My ZJ is a 96 Laredo. It has the 5.2 v8 I swapped out the 249 transfer case with a p231 transfer case with a slip yoke eliminator kit and a Novak conversion cable shift for the transfer case to replace the crappy stock shifter linkage. It has a Dana 30 with 4.56 gears and a ARB air locker In the front. The rear is a disc brake Dana 44A they were strong enough for corvettes so I figured it would work in my jeep with 4.56 gears and an ARB air locker. The suspension is a Rubicon express 4.5 lift short arm kit. Steering is covered by a one ton high steer kit. Steering box brace modified heavy duty track bar and stabilizer. It Rides on BFG all terrain 33 x 15 Ko2 (snow rated) Off road bumpers with a 10,000 lb. winch. It has ARB onboard air comp for lockers and tires and tools. I know there are much better jeeps than mine but it is really comfortable has air it runs great and is great on the highway not noisy and is great off-road. When off-roading with a buddy he jumped out of a f350 into my ZJ and the first thing he said was boy it rode smooth. So this is why I love my ZJ.

Another interesting fact about the ZJ is that it was designed and specified by AMC back in 1983 - 10 years before it was actually marketed. They were remarkable for their time when they hit the sales floor and the place went nuts for them. They were the first vehicle completely designed by CAD, which revolutionised the car industry and all other industry as well. That's why when you find a nice one, you will note the very fine body panel and interior alignment and solidity throughout. Everything fits perfectly. The doors shut with the effort required on a Mercedes. No slamming. Although by now, the drivers door might have a worn hinge set. Low road noise, no wind buffeting at the windows or door joins, no squeaks when you try to push the dash panels like on the smaller Cherokee, which had an interior that reminded me of recycled milk jugs and wiggled and sqeaked every time I leaned on it even a little. As time goes on, natural attrition has reduced the number of ZJ's and they are now rising in value because the survivors are likely the better ones. Mine is a one owner creampuff, and except for a 2" puck lift and 30x9.50 KO2's, I'm keeping it street sweet. It has already proved to capable of 80% of anything a $40,000 Jeep can do. The last 20%, I don't care about. I do miss my XJ Cherokee, but I LOVE my 95 ZJ.
@davidtrevino5211
@davidtrevino5211 Год назад
People keep trying to talk me out of putting in a 3.5 inch puck lift on my 98 ZJ with 95,000 original .miles on the 4.0 liter engine. What do you recommend?
@OutnBacker
@OutnBacker Год назад
@@davidtrevino5211 I don't recommend it for a couple reasons: 1) Your low mileage Jeep is becoming more and more rare as people basically destroy them to make toys. 2) I have learned and seen that pretty much anything over 2-2.5 inches can, and sometimes does, induce the Death Wobble, leading to other mods that you may not have planned on. This is nt limited to Cherokees or vehicles with unibody construction. 3) Even if you don't get the wobble, your other structural members may have to be changed out to accomodate the extra distance that such a lift requires. Longer drive shaft, control arms, etc. I stayed at 2" because I wanted to keep both my ZJ and XJ street sweet, with safe handling, and because with slighly over size tires I can do 70%-80% of anything the swingin' diks can do. In the end, it depends on how you value your equipment, your ability to finance and facilitate a new hobby, and whatyou expect to do with your Jeep. For me, it's not about wheelin', it is merely a conveyance to get me to more remote camping areas that pickups/campers/trailers can't reach.

@@OutnBacker Very insightful information. I gotta admit, I absolutely love the ride it has right now at stock height. My slightly lifted XJ rides 10 times rougher.. Thank you for the response..
@OutnBacker
@OutnBacker Год назад
@@davidtrevino5211 A simple puck lift of 2" will not change that ride, but will allow a slightly taller tire. The taller tires will get the dif off the ground a tad more. It makesa difference when on those rutted tracks off the forest roads.
@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305
Theyre underpowered though just like the 4.2. There is a reason the 4.2 were dropped and they never used em anymore in the SJ wagoneers. Theyre underpowered. And yes the amc 360 later years had terrible hp. But its torque is still much higher than a 4.0 or 4.2

Good video! I had a 2000 XJ with the low oil pressure you mentioned. I put a lunch box locker in the rear, got a 1-inch ARB lift and rock rails. We drove that thing on many off-road adventures on 29s when the kids were small. Now the kids are adults. I recently bought a 98 ZJ with the 5.2. I'm going with the Spartan locker and rock rails again. Looking forward to some more adventures.

