Jeez I wish I'd watched your video 8 months ago, I wore adventure boots for Enduro, nothing too gnarly still broke my Tib & Fib. Great advice thanks..UK.
FINALLY after so many reviews. THE LATERAL test. Yes exactly, got a pair of tcx, sprained ankle low speed low side, could have been worse, but now looking for better. And doesn't need to be off road to warrent good protection. THUMBS UP.
I know you said that you walked a mile in the -12s. I share a situation that happened to a good friend. Great athletic rider who's CDI went out in the middle of Lockhart Basin, he was wearing quality MX style boots with the limited pivot like most good ones use. After a few miles (he had to walk 16mi) his feet were so bad the boots had to come off or he wasn't going to make it to water/cell signal, close to 100F out. He ended up with the inserts duct-taped to his foot walking out carefully, took hour and hours. He won't ride solo w/o carrying some type of shoe now. Only saying this because you mentioned them for DS and adv travel. That can be a serious issue that any person riding alone should consider, depending on the distance, you aren't walking out in MX boots when there's miles and miles till a cell signal despite what you think walking around in them., have a backup like cheap tennis shoes min. I ride DS and Adv wearing Gaerne No Touch waterproof trials boots, doesn't have the ankle protection the MX boots do but I've gone down in them and been using them 5 years, they're one of the longest lasting and most comfortable boots I've owned. You can walk out in a leather boot, just don't stick it between the ground and your hard bags when you fall. For serious dirt I wear SG-10s for the reasons ADD mentioned. IMO there's a point where the riders knowledge and skill level factor into the level of protection that's appropriate. Lots of riders doing serious miles on adv boots with no issues. Where they get a bad rap is the less experienced riders wearing them in situations they shouldn't; falling over on their leg with hard bags, sticking their foot out when they shouldn't etc. Of course anything can happen, you can break your neck in a relatively minor get off depending on how/what you hit. And yes the ankle injuries can and do happen with better, more qualified Adv and DS riders but are fairly rare. Considering the target audience though Desert Dog's words are wise advice.
That is quite an ordeal. I've heard of guy micro-enduro camping using there inserts for camp shoes. I like the trials boots. Like you said there is some skill required. My intent here is to hopefully steer away some of the newcomers from the sites that say you can wear work boots on double black diamond single track. I have been wearing the SG's when riding off road trails with the 1090. Longer trips with pavement I use the cheapo MX boots which I am looking for a good option to replace. Thanks for the thoughtful comment.
@@azdesertdog I totally get your point in that video and I get it 100 percent. I felt that walking a distance in MX boots should be mentioned. Not something many riders think about. It's an easy fix, carry something with you if you're venturing way out alone. Nice video.
Great review! If you break your ankle, and I did, I could have bought ten pairs of top quality boots for that expense. So, for the last 20 years I have bought only the best boots, no more foot damage!
Nice review that shows a lot of safety differences. I am very guilty of going with basic boots. My boots have protected me against a lot of hits, but they definitely would fail if the structure was tested (like if my foot got twisted under the bike). My next pair will definitely be a higher end boot. It just makes sense in the long run.
I learned this the hard way. Even the top of the line SIDI adventure boot wasn't enough to protect my foot when my bike fell on it. 3 months off work and plates and screws to reconstruct my foot as a prize.
Thanks for the information. I use the fox comp 8 boots, somewhere in between the 2 you mentioned, and have been happy. Never liked them for hiking however.
That's pretty interesting to see the difference between the boots. I like the idea of the ankle support and my first thoughts were that's a great idea for off-road riding
I agree with everything you mentioned about boots. I have a short, wide with high instep foot and boots are hard for me to find. I got into the Forma Adv. boot when I first started riding the dirt again and love them for all the reasons you stated. Also wanted to mention one other thing: as long as it is your money and your knowledge of the products you purchase and review I am in to your videos forever. I do not watch nor listen to all these you tubers who are selling free products from manufactures with jaded opinions .
My intent is to buffer from the folks you mentioned. Also the inexperienced that say you can trail ride with work boots. Lots of bad info out there. Modern tech in the new gear is amazing.
Lol this video is why I tell myself I want the alpinestar tech 7 but I just got my kx450f and I don’t ride it daily and don’t know how often I’ll get to ride. So that makes me want to get the tech 3. Locally shop only sells alpinestar and I prefer to shop local since I’m a local business owner myself.
azdesertdog I have SG10’s & SIDI Crossfires several years old, between the two I prefer the SG’s. I also have some AeroStich Combat lights that are made by SIDI for everyday riding the combat lights are my go to. Never wear them if any off road is in the mix!
yep, Im a 13 wide and my son is a 15EE... so yea, IF you can find anything at all.......Im fortunate in that cost isnt an issue in my gear and I can get some boots, but a lot of top or good quality isn't made in my size, I'm in good shape , big and tall-even KLIM doesn't make jackets in my size ( I've checked personally) let alone most foot wear .
Great review and I also think the same. I'll buy mx boots instead of adventure boots because they offer much more protection and protection is also as important on the road as off the road. But, I'd like to ask your idea between Alpinestars Tech 10 vs. Gaerne SG 12. You're using Gaerne. It has a better toe protection but some say Alpinestars provides more general protection. I know they're two of the best boots out there being still used by professionals but what is your opinion?.
I think either are a good option. I went with Gaerne because they are rebuildable and the biggest comment about the boots across all reviews was comfort. Thanks for watching!
I have had ONE pair of motorcycle street boots that I could walk in comfortably. There is definitely a compromise of safety vs comfort. I have yet to buy a specific off road boot because I go so slow off road. 😬
Okay I gathered from the comments that the larger pair are Gaerne boots . Sorry if I butchered their name . What model are they and are they waterproof ? I have a pair of Falco Avantuer boots and they incorporate a fair amount of protection , a little more give in the ankle in a walking motion . They have a nice metal internal hinge that is great for crush protection at the ankle joint . Glad I just was able to get the previous version with a resoleable sole and not the newer one with a vulcanized sole .
@@azdesertdog Okay thanks , I will check it out . I would like a good second pair of quality boots that have a step up in protection but for top dollar I want waterproofness .
I know this is an older vid but what would be a good all around ATV boot. I just mainly trail ride, but go to the dunes and offroad parks and ride in my yard. Do some fairly decent sized jumps. Not racing but want something with good flex and more protection. I’ve been looking at boots but they dont have strictly ATV boots so would enduro boots be a good choice? Problem i have with MX boots is they are so uncomfortable and bulky to me. I cant even fit the boot under the shifter, and no flex in the boot to shift up. I want a mobile boot with good flex but enough ankle protection to take a decent hit.
Thanks for watching. I assume you ride a sport quad. Quads in general are a little easier on the legs in most ways. I think you could get away with a less of a premium boot. I would suggest the Oneal Element. I actually talk about it in this video. I have used them on quads before. After some break in they are pretty comfortable.
FOX comp 5 boots........ NEVER AGAIN 3 Pairs. SUCKED. Went to the Gaerne Love them! never found a weakness. I wanted to get to some Knee braces...... Not needed anymore.
So straight up motocross boots for dual sports and possibly street biased? I'm looking at a dr650 for a first bike that will get hwy miles as well as off road. The support makes total sense, but do you lose out on gear shifting feel? Great vid mate.
Hi Adrian. For mostly street based commuting a ADV boot might work for most situations. If you are dual sporting on weekends on gravel roads and two track I would suggest a pair of ONeals like you see in this video. If you can afford it I would get both. Good luck. Be safe.
