I just got a stem cell lab here in my home town. They're doing adverts over the radio. I'm 35 and thinking about getting injections in my shoulder for an old wrestling injury that pains me from time to time.
ColdFusion The fact that they're adult cells makes this even better! I'd hate for something as brilliant and beautiful as this to be tainted by unborn child murder. My grandmother had a stroke way back in 2004, when I was 6. She could technically still walk, but she immediately got dizzy, so she's been wheelchair bound ever since. I don't know if she'll ever have the chance to receive this treatment, but knowing how much this will likely help humankind just... it's just... wow! Just wow!
I don't there should be a problem with taking stem cells from fetuses, obviously there is the issue of people paying for woman to have abortions so they can get stem cells, but I think at least we should save waste stem cells that are left over after birth. Since those will only be used on the individual in question.
It would give you hope, but doctors and researchers are so fucking slow to make treatments available to everybody. they just release these results to make more money and sell patents to big corporations.
All these guys working hard behind closed doors contributing in a huge way to humanity and yet they don't get the recognition like these celebrity parasites.
I can understand the malice. I also can agree with the regard in which they ultimately are sort of worshiped. However what they do is not always truly selfish. They bring joy to millions of people in some cases. Escapism is a very required aspect of human need. However I can wholly agree with someone celebs.
Just give it a thought, who would benefit if they kept it a secret? It's like finding a goose that lays golden eggs. These research are funded. They weren't doing just because they want to (if they did wouldn't that be great).
in every field, there is lot of politics, that prevent science from progressing further. funding, or lack thereof. Older people in the field who are jealous of work done by younger, intelligent, and more vibrant people. It happens, with human beings.

We've been on the cusp of a breakthrough for years. After all the money that's gone into it with no returns I'd start to wonder if it was a scam too. I've always thought so, and I know it's controversial but I think fetus stem cells could do more as well. I think this is a cool field so fascinating to learn about this stuff
It's interesting to note three things: 1. The drilling of the hole hasn't been perfected as most or all of the patients had after treatment adverse side effects, but at least nothing chronic. 2. The study was funded by SB, the company that supplied the stem cells for the study. 3. The study had an emphasis on how the stem cells themselves didn't cause any adverse side effects and 'were safe and associated with improvement in clinical outcome end points at 12 months', but the procedure itself was not. EDIT: In no way am I trying to put a damper on things, and I support most if not all scientific research all the way, but I just thought people should be made clear of a few tidbits of information I found interesting in the actual published pdf.
I’ve always thought that a possible side effect would be a tumour formed too! Truly these findings are revolutionary but as you pointed out, we haven’t discovered all the side effects in the long run. Let’s hope that cases of abnormalities are rare:(
I've been wheelchair bound since 5yrs, I was just 21. Learned a lot about stem cell and few of my paraplegic friends have even gone through this procedure. But it didn't workout at all. I'm so much happy to finally know there is progress on stem cell research. I hope to stand & walk again soon.

Religious groups have been advocating for adult stem cell research over embryonic for years. There are no ethical issues with them because they are taken from the person they are being used on. No embryo involved. Get your facts straight!
Sad thing is we could have got here sooner if religious groups were listened to because 10x as much is spent on embryonic when all of the success is coming out of adult stem cells. I was informed of this in a lecture at Griffith University from a stem cell researcher.
This is really, really big news. I am medical engineering student. I've been hearing about stem cell since early 2000s and finally hearing about confirmed successful application is a definite Eureka moment. Eureka!
MY wife suffered a stroke 5 months into our marriage....she is only 35 and is now paralyzed on half her body, struggles to talk, struggles to remember things as recent as yesterday...i would give anything to find a way to get her into one of these trials but every time i ask doctors about it they don't know anything and are not helpful whatsoever...please if anyone reading this in the comment section knows where i can go to get her a chance at a normal life reply with any help you can...the last 2 years of our lives have been a literal hell....