Normally, the Laredo with the 4L had the Dana 30 front, 35 rear. Not the strongest combo, but fine for moderate off road work. If you are running on off road 2-rut tracks with deep spots, high center, some minor pits and small logs across the track, you're fine. Steep stuff, rolling boulders under the wheels with snap stops, and plenty of it, you'll want to upgrade. Same goes for the transmission. Just take things nice and easy. Keep your tire choices light weight and narrow to avoid excess backslap in the drive train and axles. As far as I know, the only manuals were made in 1993, and in very small numbers so they are RARE (about 1500). Back then these were marketed to soccer mom's who didn't want to shift, so all later GC were autos. Corrections requested.
@reigndown
@reigndown Год назад
They made the manual transmission from 1993 into the 1994 model year and was discontinued for 1995. I had a parts ZJ with a production and build date in 94 that was factory equipped with the AX-15/NP231 combo which I took out and put into my 95 ZJ. If it wasn't about to rust in half I would have tried to save it. A user by the name of PLMCRZY had access to the production numbers where he worked and you can find the build sheet on a 5-speed ZJ auction that sold on Cars and Bids. For 1994 there were 1755 total made for the USA market and 260 for the CAN market. Idk if that includes the ZG version of the ZJ sold in Europe. 271 of them were SE models, the rest were Laredo trims. The Red 94 I had for parts was Laredo trim. The total amount of 5-speed ZJs left in the world in working condition is super slim, so I hope to keep my factory converted 95 in as top condition as I can until I croak haha.

A forgotten gem with jeep... I own a 94 ZJ, I6 5 speed, Laredo. Special order from factory with all leather interior. Very few Zj i6 manuals made, this one is unique. 231 transfer case upgraded internals to Dakota HD chains and gearing. Engine replaced with rebuilt 96 XJ I6. 92 XJ D30 HP upfront with upgraded shafts, stock U-joints to keep that as failure point, swapped rear axle for '98 Explorer 8.8 with rear discs. (I carry spare shafts when 4x4ing). YJ e-brake conversion. 4.56s with aftermarket limited slip front and rear since I do a ton of snow I steered clear of lockers (just ride the e-brake to lock up the rear). Clayton's Long arm kit, front and rear with 5 inch lift and 35s (you would have to clearance the wheel wells), but going back to 33s as I'm not on the trails as often. Upgraded intake and exhaust. Port matched long runner header. 2000 XJ intake manifold and power steering pump. 180f thermostat. Taurus radiator fans. Steering box braced and cross braced. HD OTK steering. 4x6 sliders. Tom Woods drive shafts. Fuel pump upgraded. Steel gas tank skid with tow hitch tucked. Factory skids upgraded. Aftermarket bumpers and tire carrier. Vanco upgraded brakes and calipers with steel lines. Neon fuel injectors, custom ported 62mm TB, upgraded pressure regulator and gapped plugs. I run ZDDP oil additive with these engines on T6 oil and VW turbo diesel oil filters (higher pressure BP valve). 12k winch. One of a kind and I'll probably never sell it. Seldom driven but starts every time. Biggest issue is power window door wiring starting to deteriorate needs a new wiring harness at the door hinges and headliner needed regluing. Besides that, very few issues. Rear main seal is a problem in these with the I6 AX15s. A/C HP seals starting to go bad after all these years.

Fantastic cars. First G/C was a 4.0 ZG. Loved it. Really only went up to WJ because brakes on the ZG not up to towing heavy loads. No interest in anything later than the WJ. Currently driving a WJ Overland. Said I'd never sell it but I found a one owner 2003 Overland with 26,000 original miles. Like new. I'll keep this new one until I find a lower mileage one ! I don't go playing in the mud. I tow heavy car trailers and I just love driving it. Remember these were the expensive Jeep when they were new BTW track bar is the first thing to check if you have the REAL BaD death wobbles That's usually the problem if it's shaking so bad you can barely hold on to the wheel. Follow up everything else too of course. Suspension parts not too expensive.

