I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

I’m very excited that Molly did this video, because a lot of people think that getting a guy dog is just all roses. There’s definitely struggle. Bonding takes time. Learning commands and getting out of old habits that you pick up with previous guide dogs it’s hard. There are long days. And there is just so much to getting a guide dog. And that’s just the training. There’s so much more you have to know about whenever you take the guy dog home.
@MollyBurkeOfficial

I mean, it's literally like bringing home a new baby! One of my blind friends has had 2 kids and 2 guide dogs, she said it's as stressful bringing home a new guide as it is bringing home baby! lol
@bry2697
@bry2697 2 года назад
@@MollyBurkeOfficial lol I also have two guide dogs and a newborn and while I would definitely say the newborn is much harder in a different way(breastfeeding every 2-4 hours around the clock, my brain is just mush) both the baby and the guide dogs are incredibly difficult but rewarding 😊 what I've been struggling with is we retired my guide dog early, she developed a vision issue. During the initial transition, we had my old guide stay with my mom and sister but now he's back and he seems so sad sometimes. My husband says that whenever I harness my new dog, and my retired dog is in the room(which when I decided to have both living with us, I said I would avoid doing but I'm blind, so sometimes he walks by when it happens and I miss it) my retired dog comes rushing up, tail wagging, like he's waiting for his harness and I feel incredibly guilty.
@beauR-u9m
@beauR-u9m 2 года назад
@@bry2697 I don't know the rules, so this could be completely not okay to do, but could you just put the harness on the retired dog for occasional walks for fun for him? As long as you had your husband or someone to help guide you considering your retired dog has probably lost skill that could put you in danger.

I'm glad he mentioned that there is a huge difference in the relationship of adults who haven't grown up with dogs and adults who did. The bonding is just so much stronger for people who learned those skills on how to communicate and play with dogs. It's so important and definitely more difficult for adults to learn.

I believe that's true. I've been a cat person my whole life and I don't bond that well with dogs. I find a lot of dogs I've encountered in my life are either too hyperactive or just act mean. I sometimes encounter a calm dog, but that's very rare.

My good friend has a daughter now 16 who had severe epilepsy and autism. She got her first service dog at 8, a golden retriever named Heaven. It changed her life as the dog would alert prior to seizures occurring. That & better seizure treatment really improved her quality of life. Heaven unexpectedly died at 6 yrs old. Then recently she got her second service dog a Papillon. This dog has the uncanny ability to “announce” seizures 90% of the time which luckily is less and less frequent. Her autism has improved with less seizures too. So these dogs can enhance lives so much. And yes she wears a vest and should not be spoken to when it’s on and she is working.Her dog was from a school in Ohio which doesn’t do guide dogs but they cover many other disabilities- seizures, diabetes alerting, autism, balance issues post stroke , PTSD and more.

I'm a two times Guiding Eyes grad. They used to do strict pre-matching but shortly after I got my first dog in 2011 they switched to doing semi-pre-matching. They want to have a few options that might work for you, and you test drive the dog or dogs they have in mind. You only find out breed and gender, but not name until the match is pretty much official. Even then I've seen dog switches in class 3 or 4 days after dog day. I've only ever worked the dogs that I was pre-matched with, just because with my two, we had immediate chemistry, but some people tried 3 or 4 options before they made the choice. I feel like that's a great way to do it.

I’ve really been enjoying learning about the process of getting a guide dog! Thank you so much for sharing this. I have been really interested in becoming a puppy raiser at some point, but now, even more so after watching this series. Thank you, Molly!

Thanks, the interview was super interesting and I love how it was his father watching him bond with a dog that showed that blind kids could have guide dogs just as well as adults

Fantastic interview and fascinating information. I've been watching your channel for years, this is definitely your top video ever. I loved the story about Gypsy choosing you. And, previously, the story of Bennix's long road to be matched with you. Two years ago tomorrow my husband got his mobility service dog. She had a pretty rocky road to be matched to him and is THE best helper, always eager to work. Thank you, Molly, for this enlightening and impactful video.

This is such an amazing series, I really appreciate you spending so much of your time and energy filming and planning such an in-depth look at what you personally have been going through! My SDiT has already given me so much freedom and confidence, and it's a joy to see you working with Bennix 💖

This series is so informative and inspirational - truly amazing (like the rest of your videos). I’m going to write my bachelor thesis in Animal Science in 2022, and i have been considering writing about the breeding and behavior of guide dogs - this has convinced me to write about it 😁

I think it just goes to show how thankful I am for Mira, the wonderful owners and their out of the box thinking, as the well as all of the other service dog companies and their wonderful puppy raisers! ♥ The world needs you and truly couldn't appreciate you more! I look forward to having my own pup within the next few years; I'm excited for independence. :)

I just have to say I really appreciate your honesty. I am considering applying for a psychiatric service dog, and it’s very helpful to know both the good and hard parts of service animals (even if mine would serve a different purpose, there are a lot of similarities). Your humor makes this learning so much fun, too! Thank you so much for being you! You’re awesome!

The advice and information that this video provides has very little relevance to my own lifestyle, but it's hella interesting and I could, without a doubt, watch hours of this conversation.

Due to lockdown and my specific needs I'm still very early on my guide dog journey. I'm currently waiting to take my cane training in the next few weeks, which is another step in the right direction. Right now I'm struggling more than I ever have to safely navigate, and this is a huge set back in my life. Thanks for these open, honest and enjoyable videos. I always leave your channel smiling and you give me a small glimmer of hope that one day this might happen for me as well. 🌟💙🌈

I am working as a volunteer as foster for the only guide school in my country (Uruguay) and they DO prematch but it is not because they think is good idea but because they do not have enough dogs to do what MIRA does
