Killeen is a city of about 150,000 people located 70 miles north of Austin, Texas. It's part of the Killeen-Temple metroplex which is almost 500,000 people. The region kinda goes by unnoticed in the state because it's dwarfed by other surrounding metroplexes. It's known as a military boom town and it's largely a military city. This started in the 1940's when Camp Hood was created for training for WWII. Camp Hood was renamed to Fort Hood which was renamed to Camp Cavazos. It's a diverse city due to the military (including diverse food from regions that they visited) and it's the third largest military base in the world. Elvis and Jackie Robinson were stationed here for a bit. The city is primarily suburban sprawl, but there is a historic downtown Killeen area right outside of the east gate to Camp Cavazos. They have heritage festivals there and authentic international restaurants and it's undergoing a revitalization to promote community and make it less like a giant suburb. I found some Hawaiin food in the city before heading out to Wilson Valley Mercantile for the Songwriter Roundup hosted by Eley Buck Davis. Good times.
