As always, right in there, head deep in those hives, looking at exactly what’s happening!👌🏻 Secondly, your dead right! These old timers are a wealth of knowledge! I learnt so much from my first teacher! Wishing you a good sustained period of weather! That flow looks awesome 😎 💥🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝👌🏻
Interesting video , very much like the way when you open a hive you describe to the viewer what you are seeing , pros and cons, for someone that has not got a lot of experience it's a goldfields of information watched many you tube on bees you would be one of the best . Peter Australia . THANK YOU .
I just have one yard. The first place I look as I approach my bee yard is to see if that damn bear has been there, even though mine are fenced. Then, I glance toward my skunk trap. And, when i get close, I'm always looking up in the trees. There is a lot of things to think about. Thanks again.
We are on a road trip through North Dakota / Manitoba this week and the amount of Canola bloom his HUGE! I am so jealous of the number of supers and hives I see as drive by. I own a fair amount of land in North Dakota and I may drop some hives next year to capture some of the flow!
Ian you are one cool beekeeper! I would love to be standing there watching you test your honey and get a big bite of the bur comb that’s full of honey. Keep up the good work!
Sweet clover been amazing for us this year .. white going better than the yellow did .. seems warmer the weather better it flows .. bees were flying right past the basswood bloom goin after sweet clover .. like next.no pollen coming in added sub on yesterday again they are all over it .. thanks for your help
It depends mainly of what types of flowers they get their honey's from Mine where the same of yours , I hardly be able to lift them the way that Ian is doing The majority of honey that I had was mainly from trees , not so much of plants Definitely not from canola I think that's why we are collecting more propolis
In the past, I’ve seen descriptions of rapidly drying wet honey in a hot room with several consumer dehydrators. Lots of air moved around. If I recall, 2% + in 12~24 hrs. Consistent warning to monitor closely because easy to miss and end up overdry Hypothetically, you could set escape boards w/empty’s beneath today, ~ after 2 nights, pull /move wets to fans-on hot room w/dehydrators. According to the theory, from there should be extracting after 24~48hrs
Basher Yes, I’ve done this also but once I start pulling, my process doesn’t stop to allow drying, cycle in cycle, out . Might as well let the bees do it, and bring on fuller boxes to boot
Thanks Ian! This is such a contrast though. Since the first of spring you have been; go...go...go, methodical without hesitation, work the plan... Now it is; I wanna go..., let me think..., ah I better wait.
Ian, that is too funny. We can see it in the video. And we can see from all the Champion fair animals that the kids are as hard working, methodical, results focused and successful as their parents. Your family is doing a great job!
Our flow from the Linden tree here in The Netherlands is at its end, then the harvest time here is over. I think I can pull 30 kilos from 2 hives. Already harvested 13 kilos from the dandelions. There are 3 main flows here: dandelion, acacia tree and linde tree. Acacia we depend on temperature above 20 Celsius.
Are the pollen patties for fatting up your winter bees ? I did that last year when they quit laying in late August. I have six deeps almost full of fireweed honey. It will be my first big harvest. I am so exited !
Dear colleague, thanks a lot for the information this year I will try it out on my apiary, I realized That you have a rutovskaya frame for 230. Everything is super, good Luck to you, I'm sorry I use Yandex translator, although my wife and eldest son are fluent in English and French, and I'm not interested in my hobby at 64
July will make or break a beekeeper... July makes the beekeeper the rest of the months can only break the beekeeper. The guys who do almond pollination would say February.
Hi Ian, at the beginning of this video you mentioned that you were mixing a few thousand pounds of protein mix for patties on the hives in mid to late August. How do you store this mixture for that long with fear of contamination or spoiling? Do you have a way to refrigerate or freeze the pollen patty mix until you use it?
Hello Ian! Thanks for the great informative videos, learn a lot. Just a question I had and just had to ask; would the licking off of the honey affect the moisture content of your next reading? Also, how much honey do you estimate you harvest off the canola crop, say per acre?
Ian- Aside from the time they are in your winter shed, are any of your boxes kept on land you / your farm doesn't own? If so, what percent of the colonies are on someone else's property?
What are you looking as far as water percentage to pull once you average it out (mix it)? I pulled honey this year and once extracted I tested the 5 gal buckets and each one seemed to come in at 19.5%. Thoughts?
Hello Ian. I've been following you on youtube for a long time. I am writing to you from Istabul Turkey. What is the content of the cake you use to feed bees? soy flour, milk powder, pollen, honey, powdered sugar how much do you use?
Ian, I have a question. A friend of mine says sometimes the bees move eggs from the brood area below the queen excluder and into the honey super area. Have you ever experience brood above the queen excluder. This is assuming the queen is large and she is below the excluder. Basically, I am asking, do bees move eggs?
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog Now, that is the most noncommital answer I have heard in a while. lol Okay, here is a more specific question. In your experience have you experienced bees moving eggs to the honey super area?
I personally watched some nurse bees "catch" an egg coming out of the queen. And then about 30 seconds later another bee took another egg. But a thunderstorm was coming, I put it back together and could not see it again. I do not know what they did with the eggs. They were well fed, so I do not think they were cannibalizing the eggs. I still am curious what was going on.
What have you found gives you the best production rate of honey, 8, 9, or 10 frames per honey super? From what I see in the video it appears you run 9 frames per honey super.
Yes, a Juul vape with honey bee approved flavors. But he always does have a lit smoker - one's in his office, feet on the desk, smoking behind his back and finishing off his nice cold coffee right now.
Wendy Jarrett Lol 😂 ha ha ha ha , s l o w But all I got here, unless you can help find a load for a few pallets this way 👍 Although, that crazy New Brunswick Beekeeper has spiked my regular feeding program with some performance , just 50 lbs at a time here
