mazda has better looks, power and interior than most luxury brand base models, even porsc macan.

Had a 2014 CX-5 GT. Best car I've ever owned! Glad so many ppl in the comments are choosing the Mazda and not sleeping on it.

The CRV is not for me with it's tiny force inducted engine and CVT. The Mazda just needs a bigger and better infotainment screen.

"... they're for very different people..." Yep, and for me very good steering feel, acceleration and handling are why I like my 2019 CX 5 GT Reserve. The CX 5 exterior styling is very upscale and even more "of a piece" than say, Acrua RDX, BMW, etc. That is it is a cleaner, more refined styling, not busy. And you're right about the "Soul Red" color. It pops but in a nice way, not garish as in say, an orange Audi. (Jus' sayin'...)

I personally like better the Mazda, just had the opportunity to drive both and CRV feels too slow at the start and takes a lot of time to feel the power, while Mazda is immediate. I’m the kind of person that loves instant response and don’t waste a sec when light turns green

I have owned Honda vehicles and Mazda vehicles. I just bought a new 2020 CX-5 Signature, did not even test drive a Honda CRV. Mazda = Fun. Honda = Transportation.

Mazda all day everyday if you enjoy driving and want to feel the road

Head should never pick CVT and flawed tiny 1.5t engine . Few extra qubic feet of cargo are not enough for Honda. Heart and head for CX5.

smaller engine and CVT are part od the problem for CRV that is just cheesy in compare to CX5

I purchased a brand new Honda Prelude Si in 1992 and after 15 years I traded it for a brand new Honda CRV in 2007, which has served me very, very well for 13 years. The wife has had nothing but Accords and now has a 2016 Civic. I am now ready to get back to driving something more fun (like my old Prelude). With Honda’s reliability slipping dramatically over the last several years (and Mazda’s getting way, way better), the CX-5 is currently at the top of my list to replace my extremely practical yet boring CRV. Your comparison review speaks volumes to the younger me....

Mazda is #2 in reliability behind Lexus, #1 in cost of ownership, and #1 in safety in this segment. The honda is a big fart box that will poop itself 60k miles in.

If you get a cx5 it better be grand touring. And nothing less

Honda is fugly and overdone , Full of cheesy plastics and switches... You want more room get CX9 at nice discount price.

TBH, That music is too much and repeats way tooooo much, really makes me headache. Hope you can improve that part, pause the music while you talking or get some other musics

CVT transmission! That alone gets me off the Honda. It drives like a motorised wheel barrow. Zero fun. The Honda design reflects the driving characteristics. Boooring. If You don't care about driving fun and like stale looks, yeah, then it's for You.

If you want drama and fun, why buy and suv at all. Personally when im lugging around the kids/dog/shopping in traffic I want as minimal drama as possible

I've had my '17 CX-5 AWD GT for almost 3 years and have had no issues. My sister just traded her loaded '18 Honda CRV for a '20 Forester. She had multiple issues with the Honda: infotainment screen acting as if someone was pressing it when no one was and the emergency auto brake brought her to a complete stop on two separate occasions when nothing was in front of the car. There are many reports of this happening to many people and Honda doesn't know what's causing it and doesn't have a fix. It's dangerous. Honda is not what it was in the late 90s.

Was a Mercedes-Benz's fan and will always be but bought the 2020 CX 5 really made me another true fan of a car brand. The Cx 5 is so comfortable and especially quiet and smooth like a mercedes e class.

It seems you never mentioned reliability and resale value. Those are important variables a car owner would consider.

The only reason an old Honda loyalist will prefer the CRV over tje CX5 is the illusion that Honda is still more reliable than Mazda which is not necessarily the case..

That's not 2020 CRV, it's 2019. Also, 2020 Mazda Cx5 GTR and Signature are not in market yet.

I had a 2017 cr-v and got rid of it due to many problems including oil dilution and honda refused to do anything about it. To hell with honda! After having 8 Hondas, I will never, ever have another!!!

