I found that the barrier coating for boats makes the BEST primer for metal. If you take your time and get several coats on it, it will stop rust in it's tracks. It seals incredibly well. When you sandblast your bed spray that barrier coat first then prime it and paint it and it will hold up until your tired of the truck. Best of luck to you.

I like the Goodyear Duratrac. Some folks say the sidewalls are weak but I've never had any problems. I'm living in Fort Mcmurray Alberta and the mud up here is greasy, this is the oil sands country, but I take my 8000 lbs Cummins to places that I probity shouldn't. I pulled up to a campfire on a sandbar in a river bottom where a couple of men had come in on 4-wheelers and one of them walked over and ask "how did you get that thing in here?" They are well mannered on the hwy, pretty good in snow up to knee deep, but lack on black ice. You can get them studded.

Matt, as far as trucks go I believe you’re on the right track with a Dodge. I used to have a 1999 Ram 3500 with the 5.9 liter 24 valve Cummins which was a really great workhorse just stock with a 5 speed transmission. I pulled a 9 ton excavator several times through the mountains in North Georgia with problems at all. I will say that those older Dodges had smaller brakes, so if you do a lot of heavy towing you will really go through the brakes. I like the fact that you carry enough tools and parts to try and be prepared for most anything and that is something seldom seen today. If you remove items from your toolbox just make sure sure very selective. Keep up the good work it’s a real enjoyment to watch your videos.

Something you don't have: a Burke Bar / Buggy Axle. Find an old horse drawn buggy (hard to find, but they exist) get one of the steel axles. Cut one of the 2 spindles off, flatten and make a wedge on the cut off end and put a bend in it. Use the spindle end as a handle and as a spud to line up stubborn holes. The buggy axle is better than a Burke Bar but, requires some manufacturing. You can customize it a little more. I used a torch to cut the spindle and flatten / sharpen the end. My buggy axle was stolen some years ago, and I can't find another one.

A service body in general is a good idea. When you repair rust and you need it to last, get and use cavity wax. Verhcor did a nice video on that using only consumer cavity wax products, nice of him, since he uses the pro products on his rebuilds. The rockers, door bottoms etc you use it on DO NOT rust!

The 6.0 may disappoint on occasion, but a dodge will disappoint daily. The interior is uncomfortable, heat never works, bodys rust worse than the rest, transmissions are not very good, and they drive like crap. Id recomend a 6.7 f350, or bare with me, a Cummins swapped F350.

This vids a few years old but ill toss my 2cents in. Tires, if you can stand only having a 285, toyo m55s are the only tire to run for a truck with weight on gravel. As for an extended cab cummins. The 2nd gen tax is steep. So id reccomend just swapping a cummins into the ford. I think you can even keep your ford automatic. For the service bed. As a guy whos truck is used as a do all truck. I like the idea of having the ability to add and remove boxes as i see fit. And i dont like being stuck with a service body. But you have trailers and may not have the need for a 8ft flatbed as much. Long story short id just add a cummins to your truck and get some custom boxes made for your flatbed.

For tires I run either Cooper discovery AT3 or Firestone Transforce at had good luck with both. Service body look for one that has the long clam shell lid on the top, great for longer stuff my last one was a Royal steel body which I loved really well built.

The way I do things is look at is what you need to have, tools, oils and the like, sit down one night and design one on paper to hold those items in their respective place, you should be able to come up with a design to suit your needs, for me its just a small tool box fixed to one side of the tray to keep everything dry and not rattling around, but i don't need to carry a workshop with me plus their's the theft issue, if not required the extra weight wears out the vehicle plus uses more fuel for nothing.

Best thing with rear bed to fix and stop rust is POR-15. It's a restoration paint. All you have to do is wire brush the scale off, wash and brush it on. The rust gives it tooth and paint turns to steel. You can drag your bucket off flat bed and not leave a scratch. Cheapest way out of rust and it won't come back.

An easy solution to the sweating undercarriage storage box problem would be to use one of those chemical silicone bead dehumidifiers. If you save one of those large "do not eat" bags from a large package or buy one of those buckets and put it in the storage box, it will absorb all the moisture from the inside.