I love my 5.2 zj limited v8. Yeah not a big fan of the quadra-trac 4 wheel all time But it will be swapped out for the 241 or 242 tc. Eventually it will be a 5spd manual but after j source all the parts to do so. Also if you buy a zj behind the front wheel in the wheel well there is a plastic hidden door that WILL hold mud. So when you get of the mud make sure to get that compartment so you can keep your rockers safe. If they are like a hooker don't worry and be happy because the replacement is under 50 bucks. Also the zj had a recall because the fuel tank had some kind of issue so if you go to the nearest mopar or no car dealer then they hook you up with a towing package that gives the fuel tank that extra support. Did it mention it was a FREEEBIE!!!!!

Anotjher post to talk about the noise that is so common to the 4.0L. They basically have two distinct noise signatures: 1) the valve train, which can be worn lifters and other components. It's hard to tell what kind of maintainance schedule any previous owner kept. Infrequent oil changes can definitely cause valve train noise, and this can cause loss of power. 2) Low end noise which sounds like rod knock. Only - it isn't. If there is any part of the 4.0 that is bombproof, it's the low end: crank, rods, pistons, bearings, all have fantastic oil lubrication inherent in these and most other US designed straight six motors. I think America made the best straight six engines ever built. Pick your brand. The clacking noise is piston slap, and for debatable reasons, is caused by one or more pistons wiggling as it slides up and down inside the cylinder. There is no record of catastrophic loss of an engine because of this, just a little early wear on the guilty piston skirts. Occasionally, an egine may be rebuilt, and there may be a piece of a skirt lying in the pan, but the motor never knew it. In the 4.0, the low end clacking goes away as soon as there is any throttle applied. Its just a "resting" noise. Unlike a knock, which does not go away, but gets louder as throttle is applied. They're just very noisy engines. So are Toyota 22r's and later variants, but they are world class engines. The Mercedes straight six was noisy as well, but most people are too young to remember that. My mother's 68 280sl sounded like a diesel, but it wasn't. Even my new 78 Datsun 280Z had lots of valve train noise but ran like a sewing machine.

The 4.0 has a particular tendency for being noisy at idle. It goes away when the motor is under load. In addition to the valve train noise, it is also known for a knocking sound down low, which many people take for bearing noise/rod knock. Usually, it isn't that at all and the noise also goes away under load. It's piston slap, due to the piston skirts being a tad too short, allowing the piston to wobble on it's path up and down in the cylinder. With normal regular oil changes, it does not seem to lessen the life of the engine, although it will eventually wear the piston skirt flanges which in turn increases the knocking sound. The cylinder wall will also eventually become scored as well. Still, these remarkable AMC-based engines just keep on running. I have yet to find anyone who can verify my suspicions that Chrysler, while modifying the AMC engines for HO, may have trimmed the pistons to reduce the mass, thus assisting in the HP gain over the original 258 AMC. To my knowledge, the AMC motors in earlier Jeeps did not have piston slap noise. A bit of valve train noise, but not more than any other American straight six - which were mostly all excellent engines for decades.

I agree 100% with everything that you said the only reason I prefer the XJ is because of the engine versus the size and the amount of aftermarket parts that xjs have is insane but as you stated the price of them has skyrocketed tremendously you used to be able to go pick a $500 one up and drive it forever. Now you can't find a running one for less than 2k and if you do it's gone within the hour.

