If finding original equipment (OE) replacement tires is fairly straightforward, the introduction of wheels into the equation can make things quite a bit more complicated. Just about any vehicle can accommodate a larger or smaller wheel size than stock, and depending on your vehicle and purposes, the ideal wheel size and specification can vary significantly.
While this is not "everything you need to know about wheels", it should be sufficient to get you briefed on the basics and headed in the right direction, so let’s start with some commonly asked questions about wheel sizes and aftermarket wheels. Rims vs. Wheels: What's the Difference?
The wheel is the entire metal section that holds the tire. The rim is the outer edge & sits around the hub (disc) and holds the tire.
How do I know what rims to use or to buy or if it will fit?
The two easiest ways are to check the sticker plate in your car, it should be located inside the driver side door, or look online for the vehicle specifications for your exact make and model. That should tell you the standard or OEM recommended rim size.
What is width & diameter?
Width is measured in inches, and typically in ½" increments. Diameter is in 1" increment i.e. 116, 17, 18. How wide or narrow will depend on clearance & purpose.
What is Wheel Centerbore?
The center bore of a wheel is the machined opening in the center of the wheel that centers the wheel properly on a vehicle.
What is PCD?
The Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) is the diameter of the circle which passes through the centre of all the wheel bolts or wheel rim holes. One example is 5x100; this means there are 5 bolts evenly spaced about a 100mm bolt circle.
What is Wheel Offset & backspacing?
The distance between its centerline and the mounting surface and how much space you have on either side of the wheel. It's the ideal position, so that it can freely rotate without rubbing against the fender or the brakes. Offset can be positive, zero, or negative. Backspacing measures from the rear of the mounting face to the back (inside edge) of the wheel lip.
