This is so fantastic, I love it! You never really know what will happen when 17 things line up. Its a great number to use because its not divisible by any other. Its whole structure and how it acts on its self with the different lengths of the bars and the various bends that connect to the cylindrical holes shows that things can be different and still be equal at some point in time. The spiral gear is perfect as it unbinding and almost sexual in nature. Very nice piece.
That's so awesome! I'm so happy to find your video. I'm working on class on the mecanisms of automatas and your kinetic sculpture is really helpfull to understand all that. Thank you.
John, I also build knetic sculptures- I did, many years ago, in brass wire and sold them to make a living between jobs. I only had the kitchen table and a soldering iron. But, people could not wait for the next one to come out. I don't know why I quit doing it- The one here you have made is absolutely beautiful. You truly are a skilled artist.
I believe that I have what it takes to be a crank turner. Where should my resume go and to who's attention? Thanking you in advance, prospective employee of crank turning position with full benefits, etc. etc.
I think they might be light polarizers (potentially linear) which, when aligned in a certain configuration, would prevent light from passing through (resulting in the lack of visibility when the 17 "things" align).
Aplinewalker, Thank you for your kind words. PLease don't worry too much over the harsh words of others, all artists must learn to take criticism and the unexpected popularity of this video has proven to be a great classroom for that exercise. I was surprised however to learn the hard part is learning to take compliments and you have provided space to learn that art as well. Thank you.
I have had similar criticism for my creations and it confuses me to think that the very people who criticize works of art like this are the same people who will come home, flop on the couch and watch 4 to 5 hours of mindless crap on the poo box....but tell you that you are wasting your time!?!?!? unreal. Great work you are a true artist and metal worker/machinist. This world would be a better place if it had more people like you.
Nice Work. Almost organic in design. I think this would be a good way to get kids interested in metal work, where they can play with it, to see how it works.
г-н зонт I do, very well actually. This however is not mechanically driven by a force of energy created by heat or electrical current. This is just a toy, with a ring and worm type gear.
I've been searching for 18 things that line up for a while now. While its great to find 17 things lining up I would still love to see 18 things lining up. Please let me know if there is a video of that, it would be highly appreciated. Thank you.
Those that know nothing of art can make fun of it . But this guy is smart enough to realize that for all his time and effort, one day he will receive a large paycheck from a rich eccentric art collector. One that has a passion for one of a kinds.
Loved it, I'm also a sculptor who are starting to do things in motion, nothing against it be we already had too much static paintings and sculptures done.
This would be mind-blowing to watch if you connected an electric motor and ran the whole thing at 2 or 3 times the speed you're cranking it. In any case great work!
Don't listen to the bad comments. Most people don't understand an artist's passion for mechanical articulation and creating. Smaller things like these can inspire larger accomplishments. I bet a lot of the people commenting can't come up with anything cool on their own anyways. Easier to criticize others, anyways.
Put a light source (probably an LED) on the end of each of those arms, and crank it in the dark. It would look like a line turning into a rotating circle, back into a line.
this is actually pretty cool my only grip is add a cog and make it turn way faster per rotation then u dont have to move ur hand so fast to get the effect
you could tie sausages to strings and string them through the holes and drape the sausages on somthing, spin the wheel and the sausages will move up and down.
so many negative comments holy shit. I appreciate it as art. Anyone that doesn't like it should go make a better one how you want it. Endlessly complaining about what isn't perfect won't change anything
The planets are not orbiting around the sun. The solar system is a device, hybridising the 'Pianola' and the 'Mincer. An exceptional contribution and hours of endless amusement for your other hand.
Surprised by how many stupid people can't see the ingenious precision, effort, and skill that went into making this machine. Looks simple and random but is very intricate
Thanks for posting this! Dont pay attention to the douchbags posting negative comments. Most likely non-creative folks who could barely comprehend using basic hand tools.
i kept expecting a marble to be pushed through the center of the loops at the top. but nope…just a thing, but in theory could be used to pull 17 different things into alignment before going out again. industrial purposes? but i doubt they don't have this already if they needed it
As a piece of visual art it's quite neat. Art doesn't need a function, other than to intrigue or entertain. At that it passes full marks. As a serious piece of engineering it's ,,,,,,,,,well.
it's a neat crank system XD i keep going "the heck" until they line up and then i go "OH" and then it's back to "the heck" etc etc lol nice workmanship on the build
A lot of people are being pretty judgmental towards this guy but I think he did a really good job. It is both well designed, well constructed and creative. I also checked out the profiles of some of the haters in here. glass houses my friends, glass houses.
