Most purchased--- Proteins (chicken, tofu, salmon, eggs); veggies (greens, onions, garlic, cauliflower, cabbage, green onions, mushrooms, carrots, limes, etc); distilled water for drinking (the water where I live tastes horrible). Also, although I need to keep my cholesterol/fat intake low I do love cheese (cottage cheese, sharp cheese, provolone, mozzarella, etc etc etc) And once in a while you'll see potato chips in my cart (who can resist!?)
Depends on where. Kroger for fresh items/other essentials weekly. Costco meats that I can freeze monthly. H Mart for my Korean ingredients quarterly. Trader Joe’s for misc fun to try foods quarterly.
I notice what the person in front of me at the checkout is putting on the conveyor belt and many times they are buying absolute nothing that I ever buy.
As a European who has recently moved to the US I am not quite sure if the 'cheese' isn't really just 'ultra processed oil'. I'm having to do a lot of adjusting between real and fake; furthermore, how to eat with the foods that are available at the store. The NYT is helping me along ❤
When you detailed the most commonly purchased items, I thought to myself that I buy all of them except bread. I buy flour and make my own bread. But other than that, I felt pretty normal.
OMG! I love Priya Krishna's articles, videos and lessons. She is really something wonderful and creative. And honest. She's honest! The best part about any reporter and creative artist. Honesty!!! You can trust honesty.
I think my most common purchase is milk (we often eat cereal for breakfast), some meat (beef or chicken), and a frozen meal (if we don’t feel like cooking). Hadn’t ever thought about my grocery list in terms of items (usually I’m more worried about the cost 😂) so that was interesting!
I have a toddler so my most common purchased item/s are berries/fruit! We also cook a lot at home, so produce in general is popular in our cart, I also love to bake so I always buy butter 😅
My most purchased items having two kids: bread, eggs, milk, frozen fish, fruits/veggies, yogurt, crackers, frozen veg: either mixed veg, peas or corn, sauces: I swear half my fridge is condiments alone, and rice everything else is dependent on prices/budget and what is actually needed atm
I get comments from the checkers, like “ You’re never going to get scurvy”, or “how do you cook that?” I rarely buy drinks or chips and almost always get different kinds of cheese. Also live in Alaska, and can attest to bare shelves at times, sour milk once in awhile, but huge variety of produce and products.
I rarely buy meat or eggs from the grocery store, since I purchase them from local suppliers. I generally purchase veggies, cleaning supplies, dry goods, ready freezer meals, lemonade and sweet tea.
I think about this all the time. I travel a LOT for work and don't always have a good kitchen. So I think people must think I don't know how to cook sometimes when my cart has ready to eat or easy to assemble meals in it
I'm Dutch and will shock my fellow Dutchies with 40 euros worth of herbs and spices each month xD But eggs and cheese are probably the most purchased for me.
I always marvel when there is zero overlap with what Im buying and what the next person is buying. I shop 80% fruit and veg, 10% grains, beans, nuts, and 10% dairy like yoghurt and cheese!
So cheese, bread, cow's milk, and potato/corn chips are four of the top five items...? Oh America, you reveal yourself via grocery cart... Very interesting. Is there a longer video coming? I like Priya, I remember her from BA test kitchen
Great opportunity missed to talk about corporations gouging prices of groceries during pandemic and no reset now And, the USA lack of regulation on mergers especially now with recent news of proposed merger between Kroger and Albertsons !!!!
I buy apples and salad and cucumbers almost every time I go shopping. Some may look at what I buy and think I'm pretty healthy, but I eat a lot of chocolate haha
Strangers will think I cook a lot. I buy flour, butter, milk, block cheese, eggs, canned tomatoes and sauce, a few frozen and fresh veggies, a little fresh fruit, a bag of oranges for fresh juice at breakfast, and a little bit of 80/20 ground beef and air chilled chicken. Cocoa, sugar, spices, pasta, rice, beans, cooking oil, etc. I add as needed just to keep stocked in the pantry. Bread, lunch meat and chips are only for my husband's lunches. You won't find juice, snacks, canned goods (other then beans or tomato), convenience meals, cereal, or highly processed foods in my basket. Bacon, sausage, ham and breakfast meat is now a splurge item.
the topic you're exploring is extremely interesting, but this may be the most boring short form video I've ever seen in my life. it was extremely hard to get through
TONE DEAF TIMES AT IT AGAIN! Our grocery receipts reflect our unlivable wages, depression and getting what we crave while we have the money, but go off 🤡
