What is better toe in or toe out?
Generally the rule of thumb is that more toe-in increases understeer and more toe-out increases oversteer. However, with modern cars, especially race cars with independent front and rear suspensions, there is another effect on handling.
What is toe out and toe in?
Negative toe, or toe out, is the front of the wheel pointing away from the centreline of the vehicle. Positive toe, or toe in, is the front of the wheel pointing towards the centreline of the vehicle..
How does toe in affect steering?
Increased toe-in will typically result in reduced oversteer, help steady the car and enhance high-speed stability. Increased toe-out will typically result in reduced understeer, helping free up the car, especially during initial turn-in while entering a corner.
Why do we need toe in toe out?
Toe-in is to compensate for the natural play in the steering / suspension system on a non-front wheel drive car - it then allows the wheels to track parallel. Toe-out is for a front or four wheel drive car to counter the effect of the driving force "pulling" the wheels forward.
What happens with too much toe in?
When two tires are closer together in the front than the rear, the wheels are referred to as toed in. Excess toe-in will increase wear to the outside of the tire. When the front of the tires are further apart than the rear, the wheels are toed out. Excess toe-out wears the inside of the tires.
What happens with too much toe-out?
Toe-related tread wear will cause a "feathering" wear pattern across the tread. If too much toe-in is present, the feathering will angle toward the center of the vehicle. If too much toe-out is present, the feathering will angle toward the outside of the vehicle.