Some folks complained because the interior is dirty? Hello folks, it's called A WORK TRUCK for a reason. Nice content Matt. Until you showed that side box, I was worried you didn't have a good set of jumper cables. When I had a pick up truck, I used it to go to and from work, but I was a senior inspector conducting internal affairs investigations with Inspector General's office for Fla. dept. of corrections. I did haul plywood and other things when I was doing woodworking projects at home. I also kept electrical and duct tape, gorilla glue and assorted bungee type hold down cords in my tool box along with tape measures and roadside repair tools. And since you usually work alone, one can see why you carry a wide assortment of items.👍

I would get a 6.7 power stroke with one of the services body’s that has lower sides so you can haul a gooseneck. As for tires the ones I like are either good year wranglers or toyo open country at2’s.

Almost bought an 05 4x4 F550 with Cummins/Allison a few weeks ago with a service body with short sides that necked down in the rear for a gooseneck, just wished it would have had more miles or been about $8k cheaper. Couldnt justify the money seeing it would sit more than it would be used and my ‘01 F250 has performed flawless although slow lol. Good luck on your search.

As far as the bed goes, I have no experience with utility beds. I made the same mistake that you did when I put a flat bed on my 77 Cheyenne. Mine is a temco, which has the rub-rails (A custom order) on the back as well as the sides so I don't lose any bed space for a tailgate. The mistake is I should have gone with an aluminum alloy instead of the steel. No rust then. I do have 4 tool boxes hanging from mine which gives a lot of storage space. So I suggest a aluminum flat bed with 4 hanging boxes. As far as the truck goes, I have always been a fan of dependability. For that reason I would suggest The Silverado as it is the longest lasting full size truck on the road. I personally don't care about what is popular, I care about what will last. Thanks for the video!

Instead of paint use rubberized bedliner coating. It will take 2 gallons, comes in Grey or black, and it will last far longer than paint. Also you will need to use a top coat if you choose to use black.

People shit all over the 6.0s but most people have no idea why or wtf they're saying. Stock without a tune or making crazy boost/cylinder pressure they aren't bad. Plus if you did the bulletproofing they're still better than anything after them including the 6.7 cummins when it comes to reliability and lack of EPA shit

Fluid film is a great product for the frame protection, but another product that ive personally found to be great for rust/ rot prevention on already rusty spots, is WD-40 Gel lube, and it is cheaper than fluid film.

Epoxy paint is good protection against rust, of course you need clean surface to apply and epoxy paint nozzle too.

Those Toyo Tires are excellent. I have run them before with good results. I would keep that truck and run it into the ground before buying another. Work trucks get abused by nature. Stretch it out as long as possible. If you want a service body just look around. They are pretty easy to find used and cheap. I got one for $500 for my old Ford. Same issue, the bed rusted out. Love all the lockable storage that the service body has. Good luck

I know you typically go into older things but I would go a 2019 Ram 3500 with it's cummings. That beast is where dodge started getting 1000 Foot lbs of Torque, plus it's where Ram Stepped up it's game really well. Those trucks are really solid.

My vote on tires is mastercraft. Either cxt or axt. You can get both load range e and they wear very well. And for the price you can’t beat them.

Good oil pressure, all the bulletproofing, still performs well - I reckon she's worth some diagnostic work/replacement of the dodgy injectors; fettle the cab and bodywork then treat the box-sections/cavities with Waxoyl or Dinol; and a set of springs. There's life in the old dog yet, and she's treated you well up 'til now.

Your truck is fine, only thing I had was my cigars, lock box gun and a good bottle of whiskey it being a company truck I used it but did take great care of it. at times we would put in a lot of hours ,but I enjoyed what I did it was good with owners that were great to work for.

Matt, I use bf good ridged AT2's 10 ply. I get about 60-70,000 miles out of them and only ever get nails on the side walls and have never had a plug go bad on the side walls. I pay about $185.00 per tire at 285/75 R16. Hope that helps
