I thought the same. And then realized she may be still alive today. In her 80s. And yet she has a look and vibe that she could walk into 2023 straight from the tv show.
Gisele MacKenzie was so talented! She was an excellent singer, violinist and pianist! There are films of her playing the violin with Jack Benny and also films of her pianistic ability from her television show on U-tube.
Lawrence Harvey was a wonderful actor - he was brilliant beside Simone Signoret in "Room at The Top." Simone's Oscar win for that film would never have been possible without Harvey's presence.
What a wonderful show WML is, intelligent & spontaneous with both wit & charm. Betsy Palmer "he didn't say a thing to me" is quick on her feet. In many ways it was the golden age of television. Hallmark Television Playhouse, Alfred Hitchcock Presents...etc.
@@billyshepard5514 Fair enough, but not to we first generation TV kids..... we remember most of these folks... The real thrill for eight year olds was on Saturday... with "Midnight and Squeaky" on Andy's Gang.. "Froggy the Gremlin" from that show was an utter scream.
From what I found, Morna Campbell married Peter Ryan in 1961. He worked with her at WTOP. Peter died in 2018 and his obituary indicates Morna was still living at the time. They had been married for 57 years. Morna lives in Greenwich, CT and she is 82 years old.
@@carolv8450 I believe she was. Too many unexplainable issues with the investigation. She was "reading a book" in bed but her reading glasses were across the room on the dresser. She always used her glasses to read. The lead detective that investigated said he was sure the death scene was staged. Too many things in the room were wrong according to her maid.
The Finch trial Dorothy was covering : Dr fell in love with 20 year old stunner who killed Dr's wife. Two mistrials and one trial, both went to prison for life,
you probably dont care but does anybody know a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the login password. I love any tips you can offer me.
@Yahir Theo i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Perhaps you’re looking in the wrong places. And you are certainly overlooking the human foibles of the panelists, for examples drug abuse and alcoholism.
Starting at 19:04 Lawrence Harvey's hand goes behind Arlene, and then it looks like he's wiggling his finger. Tickling her? Just fiddling with the cloth? What's up? Sort of weird.
This is one of those conglomerations of celebrities very famous in their day 1959 and surely totally forgotten today. Harvey was a actor in several major films who died at 45, Palmer was a perennial panel member on game shows, and MacKenzie was a vocalist on the 'Your Hit Parade' show who was a classy violinist and protege of Jack Benny.
Thank you informing us on these individuals because I had never heard of any of them. I really wish I had been born in my mom’s time and that she had been born in my grandma’s time because it’s hard for me to deal with all our societal garbage today! Such as at 21:00 “Are you a man or a woman?” And John immediately answers, “That’s impossible to answer with a yes or a no.” …However, in our insane day and age, many people would say it’s totally possible and that maybe they identify as this made up fantasy that they’ve labeled ‘non-binary’ today, somehow!! And no one is allowed to publicly disagree, without being viciously cancelled!! 😮😢 So, as a result, no one outwardly flinches or counters it by disagreeing, as they should!! What a crazy world we’ve accepted!!!!!!
I remember Gisele Mackenzie playing the violin beside Jack Benny on his show. She played a counter melody which made his effort sound clumsy (which was his comic staple - the bad musician who thinks he's a virtuoso). In the end he loses it and yells 'Oh shut up!' You can see this on RU-vid and her music is beautiful, as is her rather distinctive face. John Daly was ecstatic to be kissed by her.
Ms. Norma Campbell bore a striking resemblance to an actress named Terry Moore (THE MIGHTY JOE YOUNG film). She's got a wholesome, Debbie Reynolds vibe, too.
might be the only show Aelene didn't wear her heart shaped necklace and I love Betsy but she is such a ditz, It is so funny that a female newscaster would be considered a novelty in the early 60's
I'm going to see one of my favourite "Columbo" villains; I know that. R.I.P., Mr. Harvey...far too soon. Here, we go...after the female broadcaster's reveal...B.C.=zero.
It may seem that way with this panel, before we lost Dorothy, whom was exceptional in Investigative Reporting. (before reporters mainly read scripts) Arlene and Dorothy, ( Arelene in Radio, and television) were highly accomplished in their fields . Bennet had been doing the show for some years, also. A female reporter would be nothing unusual, to him.
Quite a sight: the aloof Laurence Harvey sandwiched between the elegantly efferverscent Arlene Francis and the perennially bubbly Betsy Palmer. I hope those two loosened him up a bit!
Well, SOMETHING loosened him up! Mr. Harvey was a bit "handy" with both ladies: his left hand curved right around Miss Palmer's bare neck to pull her close for a "discussion." His other hand travelled behind Arlene's far shoulder, checking out the fabric of her fancy jacket...gay ? or not, quite flirtatious for a gentleman at that time, and during filming live TV.!
Harvey was a Lithuanian Jew who grew up in South Africa. He guessed Simone Signoret was the MG bc she had starred with him in Room at the Top. She won the Best Actress Oscar for it.
I wonder why, if Gisele is French, one of the letter “L”s was taken out of her name, because “-elle” is a spelling pattern in the French language. Therefore, her name, if it follows the pattern and she really did have French heritage, should have been spelled, Giselle.
It's almost invariably awful when they start tossing out wild guesses on the mystery guest. "Dorothy Kilgallen?" "Genevieve?" "Simone Signoret?" Good grief....
Yes some poor thugs who were very worldly n afraid of being found out who didn’t have the Spirit of love who were without JESUS murdered the poor innocent lady
Much huraah for Harvey as an actor (Manchurian candidate), but as a panelist, he wasn't exactly added value. I definetely disagree with some fans here below. Michael Caine (in the 1960's that is) would have been. Just being "suave" and having the right hairdo and bowtie isn't enough to be considered a good panelist. Furthermore, Harvey had a bit a "snotty" way of talking, which is fine in some roles, but not in a relaxing funny show. Fred Allen had very untypical panelist looks, but his odd, mild sarcasm was worth 495 times the looks of Mr. Harvey. Question for the real WML afficionados; was Daly present at ALL episodes, or was he too sometimes replaced ? I mean, he had to go to funerals, weddings, on holiday etc ?
They made a compilation of memorable moments from the show in 1975. When it aired, the host said that Daly missed four episodes in 17 years. I believe that's true, but the host also said that on the last show, when Daly was the mystery guest, he stumped the panel. He did not.
Harvey was a Jewish Lithuanian who grew up in South Africa, so in Yank ears he was a real English gent (like Leslie Howard, George Sanders, Erroll Flynn...).
Arlene plugs Laurence Harvey in 'Expresso Bongo', in which he plays a ruthless hustler trying to make dumb English youths into pop idols. It was one of the few parts in which this insufferably selfish and conceited actor is bearable. He was never box office and most of his colleagues loathed him, but he was pushed by his boyfriend, a Limey mogul. Harvey was in the States to support John Wayne in 'The Alamo', in which he was miscast but did win the Duke's respect: he finished a take despite being wounded in the foot by an accident on the set.
@esmeephillips5888 When Laurence Harvey was alive, newspaper columnists and magazine writers never said he and another man might have been sexually involved. Several decades after he died, his daughter made a lot of claims to sell a book with a major publisher. A dead person cannot sue for libel. Live in the present.
He is not. He seems to be a decent person who tries to be a snobbish New Yorker but can't hide his basic humanity. And those pins. He went to great lengths to get them in. I can't change pins to puns in the previous sentence. But I was noting Bennett's puns.
I like the way Bennett introduced John Charles Daily. Lawrence Harvey was a heavy smoker and drinker, and died at the age of 45. Bennett the king of BAD PUNS.
