VAC has been notoriously terrible. I know of a guy who had both of his legs blown off from an IED in Afghanistan. He still has to prove to VAC every year that his legs are still gone. I hope VAC changes soon cause holy shit, they are bad

I love the "HEADS NEED TO ROLL" statement. I said that to the US VA hospital. I was labeled and they blocked my secure messaging ability. If anyone is wondering... Secure messaging is the ability for a veteran to communicate with their primary care team at a VA medical location. So it didn't stop there... the VA hospital contacted the local police department and labeled me an immediate threat. A police officer read my message and called me. He said he was trying to De-escalate the situation. I told him calling me and telling me I am a threat does not de escalate the situation it makes it worse. I then asked him was there any statements that were threats? NO. Was there any derogatory remarks? No. I said was there any words that were in caps lock? No. Was there any swear words? No. So where is the threat? Be said well the heads will roll comment. I said ok well let's google that. I did while on the phone. It comes up to a reference of losing a job or saying that people will be on the choping block i.e. get fired. So it's in reference to the time when people would have their heads cut off. But as time went on it is referencing someone losing their job. Nothing violent. I then told him I can't help it if someone's feelings get hurt. But that doesn't make me a threat. Maybe you should call them up and explain to them how the world looks at that statement. Then tell them it never would of been said if they actually were doing their job. I hung up. That phone call happened bout five years ago. That's how jacked up the VA is. It took well over a decade to get the disability I deserved. By then the damage has been done. My injury has fucked up my body severely. The VA tree needs to be shook and shook hard. All the bad apples need to be fired. Probably about 85% of the VA staff needs to be fired without any benefits and or pay.

Not VA related, but there was a paper written by the head medical ethicist for Canada. It related to MAID being performed in a pediatric setting. One of the things they determined was that "in some cases the parents should not be informed until after the procedure is complete." Killing kids in hospitals, without the knowledge of the parents, is considered ethical in Canada.

Hey AC thank you for covering this. As a 🇨🇦 Canadian Veteran with PTSD and severe depression this has pissed me off to no end. Even just one Veteran being offered this is just to much. The politicians and higher ups need to be fired from there jobs. The biggest issue that I have always had with VAC is they always deny any of your claims and you have to appeal every claim. It took me 6 long months just to get my first assessment from a Psychiatrist to say that I needed help. It also took me almost 25 years of fighting them for my hearing loss. Yes I even had documentation in my military records from a Military Doctor and hearing specialist stated that I had lost hear while on active duty. You are right about keeping all your documentation because the will always try to screw you over at every chance that they can. Well that is grunt life for you. Do what no-one else will do and if you are broken then we don't care about you until you make enough noise for them to listen. Thank God for my wife and doctors that I am here and getting the help that I need.

Before you get out of the army, make sure that you have copies of all your medical paperwork before you ever turned it into the va. I know several people who've submitted things to the VA and lots of that paperwork magically went missing. My self included.
They never believe us, until it happens, and often times not even then. Being smart enough to tell which way the winds are blowing is a curse, bc no matter what the lemmings are still driving the whole herd right off the cliff while blindly ignoring obvious signs.
I just had to write an article behind the ethics of assistance in dying for college, everyone in my class was for the procedure until I brought up all the instances of veterans being offered maid and then everyone seemed to be against it. Glad to see that when you provide evidence from scenarios like this that people have a change of heart.

While playing for my compensation, I received a letter in response to my service medical records. The letter stated dear veteran we are to inform you that your service medical records were destroyed in the fire in St. Louis in 1978 or 1979 in St. Louis. Well, those dates seem very odd for me so. So to get some clarification on the destruction of my service medical records at such a weird date for me. I am down to my local VA hospital to see what’s up. So while I am now at the VA in that uncomfortable chair with the ballistic glass separating myself and the veterans affair officer. I slide through the little crevice between the two my letter. The veteran service officer confirmed there was a fire in St. Louis destroyed many veterans service medical records. At that point I proceed to ask do you have my information on your little screen? What does it say is my date of birth? With that fresh mind F*^!@?& look on their face like when a PVT has their first shark attack. VA officer. You DOB says 1982 on my screen. I’m just curious how the hell my service medical records were destroyed in a fire in St. Louis in 1978-79?? I just let everyone know the VA still hasn’t fix that records irregularity. Had to build a ramp for my dad after he had a stroke. 2 friends showed up with all the lumber and we had it done before he got home from the hospital. You could damn near drive a truck up it too.

That happened to me at a Georgia VA a couple of months ago! Two different guys on the phone and then went down there and happened again with my doctor who refused to refill my antidepressants! I am no longer on any meds after they found out they put me on meds for 2 years on diabetes meds with NO way to check my levels! I fear my VA more than anyone right now!
They literally wanted me to prefill pull the plug paperwork. And one of the reasons given is if I never would never walk again. Me: I'm only 38 and isn't that the next of kin responsibility? BTW aside from some elevated blood pressure, I'm perfectly healthy.

