Keith Jarrett has been asked many times about his grunting, and he has always said that he finds it necessary to his creative process. Many jazz pianists involuntarily vocalize to get closer to horn phrasing. If they grunt along with their lines, then when they run out of breath, then their line will be done too. Glenn Gould did this as well. Mike Oldfield does grunting in Tubular Bells as well.

If you ever get a chance to get him talking about the Guitar Player strip he used to have. Didn’t come across as your dad, more like your uncle…ok kid, if you wanna do this right, kinda practical approach. Like the guy that finally tells you “hey, you know buying a new strat doesn’t make you Clapton? Right?” I was just learning back then and bought the mag for his monthly strip, because I couldn’t play anything in it. 😂

Loving the book, but it is kind of all over the place. One chapter he is in 1981 and the next he back in 1965 and the next in 1996 and then back to 1972. Makes for a difficult read thought he stories are great.

Never had interest in Triumph's music.....but Rik, as I found out here, is incredible storyteller. And maybe, after this, listen to some of it, to get things into context.
