You might remember these old Wheatstone Bridges from school physics and probably weren’t too impressed. I got hold of this old one and decided to make a short video on it as a teaching aid. Hopefully it is a little clearer or slightly more interesting than normal.

I always loved this principle, a a pair of voltage dividers that form a resistance to voltage converter that just gives the differential output, genius, obvious the differential output wound be fed into a low noise variable gain differential amplifier amplifier in a finished LCR bridge or when using very low output sensors in place of the resistors, ie the strain gauge for a weighing scale and so on, its cool that the same principle can be used with inductors and capacitors too.. great video kram as soon as im well enough i will get in my lab and make a complimentary follow up to this with the capacitance bridge. And also the inductance bridge (Maxwell bridge) ... do you have any strain gauges/load cells around? Maybe a part 2?? 😂.......

Thanks for making this - really interesting. Would be interesting to know how much current a period appropriate Voltmeter would draw? I bought a vintage Air Ministry one for aircraft battery levels, it draws a peak of 3mA.

Thanks, yes, older analogue meters tended to have a larger influence on the circuit being tested. Although they were also well made and last well if looked after.

next up... kelvins wattmeter, thankyou. this is the stuff one should be learning. the meat and potatoes. none of this theoretical wish wash.
