Thanks for all the tips. I’ve always been able to get up onto the top of my head, but never beyond that. I always suspected it was a lack flexibility in the shoulders but did not know how to address it, these shoulder workouts look like they’ll be the key.

Loved the video! I'm struggling with this asana, and finally got to find someone who gives actual tips for improving strenght. I know I do not have the limitation in my backbend, because I get to do the full wheel pose with some help from my instructor. But when on my own, I'm stucked to the point that I lay the tip of my head in the ground, even when using bricks, I can not let my arms completely straight. I'm getting to the point of thinking that it's all in my head. Any advise?

Don't worry about straightening the arms! Instead, focus on pressing your hands and reducing the pressure of your head on the floor. If you can get your head off of the floor even an inch (2 cm) then hold that position for a few breaths. Then put your head down and rest.And then repeat. don't worry about getting higher, just work at holding your head lifted and get used to holding that position. Once you get comfortable holding for even a few seconds you can then work at adjusting your hands, elbows or shoulders as you need to to make it easier to lift a little higher. I'd suggest that for arm strength in this pose focus on your shoulder blades. When on your crown, push your shoulder blades (accromion process in particular) towards your ears, then push down with your hands.

Thanks for the good tips how to push up into wheel pose. I noticed you have a long torso . are you able to get into a full wheel pose and push up to standing. i believe i have the hip and shoulder flexibility and strength, but i don't think i have enough my thoracic flexibility. what's your opinion or experience you have overcome in the past ?

I actually have a short torso compared to my legs. I've stood up from wheel pose a long time ago, but didn't maintain my practice. My backbending is not that good. What did help in standing up is using the legs and getting your weight forwards over your feet. (I have to turn my feet out to stand up). Practice dropping back and if you can control your drop back, maintaining tension in your legs even when your hands touch the floor, use that same tension to stand back up.

excellent tips. I am finding it difficult to hold the head up for more than a few seconds.

For now, just pause with head lifted. Focus on slowly lifting and slowly lowering. Work at gradually extending your time with head lifted. Or work at pressing a little higher each time.Rather than trying to force your way up, go slowly.

That's fine. Put your head down, rest, then repeat. Work at gradually extending the time you can keep your head off of the ground.
