I’ve been thinking a lot about reading for fun and fun reads of late, so I thought I would have a chat about it. When I say chat I of course mean tangential ramble. But I would love your thoughts on fun reads and reading for fun. I would also love to hear what the last book you had lots of fun reading was. And if you’ve a question for a possible Q&A leave that in the comments below too. Thanks in advance. #BookTube #FunReading #BookChat

People think it’s weird, but I love reading YA and middle grade books in between darker and heavier books. In fact, I love YA and middle grade in general even though I’m twenty-four. I read everything.

I'm 67 and I love the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series by Michelle Paver. I've read all 9 books twice - last time was in 2022. I've also listened on Audible. Not sure what that says about me....

Middle grade and ya are great to read, and this is the problem with books being put in categories if your interested in the content it doesn’t matter books can be read by all ages no matter the label on them! Enjoy them i know i do 😊

People might laugh but when I'm wanting to just cozy up with a comfort read, I revert to my childhood. I listened to the Audiobook of The Castle of Adventure by Enid Blyton yesterday, I was feeling blah and I decided to lose myself and relax in childhood. I really enjoyed the audio of this, listening to a story of four children having an adventure! I thought that would have been my dream as a kid, to go off on an adventure with a close knit group of friends. This was cozy and nostalgic in the best possible way. Sometimes it's good to go back!

Hi Simon! I totally relate to your desire for “fun” books and have been on the lookout for some myself - so I will be referencing back to your recommendation and the comment section here. I recently read Ann Patchett’s newest release “Tom Lake” and it definitely qualified as a fun read! It’s quite contemplative and calm, while also having some plot points that drive the story and keep the reader interested. I found myself wanting to pick it up all the time and left feeling so happy, simply because the story focused so much on the small joys in life, which was really contagious. All the best to you during your procedure and resting time!

For me the fun books are the ones that remind me of childhood reading, ones that make you want read under the covers deep into the night (or like, 11 pm which is way past my bed time! 😅) For me those are often fantasy or sci fi books, because they have that adventure aspect to them. In a slightly different genre I really enjoyed Vincent Van Gogh and the artists he loved by Steven Naifeh. It looks a bit like a coffee table book with lots of pictures, but it is has real chapters with writings about how not only Van Gogh improved his craft by imitating his contemporaries style, but how artists form a living collective art work. Also, the book is a love letter to Steven’s husband who co-wrote a biography on Van Gogh and who had passed before this book came out. It has pictures from their private collection that they gathered during their life together. I figure if you are laid up it might make for some enjoyment looking at pictures.. I guess I am assuming you like Van Gogh- if you don’t, never mind 🙃

Enjoyed this video with chat about recent reads. Marian Keyes is my go to for fun books that I can't put down! Not light-hearted topics, but the way she depicts families and the conversations or 'banter' they have is brilliant reading and a go to place for comfort. A book I read recently that I had a lot of fun with was Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld and also Bridget Jones's diary which I read alongside the book chat podcast with Pandora Sykes - so much fun and recommend that episode if you've not listened! Hope the procedure and recovery goes well and you find some fun reads to keep you entertained!

Great topic. I try to always read for fun, and, to be fair, don’t read a lot of 19th century classics because sometimes it can feel like you’re wading through treacle. The House Keepers looks good, I’ll look for that. I started Daisy Jones and the Six but haven’t picked it up again because it felt a bit “slight” and so far not quite as insightful and beautifully done as the script to Almost Famous (which seems comparable….possibly). I’ve enjoyed the books by Hiromi Kawakami, they’re fun and light. I like Blake Crouch’s books too, but I don’t know if you go into genre fiction much….?
@SavidgeReads
@SavidgeReads Год назад
It depends on the genre to be honest. I’ll dabble in almost anything if the mood is right. Daisy Jones, like any book, won’t be for everyone and as I always say with any book someone isn’t really vibing with, even if I love it, if you’re not loving it. Don’t read it.

Old God's Time is not going to be a fun book whatsoever. Just sayin'. 😶 I've been trying to give myself more permission to read more fun books. A recent favorite was None of This Would Have Happened If Prince Were Alive by Carolyn Prusa. I mean, that title alone. It's set during a hurricane, which certainly isn't fun, but the writing is propulsive, and I finished it in less than two days. A few other recommendations: The Book of Delights by Ross Gay (short essays); We Love Anderson Cooper by R.L. Maizes (short stories); Cat Brushing by Jane Campbell (short stories, debut author at 80 years old and these are a bit on the raunchy side); Bad Marie by Marcy Dermansky; and Sounds Like Titanic by Jessica Chiccehitto Hindman (memoir).

Last fun book I read - why mummy swears by gill Sims. I don't have kids, I don't drink or swear, I picked the first book in the series up spontaneously, and I really enjoyed it, it made me laugh. I reserved and read the second book immediately after the first, which I almost never do. The book's are told over a year, each chapter a month and smaller day entries from there,which made it a quick and easy read.

