Have Companies & The US Government Pay You!
app.silomarkets.com/launch
Remember toolbars? In the 2000s, toolbars were everywhere. You had toolbars for search, eCommerce, torrents, shortcuts, and basically everything else under the sun. And who could forget bloatware toolbars that would get installed when you were trying to install something completely different. Fun fact, Google’s own toolbar was bundled in with a bunch of other software, and it was what largely put Google on the map originally. But, over the years, toolbars have basically completely disappeared. It’s easy to write this off as just technology that was no longer useful and for the most part obsolete but there’s actually much more to the story. You see, both the rise and fall of toolbars can be attributed to a single company that had more control over toolbars than any other: Google. When Google launched Chrome, they no longer needed people to use their toolbars or any toolbar for that matter. So, they simply didn’t support toolbars, and as people slowly moved over to Chrome, toolbars completely faded away. This video tells the story of the rise and fall of toolbars and Google’s massive role in the whole ordeal.

Technically speaking, ribbon was an alternate term for toolbars in the 90s. The term was used by Microsoft Word 5.5. However, the term toolbar became more common. When Office 2007 was introduced, the new UI introduced tabbed toolbars that Microsoft called "the ribbon." It's really not ribbons but one ribbon with tabs. So today, "ribbon" interface refers to tabbed toolbars instead of one horizontal toolbar that stacks on top of or right next to each other.

The desktop "toolbar" wasn't quite the same thing as the browser's toolbar. Desktop apps' toolbars were simply a long row of icons that served as shortcuts to commonly used functions. The browser's toolbar, on the other hand, had different features like weather forecast, a search bar, drop down menus, news ticker, and shortcut links. Yes, ribbons replaced the simple strip toolbar in 2007. I didn't like it at first, I thought it was ugly looking and cluttered with too many things, but I've grew to accept it.

Hello, I happen to be the creator of the screenshot shown at 0:18. It's funny to find your meme alive and well on the internet 20 years later. To provide some context, the screenshot was taken on a high school computer lab PC. I got bored during programming class one day and decided to see how many toolbars IE would allow me to display. 3:18 The "Ribbon" terminology didn't come into play until MS Office 2007, many years after browser toolbars were common (late 90s and early 2000s), and it was actually a derivation from the toolbars that Office already had. The ribbon based interfaces are still passionately argued about to this day because they are so fricken clunky compared to menus and toolbars. But they do have their merits. Namely merging menus and toolbars into one cohesive interface. If you would have had several toolbars, a ribbon interface can use less screen real estate. Otherwise, they use a lot more.

I actually remember seeing somebody with toolbars taking up most of their browser and asking if they really used all of them and they said yes. Boy was it an eyesore and I can't imagine trying to the the web with so little space for the page itself. I don't think I ever had more than 2 toolbars installed. Considering how demanding they were of screen real estate - I'm glad they eventually got replaced with extensions instead.

The toolbars and bad software was especially rampant in Norway. During this era, Java Runtime for the browser was a REQUIREMENT to log in to do your banking. And of course with the vulnerabilities that it had as well as the frequent updates, the banks were eager to link to the update utility to get it installed, but never said a word about that extra tickbox you had to untick to avoid the software avalanche. You got 1 thing that then opened up for installing more things that installed more things, the longer it got to run, the more bloatware and possibly malware you would get. All because the user forgot to untick that one box when updating their required Java Runtime... Today it is gone though, and the issues vanished.

Microsoft did not invent the ribbon until 2010, after toolbars fell out of favor. I remember downloading a couple of these toolbars back in the early 2000s then reading an article about spyware in PC Magazine. I uninstalled those toolbars immediately and used one of the recommended tools in the issue, which rooted out some more spyware.

They became extensions. Look at all the shopping add-ons you can get for browsers.

After the story, damn, I stay even closer with Mozilla now. No other reason but don't want to see companies like Google or Microsoft dominant the web, that's crazy

An old buddy who had no clue about computers used to have a ton of porn search bars and add ons from dozens of websites. I just looked at him and said "you know better than this" 😂

I had forgotten about toolbars. I think I must've intentionally repressed that memory because I remember them taking up precious screen real estate while not bring much else to the table. Think about it this way, if I spend 2% of my time actively searching, that means for 98% of my browsing time, the toolbar has zero functionality while blocking a non-insignificant portion of my viewport. It's much worse if I had multiple installed. What a mess those could be.

Recently you posted an opinion of ads/ adblock for Google to raise money. If Google thought about this issue seriously they would be charging people who post on RU-vid. Memory is expensive, not to mention the maintenance of the servers and other peripherals required to host videos. The charges could be a percentage of what each person earns. The free ride should be over.

It was the introduction of the omnibox that killed the toolbar.

Honestly, I hated toolbars on my browser. I would disable it if an application installed one without me knowing. It just makes the browser look ugly and some of them would be bloated making the browser crash sometimes