I agree mostly with what you guys have said (even the part in the vid about the 99mpg goin down hill). Love the one I have as it just eats miles and I'm not at all nice to her. Had it for a very long time now. Heavier sway bars, poly bushings, Bilstein shocks helped a lot with the death wobble, but it has reared it's ugly head a few times since. It stiffened the ride a lot on dirt roads which means go fast (45-50) or slow (15-20), no in-between cause it vibrates a lot and gets squirrely in curves, which can be a lot of fun. It was in very good condition until I met that large piece of wood in the back/drivers side (lots of repair, work). Pushing limits can be fun, but strange events can happen. Another interesting change I tried was an electric cooling fan with a heavy duty (going on memory) 150? amp alternator. I wasn't sure about it, but it smoothed out the engine substantially, mild horsepower gain, half a mile better mpg, and has worked for several years. The whole change over was about $500. Anyway, I am by no means an expert, but I have lots of enjoyment from that 4.0 97 ZJ and many miles. OH yeah, a Dana 44 in the rear. Saw a guy asking $10k for 4.0, low miles ZJ in Alabama 3 years ago. I don't know sales price, but musta been the beginning of a trend. Also, yes, if you blink too hard XJ's are gone.

That may possibly make it hard to pass inspection but there’s ways around that 👍🏾

I’m going to be buying a black 95 zj Laredo with the 5.2 and leather interior in a couple of months for only $500. Problem is that it sat in the woods for the last 10 years, has a little rat damage in the engine compartment, and has a blown head gasket at 238,000 miles. Luckily I’m mechanically inclined, there’s very little rust on it since it’s a Northern California vehicle, and the windows were rolled up for all those years so the interior is in good shape. The owner also told me that she installed a new water pump and radiator right before she parked it, so I think that’s a bonus. Once I rebuild the engine, I know that I have to change the oil and the coolant, but should I also change the power steering fluid and the transmission fluid? Edit: I’m also thinking about putting a Flowmaster exhaust on it to make it sound better.

Nice, the ZJ in this video is almost identical to the one I bought back in the fall - Laredo, 4.0, Selec-Trac, forest green, canyon wheels, cloth interior (but gray instead of tan). Completely unmolested & spent its whole life in GA and eastern VA, so almost no rust top to bottom. After owning a couple of XJs I wanted another 4.0 Jeep, but one more comfortable and less rust-prone than the XJ. Can confirm mine came with trashed headliner and blown-out hatch struts, which I replaced immediately since that hatch is way heavier than you'd think without the struts to assist. Something to note about the oil pressure @ 5:20, the senders are notoriously unreliable on these. Mine seemed to work great at first, bouncing between 20psi and 60psi depending on usage, but lately shows around 30psi in all situations which I know cannot be correct. It's on my "fix this eventually" list 😆

318 is the way to go in ZJ. It costs more to hot rod than a Chevy but they have potential. Get OBD2 for tuning. The V8 comes with the better rear end. The transfer case for a V8 will have to be rebuilt or swapped. 4.0 is only worth it if you are keeping it stockish and want the best mpg.

MPG will be about the same, or, not enough difference to matter. The 4.0 is the workhorse AMC engine that used to be the 232/258. In the lighter Cherokee, it's pretty lively, but in the 600lb heavier GC, it does work a little harder. Still, I prefer it to trying to squeeze myself into a tight spot with that V8 under a very small hood. People forget how small the ZJ and WJ really are - about the same size as the Ford Explorer or Toyota 4-Runner of similar years. Waaay smaller than the Seqouia or newer 4-Runner. The rear end is somewhat tougher with the V8 option (31 splines), but the Dana 35 (27 splines) will get you to 80% of what anything else will do. The last 20%, I don't care about. I'd probably damage body parts before the dif exploded or an axle broke, and those body parts are now VERY hard to find. Likely as not I'd also throw my back out, too.

Bought a welder and fixed the unibody and brackets myself. dropped $1000 on a lift kit, $1000 on 33" KO2s, and wheeled that until my front drive shaft broke, solved death wobble by buying front upper adjustable control arms and adjusting the caster angle. Pulled a high pinion D30 from a junk yard and will rebuild that with 4.10s and have to buy a new front drive shaft. With all the work, shipping, and taxes, it's probably $4000 in and it's far more capable now than it ever was, also it's cheap enough to smash up and not cry over it.

The issue with these transmissions is they are cooled by the same fluids that cool the engine and the temp for the trans can get too high and they fail. If you're any sort of mechanic you can do the job yourself and the kit was cheap. Just search for it on YT and there is a guy that walks though the whole process. Doing that to my 94!