That was incredible! I had a spinal cord injury 39 years ago and it's possible that stem cells could still improve my condition, using a similar method to what's used in this video. That was amazing! I wish my uncle had lived long enough to have been able to try this method!
My dad has a stroke a few months ago and his PT’s are doubtful about his ability to recover. Technology like this is the only things that gives me hope and keeps me going.

genjutsu_ , It's a *_different story_* my friend. Hawking's case is caused by some *faulty genes* affecting his muscles. Meaning, the stem cell approach may not provide any cure or alleviation. However, newer gene-editing method like *CRISPR-Cas9* may provide a glimmer of hope in his case. CRISPR = Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. The technology is cheap and very precise; albeit, much more are to be explored. Nonetheless, in various parts of the world the technology have had sweeping positive and promising results: from China to the US, to the UK, to France, inter alia.
problem is that even tho hawking have some problem his state is relativelly stable. if we fuck him with a treatment and loose him that would be worst for humanity than just leaving it like this. and he might be free from body but the only way he can comunicate with world is slow so making him able to do stuff faster would be better. and I mean how can you be free from body constrain if you cannot even take dump by yourself

My father suffered with ALS for 12yrs before his death at age 41. My prayer as a little girl was to see him healthy again on this Earth, while I have faith that my father is perfectly restored in Heaven these new advancements offer hope to all of humanity. Stephen Hawking would be the ideal candidate-- if he is not already involved in a stem-cell-therapy effort. Hawking seems to love challenges, and certainly has the stamina to succeed. Obviously, his personal incentive is enormous.
No he's not. He has ALS, which is a genetic disorder. If he'd be supplied with stem cells, they would just again become cells with the ALS gene. His only chance would probably be in depth gene therapy and stem cell supply, but that could also lead to pretty much super cancer.

How exactly? Most stroke cases are caused by poor lifestyle - smoking, not exercising, obesity etc. If anything this enables people to care even less for what they do to their bodies. Of course it is a great achievement and many people will benefit from it.

Another awesome video! You should explain the difference between adult and embryonic stem cells. everybody lumps them together but they have some huge differences: Embryonic stem cells were thought to be superior because they were thought to be the only pluripotent stem cells (blank cells that can become any type of cell) but they have additional challenges because they are foreign to the body receiving the therapy so often become tumors (cancer). Adult stem cells are harvested from the patent, some processes are performed and then they are injected where they are needed, back into the patient. There are no rejection issues because they are the patients own cells. They were thought not to hold as much potential because they are already differentiated into certain type of cell, however they have been recently induced to becoming pluripotent. see: www.nature.com/news/how-ips-cells-changed-the-world-1.20079 Since adult stem cells do not require the destruction of an embryo, no religious or conservative group can possibly have any ethical objection to them.

That was embryonic. This is adult. No one is complaining about them because there are no ethical issues with them. Embryonic have yet to have any success. I was informed by a stem cell researcher at Griffith University that they lead to one thing only, Cancer. Yet 10x as much is spent on researching them.
Only embryonic stem cells, by the way which still hasn't cured a single patient. Adult stem sells taken from bone marrow was used here. No one is complaining about that.
This is wonderful. I suffered two strokes six years ago which paralyzed my right side. I have studied a fair amount on rehabilitation and part of this was to generate new payhways around the damaged areas. The stem cell injections seem to boost this process. Technology is great when put to proper purpose
I reach out lit to California Institute for Regenerative Medicine see if the trials had progression and is commercially available and received this honest reply for which I’m grateful “It didn’t perform as well as hoped in a second clinical trial and they are now revamping their approach to try and replicate the success of the first trial, but that might be some time.” If anyone know of any commercially FDA approved Stem cell therapy, please reach out.
I hope these results are permanent and have no serious side effects, but what side effect could be worse than the conditions that these patients were enduring before this treatment? Certainly this is deserving of a Nobel Prize should these results be reproducible with this next series of human clinical trials, and I'm pretty sure they will be. If they are, then I hope the FDA will fast track this therapy to make it available in a matter of days, and if not, I think we should riot in the streets until they do. Bravo, Stanford University and Dr. Steinberg and your research staff, well done.