I got walked out of a (USA)VA mental health appointment, I’m talking straight from the room, because my so-called psychologist freaked out when I started talking about things I did during my service. I was not threatening nor was I agitated. I’ve dealt with this PTSD long enough that I can work with it. I got walked out by the VA police. Yes, the VA police walked me from a mental health appointment to the front door. They then asked to see my license, said I need to leave because I had a un- arrestable warrant out of the state of Colorado. I hired a lawyer in Colorado and they found no warrants. Long story short, this ex federal agent did some investigating and found out that it’s common place for VA police to gaslight a veteran just to get them off the property. You can respond to this comment if this has happened to you.

Probably my fault because back in 88' after trying to get my claim sorted, which was all documented before I got out, medical with severance pay... ...I stood on someone's desk and yell/barked at them about my dissatisfaction with the lack of service I was getting fucked with. Anyway, it was another four years before I learned I needed an advocate in order to get things worked out. CVSO got me hooked up with what I needed. Yes, there was also the suggestion that suicide would probably be my best alternative, by a neurosurgeon that was supposedly treating me. If I had been able to think instead of being stunned by what she said, I'd have probably killed her (at that time in my life). I do hope you're getting what you need now. I'm in a lot better place now, thanks to time, some hard work I did for myself and to a lesser part support from the VA. It is much better now than it once was but, it's still a governmental operation.

"Get a copy of and save everything with your name, info and signature on it." One of the first things I remember my grand parents teaching me. My Opa was a Vietnam vet, he eventually died to lung complications from a mix of good old fashioned cancer and agent orange exposure. Had they not kept impeccable records my Oma would have most likely received nothing from the VA to help with funeral/living expenses, a possibility my Opa prepared for while alive. I pass on this little bit of wisdom whenever I can because if insurance (in any form) can wriggle out of paying the people it's supposed to cover it will. Im an American vet, please keep covering this. Canadians might not be ALLOWED to protest this. This is sick and disturbing and i think the VAC needs to be reamed a new one for this until the wheelchair ramps are being built and MAID is considered to be against the medical oath of “do no harm.”

What I find telling is that they won't execute murderers in Canada but by God if you're a vet in need you're offered assistance in alleviating the VAC by receiving equipment to unalive yourself.
The "look at me" folder should be part of basic training and made mandatory at the first duty station. My first 7 or 8 years basically didn't happen because all of us who were in from the 90s till now went from paperwork to digital paperwork.
I got an award when I was an E2 but because my YN at the time didn’t enter the info in, it never made it on my record. Technically I’m not allowed to wear that award because of it. I still do. People told me I should have been a better advocate for myself. As a 19 year old E2. Okay.

The best arguments I keep hearing from leafs is that "Oh well it's only one person who is responsible for breaking these rules." To which I don't believe for a fraction of a second.
On top of that, the biggest problem is that no one is doing anything about it either. All the politicians are pretending to not know what is going on and pretending that nothing had been said to them.
The person is breaking the rules because they know they are not being enforced. The reason those rules aren't being enforced (or only selectively enforced) is because they want those rules to be broken.
The fact that its possible for one single person, unassisted and without collusion can do this at all, proves that the system as a whole is screwed up and needs to be rebuilt to have checks and balances of power everywhere.

my dad needed a knee surgery several years ago but the canadian heathcare system said it wasn't bad enough, now years later, the cartilage in his knee is non existent and because he's been having to walk on a bad knee for years, it's worn his hips down to nothing, he's had one hip surgery, now he needs another and STILL hasn't had the knee done!!! I'm proud of canadian veterans and what we've accomplished in war time, but our government fucking sucks BALLS! we have honestly considered moving to the states many times, and if it was just me and him we would have.
Since the first days of Basic Training 15 years ago, I have kept a copy of all my Military Documents: Course Reports, Leave Passes and Evaluations. Came in handy when I had to file a grievance and my Chief Clerk "lost" an important document from my Personnel File.
Im baffled by a ramp taking 5 years to be installed. It took me and 3 other people only 2 days to build and install a full ramp and stair system for someone.
Here in WA my councilor (for diagnosed PTSD and issues living with my Autism.) Recommended me, 20 at the time 22 now, suicide. It's not just Canada. I assume It's everywhere where people are coocoo. Our church built a 30 foot ramp for our older goers in one 103°F day. Gosh I'm tired of the world