Nice take on these cars. We've had two Hondas and will never buy another again. The first one was a new 2010 CRV. My wife hated it after a few months. Couldn't merge into traffic, poor handling, uncomfortable seats. We got rid of it a year later and lost a ton a money. Then she went through two Tacomas until she got a Ridgeline 2.5 years ago. Great truck (well, great Pilot with a truck bed). Long story short, she took it to the dealership for an oil change this past October and they charged her $480 for a transmission flush and brake fluid replacement. They didn't tell her how much it was going to be and just told her it was time for her 40,000 mile maintenance. That left a very bad taste in her mouth. Partly her fault for not asking how much and partly Honda's fault for their deceptive practices. They tried the same thing on me during the prior oil change with new filters and I repeatedly told them no. Wanted $180 for two air filters that I got at Autozone for $40 and took two minutes to change. Anywho, asked if she wanted to test drive a CX-5 and she agreed. Loved it. For a woman that loves her trucks, it says a lot to get her into another small CUV. She ended up with a Crystal Blue touring model and it's got plenty of crazy options--so much so I'm not sure why anyone would need anything more. Fantastic car to drive. But my 2017 MX-5 is more fun! HAHA!

The CX-5 isn't 250hp standard, that's only with the turbo. The standard CX-5 is 186hp which is similar to the CR-V.

Both models are 2019s not 2020s

i wish mazda would bring back the manual in limited quantities for the turbo cx5, it would be a one of a kind suv.

Mazda (270cm) has bigger wheelbase than Honda (266cm)... but Honda is 5cm longer...

However, id request you to look up the origins of "chintz" just out of curiosity given that its origins are completely different to its intended meaning in North America. Btw- At 6ft1, would you rather own a CRV or a CX5 ?(assuming that it was your only car)

I was always a honda fan owned 3 have a 2015 cr-v in the market for a new one this turbo engine is a problem as much as I want a new Honda looks like I will be going with the cx5 without the turbo better off honda go back to the 2.5

As much as I like the CRV, I'm not too keen on small engine displacements and then slapping a turbo on them. That's a recipe for disaster down the line. I'd opt for the base engine on the Mazda. Turbochargers are fine and dandy when they're new, but eventually the bearings will wear out.

Has Honda fixed the oil dilution problem?

Just bought a cx5 because at 100.000 miles my pilot needed a ring job. So done with honda

You said these two vehicles “were built for different reasons and end results”, so why are you comparing them?

The CX-5 is a quiet, refined drive. That being said the front seat bottoms don’t offer any thigh support, the arm rest is too far back, the dead pedal is too far forward and the steering wheel doesn’t pull out far enough. In addition the A pillar is too thick and it’s hard to see around. If you are 6ft tall or above, don’t buy this car. The driving position is flawed.

Most commenters favor the CX-5 but then many of them are biased. The CR-V has much more cargo space and is roomier for occupants. That’s a big plus. CR-V outsells CX-5. The top trim CX-5 may be fast but it is much more expensive. The touchscreen system of CX-5 is not state-of-the-art and you can’t even touch it if moving, instead you use a knob on the console.

The hondas made in the 1990s are better than the ones they make now.

Mazda anyday over square plasticky honda

I've been in the market for a smaller SUV for months. But had to have (or not have) the following: 1) NO turbo..2) NO CVT...and 3) if possible no Direct Injection engine. Also, if there is a dealership close, that would be an added bonus. Honda CRV has a turbo and CVT...disqualified! Mazda CX5 was a contender as well as Hyundai Santa Fe. New Ford escape has turbo and THREE cylinder 1.5 engine...disqualified. Everything kept pointing to Toyota Rav4. No turbo or CVT, it has DUAL injection engine and local dealership. I bought one day after thanksgiving. CX5 were expensive and Santa Fe had really poor gas milage...no excuse.

Mazda has a better engine but customers don't need it. They prefer lower mpg, bigger trunk and smooth driving.

Be nice if you compared similar engine models!

More people prefer Mazda in this thread cause they all just bought used ones. Those who bought the CR-V are real owners who value reliability and resale. Only the top trim cX5 with turbo can match the base crv. Do yourselves a favor and don't buy a Cx5. Buy Chinese SUVs, similar "upscale" look but cheaper.

I owned a CX-5 before, sold it after a year. Engine is underpowered, hellish ride. Infotainment is a joke. Both front and rear seats make me feel claustrophobic. Not enough boot space. I now own the CR-V. You can't go wrong with a Honda!
