I threw my first "real" cup/mug today. So happy with how it turned out. Then, I cut part of the corner off with my cutting wire. I'm hoping to even it out when I go to trim.
Ugh! That’s so frustrating, isn’t it?? You may be ok when trimming! Just remember to always press down the wire all the way across- and if you find you’re in a real pinch and can’t fix it when trimming, you can consult this video with the tips! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rUGefSfgY9w.html
I always tell my kids it takes 4 or 5 days of earnest effort to try to get the hang of centering... so, don't be disheartened! Here is a link to my centering video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_1AJVtoMcDc.html Then, here is a link to opening up a centered piece: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YTX_hAbM04Y.html And- I would try making a bowl if you are struggling with a cylinder: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iE7_u9GN2g0.html I hope those help! :-) Karan
Sorry for my delay in responding! I use the Amaco Plasti-Bats. They are very sturdy- never an issue! Mine are over 20 years old now- the only wear they show is on the textured side... that has worn down a bit over the years. I don't know if this link for them on Amazon will work... (I don't fully understand Amazon and different codes for different countries... ;) But give it a try!) It is for a 12" plasti-bat. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0044SEIAM/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=karanspotsand-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B0044SEIAM&linkId=d019f57d025378abc45aacf39dadbce5
You have to develop a sensitivity of how thick the wall is between your fingers... also, the moisture content of the clay is a factor. The wetter the clay is, the less it will be able to support itself. There is no replacement for practice, understanding what you did to make it fail, and then correcting that to prevent it from happening again. :)
Hi Liz! I have several step by step videos... here is a playlist you may find helpful- it gives a detailed description about the centering and pulling! Let me know if that helps at all! :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_1AJVtoMcDc.html
I use white stoneware- Laguna B mix- with grog- midfire- cone 6. You can get it from any clay supplier in the US. I buy mine from Cornell Studio Supply out of Dayton, Oh. cornellstudiosupply.com/
Considering that is a very individual preference, I usually tell my students just make it 1/2" inch wider and 1/2" taller than you want it to be when it is done being glaze fired. :)
ghlyall yes- I agree! Luckily, my wheel is also motorized- so I can use the motor or not! I originally purchased that wheel -as in college I learned on a Randall kickwheel and I loved it! I do love the ease of “coasting” with the momentum of the kickwheel for all sorts of uses!
How big the base is? That is typically determined by the interior opening of the form. If I want a wide base, I open the interior of the base wider, if you want a smaller base, don't pull it as wide when opening. You may need to adjust your hockey puck dimensions to reflect your intended base width as well. The trimming aspect is covered in a different video, but you want to place any trimmed foot under the angle change on the interior!
Hello! Do you make custom mugs? I have a simple coffee mug I would like made, and I even put a down payment on one with someone to make one for me in Eastern Kansas, and that's been 2 years ago.. it's a simple coffee mug. It's white, with a black bottom, and the handle is black, but the uniqueness is that the handle is shaped like a "squared off" question mark, and when looking at it from its side, looks like an exclamation point.. from the video game Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.. I love the series and I would like to get it made, but I don't know where to turn, or who to ask... you interested? I can send you pictures, or you can Google "metal gear revengeance courtney coffee mug" and it's the first pic... I know many people that would also love to have one...
Hello! Thanks for asking- yes- I do custom orders in the style of items I already make. I normally don’t make pieces with designs that aren’t my original creation. You may find a beginner potter who may be interested in doing such a project for you!
@@KaransPotsAndGlass well, it's a simple "looking" one. Not sure if it's hard to make or not. I'm a fan of the Metal Gear Solid series, and a spin-off is called Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Anyways, one of the support people, Courtney, has this white coffee mug, with a black base, and the grip is black, and shaped like a "squared off" question mark and when looked from its side, looks like an exclamation point. If you were to Google "MGR Courtney coffee mug", the first picture shows her holding it, if you were interested in seeing what it looks like... I met with a local potter and I even prepaid a portion of it for her to make it for me, and it's been over 2 years and still waiting..