If you haven't read Joan Dideon, I find her essays to be quite surprising and "fun." Slouching Toward Bethlehem is a good start with her. Ninety-nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret was snippy but definitely a fun look her interesting life. Me, audiobook read by author Elton John was one of my most-fun reads! It would be a perfect recovery listen. Its the wrong time of year to listen read it but for someone who loves NYC, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk is a well-crafted narrative that had me fully-engaged at all times. And then there are the classics: A Tale of 2 Cities, Madame Bovary, Vanity Fair, Les Miserables, My Antonia, Great Expectations, Great Gatsby, Cheri, Nicholas Nickelby. Just avoid Faulkner, Hardy and Tolstoy if you are looking for fun (and I'm a huge Hardy fan.) Fun books to me are just books that I enjoyed reading regardless of the topic. I have read some outstanding history, biographies, romances, classics etc. That is the one of the joys of reading is that there is something out there for everyone. For instance earlier this year I read What Moves the Dead by T Kingfisher and compared it to The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe and really enjoyed both of them ( not my normal Genre ). I also love to read classic Sci-fi even though a lot of people feel that it is out dated. I enjoy the imagination that went into them when we knew so little about space yet even now we still know so little. Bottom line what is run with what is fun, or enjoyable or makes you happy and don’t worry about anyone else.
@SavidgeReads
@SavidgeReads Год назад
I’m not worrying about anyone else. I’m more just pondering what makes a book fun, not funny, just fun. And lots of books can be fun in all sorts of ways. I do think though, and I’ve been thinking about this since I made this video, the industry is more geared to serious worthy books than fun ones.

I think the most fun I’ve had reading this year has been: I’m A Fan Bandit Queens Demon Copperhead (because of the narration) Chain-Gang All-Stars Penance Still Life All quite dark actually (except Still Life) but just fun to read. I’m listening to the audio of The Bee Sting at the moment and it could well end up on this list. I don’t think it’s ‘funny’ but it’s definitely lightly, enjoyably written. Such an interesting topic to think about though. For me I think fun is mostly about ‘reading without labour’. Not having to work at it. Which means: 1. The writing is easy to read (which can still be beautiful or ‘good’ writing) 2. The book is more plot driven (i.e. I’m not having to work out WHY this book has been written or what is going on) 3. The themes can be heavy, but I’m not left questioning my own mortality or existence Not everyone’s idea of fun fits this (something like Isabel Waidner is definitely not in keeping with 1 or 2, but people find their work fun) but that’s my take on it at least! Thanks for a lovely video as ever, Simon ❤

I haven’t. But I have it on my shelves. Thanks for the reminder Hannah.

Ok, I hope this doesn’t backfire, but I’m going to recommend Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge as a “fun” women in translation read. It has thriller/fantasy vibes that i would characterize as fun because each chapter features a different beast, and uncovering this strange world is unnerving and intriguing all at once. 😬👍🏻🤞

I had an unexpectedly fun time reading Marple recently, the 12 new short stories by different authors. I would echo what someone else said about Marian Keyes. And another fun read I had this year which was unexpected was Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.

I read that Marple series and enjoyed a few. It made me just want to head back to all the Marple novels… now that could be fun. Marian Keyes I must read more of. Middlesex was a surprise DNF for me. I thought I was going to love it.

I loved thw first two books in The Last Binding' trilogy by Freya Marske, historical setting, a bit of magic, a bit of romance and a good mystery😊

I’m with you as I love a fun read, i always revert to historical crime fiction when i want to escape. Have you read the E S Thomson series, which are set in victorian times and set around an apothecary but don’t want to say anymore in case you want to read it if you haven’’t already. Also i do love the Ben Aaronovitch series rivers of London which are a fun read, which is supernatural crime! 😊

When God Was A Rabbit by Sarah Winman is hilarious , sad and everything in between , a brilliant book. Then I loved Three Things About Elsie by Joanna Cannon which just reminded me so much of my mischievous gran when she was alive. Hope you get well soon Simon. Lynn

I’ve read all Jo and Sarah’s books. Utterly wonderful reads and the exact mix of fun with layers I love.

Good luck for next week. Heal well. I find all the books by Dawn French are brilliant and fun. I can't be doing with silly stories either in books or shorts they just irritate me. project Hail Mary isn't laugh out loud funny but it is a fun read I think.

I liked Dawn’s latest novel waaaaay more than I expected. The first one I didn’t finish as it was toilet humour to the max and I felt a bit infantile BUT that could have been my mood. I thought her last one was super powerful.

I DNFed The Hole a few years ago. I wasn’t in the mood to read grotesque descriptions of characters, which is probably part of the discomfort the book wants us to feel. Maybe I’ll revisit it. Maybe.

I just found it a bit dull and depressing. I wanted escapist fun really f**ked up horror and that’s not what I got.
