Hello Bird & Parrot Lovers,
This week's video is one I've been wanting to film for a while! It discusses how our parrots see the world!
I get my trust UV pen out and use it to get an idea of what our parrots may be seeing when they look at different things. Now it's not 100% accurate as they will see slightly differently to this, but it is a very good easy example to show as they see in the UV spectrum.
It's so important to keep in mind that they see the world differently to us & knowing that can help us predict problems or understand behaviours/choices they make.
There is some flashing imagery in the latter half of the video, but a warning is on screen before this pops up!
As usual, any comments feel free!

Great topic! I choose lighter colors for nail polish because of my birds

Very interesting to see the "glowing" food! My cockatiels also get scared of my nails whenever I have nail polish on, especially if it's bright and/or glittery. 💅

My big guys really hate reflective clothing, like safety vests. One of the macaws also hates all neon coloured clothing. Also, even when my conure is asleep and all covered up, I have to watch your videos with headphones on! Dont get me wrong, I love seeing and hearing them, I just find it funny how my guy instantly starts chatting to yours!

We get that a lot with our conures and cockatiels setting off others! Some of the videos they are very well behaved and quiet but most they are being the true parrot selves lol As for the high vis! It’s very reflective so I’d imagine it looks pretty scary to a parrot!

Really glad you enjoyed it and also hope I was descriptive enough! I always try to keep it in the back of my mind when doing videos! I actually speak to a few blind parrot owners regularly and we’ve discussed both parrot vision and also the challenges keeping them with a sight issue! I also did a video on parrot disability including sight loss that you might find interesting too if you like these kinds of themes! There’s also my fave on cockatiel intelligence!

Now that I have given it much thought and researched the topic of how birds see, what kind of lighting/or light bulbs should I be using in my bird rooms ? I found some suggestions, and it only left me more confused. However, I would like your opinion on the matter. Also, what kind of lighting do you and Sophie use in your bird room ?
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 5 месяцев назад
We have a lamp we use and a main light we still need to swap the bulbs on! Use the slow mo test and go for more modern bulbs! The less they flicker the better they are!
@rhonda2260
@rhonda2260 5 месяцев назад
@TheParrotTeacher Thank you for your response. I think I will go with the full spectrum UVB light. At least CRI 91 is what I found in my research. Any thoughts on that ? I'm just trying to watch out for my feathered babies and make them as comfortable with the light as possible.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 5 месяцев назад
I need to do more research myself honestly before I can respond to that! UVB is slightly better from what most say as a quick reply.

My niece and nephew loved seeing my cockatiels feathers under uv light, but it got me thinking, if cockatiels see like that, then is a cage with white bars ok for them as surely it would look very white?! Thanks
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 5 месяцев назад
It is interesting isn’t it? So that’s also a good question and on top of that raises more lol! I plan to do more content related to the topic but I need to do more reading first. In short, yes it may bother them Slightly or they may like it and it could be easier for them to see. There’s also the factor of uv being filtered by windows that will impact how they see it!

@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 5 месяцев назад
That’s a tough question. To the extent that may they see a word like “treat” and then have a behaviour paired to it like going to a close by dish definitely. But to the extent us humans can, no probably not. They are pretty smart but maybe not to that level. I say maybe as it’s not something I’ve tested or seen tested before!