And those saying VAC doesn’t offer MAID, it’s double speak. I read stuff like this as well and called BS. Yes they don’t provide MAID. VAC outsources everything. Need a medical review for a VAC claim, they have an approved doctor for that who sees you and then bills VAC. No one sitting in a VAC office with a needle of death in their hands. But when a vet is at a low point and you start asking them to consider MAID and offering to pay for it when they are seeking help to live and live better,… well then you are just scum. Scuttle butt on the vets’ rumour net is that it’s a lot more than 5 cases. Veterans’ advocate groups are saying they know of 8, and suspect more. FYI only; a ‘certified letter’ in Canada is a ‘registered letter’. And when we talk about Veterans Affairs Canada the colloquial phrase is VAC like the first syllable of vacuum. It’s an inside joke about them sucking the life out of you. Little did we know they were quietly offering veterans the big sleep.
A friend was depressed about a recent divorce and went to the dr to ask for help with possible medication or advice, and they said "If you cant sort it out, there's medical assistance in dying" I'm starting to think they get a huge bonus for each person they provide this "assistance" to.
Forget the shitty VAC, what about her supposedly friendly neighbors ? If that was in Georgia or Tennessee her neighbors would have probably stepped up and built her one within a week.

The Minister of Veterans Affairs has recently confirmed that the official number of offered MAID cases is "zero", despite testimony at committee disputes that.

I have zero links to the military but I can confirm that when you're dealing with any organisation especially a government run one this is something people do fucking constantly and part of the problem is they do no record keeping themselves of conversations with each other unless they're told to. This is very good legal practice especially if they do something unusual to 'help' you which might throw off another employee because they're not following whatever internal procedure they've got. If you were extra paranoid depending on who you're dealing with you could record the phone call itself and then there would be no way possible for them to deny what happened and try to fuck you over. In fact, forget being polite about this, there's no such thing as being too paranoid when it comes to these faceless corporate and government bureaucrat. Many of these employees will hardly be in top shape themselves mentally and they're probably one crisis in their life from a breakdown so even if you come at things with the best of intentions they could just decide to fuck you over because of their mood on that particular day. Being polite of course helps because I try not to cause unnecessary bullshit for them if they're genuine, but don't show any mercy if they decide to fuck you around.

"that can't happen because the rules say so" is the most Canadian thing ever and it's horrible. It's why a lot of things up here are run poorly. Canadians love love love rulebooks and paperwork. The more papers the more official it must be. It's so ridiculous
With a son who is aiming to soon serve in the Canadian Armed Forces, my feelings are torn. While being proud of his decision to serve our country, I pray he doesn’t require the government’s assistance afterwards. This government has a long record of turning it’s back on veterans through incompetence and unnecessary red tape when attempting to provide benefits and various forms of treatment. It truly is sad how vets are treated here.
If the United States VA system could offer MAID, they absolutely would. I've had the VA tell me I was exaggerating my pain and also deny me physical therapy, "Because I'm never going to get better."
I really want to give this more than one like, well done. The people in charge up here in the great white north are uncaring for the most part, its sad really.
This fills me with righteous indignation. There is nothing that bothers me more than people thinking that just because your life is hard that it isn't worth living. I was paralyzed at 18, in my prime. No more walking or running, a life full of obstacles headed my way. Guess what? It has been 15 years since my accident and I can't tell you how fulfilling my life is! I am married to the most wonderful husband, I gave birth to three beautiful daughters who are happy, healthy and loved so much. I have worked and am now a stay at home mom homeschooling my kids, taking care of my home and doing all the things a mom and wife needs to do. Do I understand why hardship came my way? No, but I will leave that in the hands of my savior Jesus Christ and be thankful for all he has given me good and bad. One thing I have noticed is that I encourage others. I can't tell you how many times people have come up to me while grocery shopping with my kids. They were having a bad day or feeling sorry for themselves, then they see me and my family and it shows them that nothing is impossible. That they have so much to live for and if a girl in a wheelchair can still live life and be happy so can they. Suicide is never the answer and for any government or person to say otherwise is demonic. Your life matters and don't ever give up just because things are hard. Merry Christmas!

The crazy thing is, the only people really “fighting” for this service is people who don’t even want to use it. The whole thing really makes me want to go up there and save as many REAL Canadians as I can. Not the brainwashed CBC propagandists. Im afraid they are long gone

Sir thank you for helping bring this to light. This happened to me I moved to the U.K. I am a double amputee I don’t see this as a life ender. I could go deeper but you know eyes and suiciders are everywhere.
As a Canadian, this hurts me on a new level. I believe the government is trying to normalize it. This should be only offered at one very specific point and should be left up to a primary care doctor to decide, it doesn't feel good to hear the stories of people being offered or being given this for the wrong reasons, I don't believe this is the way real Canadians care for each other. We are strong and free and generous and humble, We don't kill our own people.

They will try to make euthanasia state mandated as a cost savings measure at some point. Their currency is losing it's value, debt has reached saturation levels and they are going to be unable to inflate their way out of the deflationary spiral that is coming in the next few years, this is most likely a panic move by the beauracrats in the CAVA.
