Learn the basic steps for a safe wheelchair transfer.
Moving in and out of a wheelchair takes both strength and coordination. While some people who use wheelchairs are able to manage this daily task on their own, others require assistance. Assisting them effectively requires knowing how to properly prepare the person being transferred, as well as properly positioning yourself.
Anyone can learn these techniques. Just watch this video for basic information and pro tips on how to safely transfer someone to and from a wheelchair.

I've been caring for my father who uses a wheelchair. I would agree with everything except having them use the arm rests to lift up. When dad uses the armrest to lift up, he refuses to let go. I've had situations where I'm trying to get him to take a few steps forward once standing up out of his chair, and he's dragging the wheelchair behind him, maintaining a death grip on the rests. It doesn't matter how many times I tell him to let go. I have to peel his fingers off. Instead, I wear a harness with handles and try to get him to hold onto those as I am moving him around. I can then transfer his hands to something else (the door, the seat, etc) to hold onto once I have him in proper position.

Thank you for the information , but I need how to put a patient my mom which she is diagnose with Alzheimer’s for 12 years and she doesn’t cooperate so I have to do all the work . I am looking for a better system. Thanks

Very informative, thanks. I'm a caregiver and I have my first wheelchair bound client, that likes to go out alot, whilst he can stand on his own, I will have to help him into and out of seats.

only works if person in wheelchair is skinny like this. try moving an obese person.

gait belts do not guarantee they won't fall. If they have end-stage Alzheimer's they go into a "fall mode" -- their legs go limp--and will not help and they can go down..on the concrete. The fall belt may help break the fall, but it still will happen. For some people it is not safe to put them in a car. However, if you have the money, you can spend thousands of dollars on assist devices such as lifts
