяца назад
@@ArchangelAurora Hi! I actually just came back from Japan a week ago. Everything is still up-to-date and his tips are great. I would add/expand on the following tho: 1) If you can arrive at Haneda do so because it is cheaper to get to Tokyo (specifically Shinjuku/Shibuya which is probably where you'd stay as a young tourist) 2) SIM cards are great. However, if you have a phone that's "locked" by your cellular provider then you only have two real options: use their international plan which depending on the company (cough cough AT&T) can be very expensive or rent a mobile wifi. Mobile WiFi is great if you're traveling with several friends/family as you can share the data (although the battery of the mobile wifi might drain much faster) 3) He didn't mention this but the JR Pass is dead. The company increased the prices by almost 70%, which renders the pass almost useless unless you're planning on having a lot of day trips that require the Shinkansen (bullet train). Just remember if you get the pass, that the JRPass doesn't cover the metro or city buses! 4) I have an iPhone and I use BOTH google maps and apple maps, they kinda complement each other, but you'd probably be fine with only google maps. 5) I haven't stayed in a capsule hotel since the second time I traveled to Japan because I now travel with my GF. Generally speaking, if you are traveling with someone else I would recommend booking an AirBnB in an area near Shinjuku/Shibuya (when staying in Tokyo, of course). Most (90%) of the AirBnBs that we've booked are incredible, even when they are not hosted by a "Super Host". That's just Japan's work ethic at its best, everything is clean. 6) Don't get a taxi from the airport to your hotel/Airbnb!! Just don't. What I'd recommend if it is your first time traveling to Japan is, get in a train (like the Narita express or local rapid trains) to the station closest to where you're staying at and from there you can take a taxi just because if you have the address in Japanese it can be easier for the driver to actually find your hotel/airbnb (specially true for Airbnb) 7) Japan had a shortage of materials to make the IC cards, so they are not giving the "old IC cards" anymore; rather you, the tourist, can get a "temporary IC card" which expires in some amount of time (I can't remember how long, but it wasn't more than a month or so) the airports have signs as to where you can get them. BUT I recommend, if you have Apple Pay, to just add a mobile Suica card to your apple wallet and just add money to that digital card. It works great and it is identical to having the physical card (you don't need a deposit either). Either option is recommended. I hope that information helps!

As someone who lived in Japan a few years, Paolo is right on the money with his info. Now one thing about the sim cards, make sure your phone can take sim cards outside of your country. Here in the US, some providers lock their phones only to the US but most of them can unlock it for you if you call them before you leave. Sometimes it takes 24-72 hours to get the unlock information, sometimes you have to go to one of their corporate stores to do it. So check with your provider. Also check if your phone can operate on international frequencies, most 3G and 4G ones can.

She's more interested in Japanese food than the Japanese scenes. So Tokyo was a bit too modern for her. Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe would have been more of a fit for her. I love going into Narita a little more than Haneda. Simply because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE taking the NEX and/or Skyliner. The train ride on either train is so damn relaxing for me. After a usually long, grueling, uncomfortable, flight, it feels good to have some leg room and the white noise on either train just feels so amazing. I also love all the lush greenery that you see before you get into Tokyo, it is so wonderful. Haneda is quite awesome too however but I just prefer Narita personally. Though Haneda is much closer, like you mentioned.

Great video and info. I will add that the JR Rail Pass does actually work on any local metro train in Tokyo as long as it's run by JR. You just have to flash your JR pass to the attendant office at the gate when you walk in/out (as opposed to tapping in and out with your Suica/Passmo card). It even works on the Narita Express (NEX) train and covers your tickets going to and from Narita to Tokyo. If you're going to Hokkaido, it also works in getting passage on the JR trains to Hakodate from Aomori. Lots of benefits with the JR pass for visitors!

Pretty good information on this video! Only thing I want to comment on it the Modal Sims, even though it advertise that the sim is unlimited data, that is not exactly true. There is a 3GB limit per day, and if you exceed that limit, they can reduce your speed dramatically for up to 48 hours! I understand if they cap and maybe restart the next day, but 48 hours is a long time to be without service when trying to navigate around.

Renting a Pocket wifi is way better than getting a data sim especially if you're travelling with family and friends. Data Sim is only recommended for solo travelers.

@@declansomerspersonalmail4038 not sure what country you are in. I'm in the states and most of our contract phones, and I'd say a large portion of the no contract phones, are locked. Can you make video for kansai airport? And information about transportation to osaka/kyoto too?
@SephiMasamune
@SephiMasamune 5 лет назад
Rossa Amalia he lives in Tokyo so i don't expect him to cover other areas, but it's pretty much the same thing. Express bus from Kansai to Osaka (didn't see any train rails there which makes sense because it's an artificial island), which will take about 30-45 minutes depending where in the city you have to be. From Osaka to Kyoto, just hop on the trains at Mamba or Shin-Osaka and you will be at Kyoto central station in 30 minutes. Japan's public transport is so well oiled it really deserves the reputation it has, no need to worry.
@nabilaharoun5919
@nabilaharoun5919 5 лет назад
If you're going from Kyoto/Osaka to Kansai Airport, your fastest option is to take the JR Haruka that drops you right at the airport. The Haruka leaves every 30min from Kyoto Station or Shin-Osaka and Tennoji Station if you're staying in Osaka.

You missed converting JR pass to a valid dated pass. Can use the JR pass on JR line trains instead of SUICA
@magical_catgirl
@magical_catgirl 5 лет назад
JR passes are not worth it in most cases. They are too limiting in the big cities (ie, they can only be used on around 40% of the trains in Tokyo) and the price isn't worth it unless you are making at least 3 Tokyo-Osaka distance trips during the pass period.

If you don't want to fork out the 700-1000 yen per day for a SIM card, google maps actually functions as a real map with directional awareness for the most part (or at least did on my samsung galaxy s5). You can't search for anything, but if you know where you're going or just need a general sense, you can save money and rest assured that you can use your google maps on your phone without service. Then, if you want to search, set directions, or refresh your map (because it will remember a large area, but not every detail of everything unless you pre-load it) you can connect to wifi and keep on moving in Tokyo! (Most other areas/rural areas will not have this luxury).

That sounds like pocket wifi prices. When I was there, I paid about 2500 yen every 1-1.5 weeks for 2GB of data

Also, if you guys are coming soon, you can download the Google Maps map (lol) onto your phone in a bunch of areas so when you use Google Maps, it doesn't actually use any data. Used this for my Hawaii trip and plan to do the same for Tokyo. The downloads last 30 days before they are auto deleted!
