When a car part won’t come off: A seized wiper arm removed the home mechanic way

I was trying to replace the rear wiper motor on a 2000 Dodge Minivan and ran into immediate trouble when the wiper arm proved to be seized to the motor shaft. This an all too common situation when removing car parts…but a wiper arm? Watch the frustrating, original and sometimes comic process of a stubborn home mechanic finding a way to get it done.

Nicely done David. You taught us an important set of DIY lessons: Reuse, Repurpose, Adapt, Modify, Create, Invent, and be persistent. Five gold stars keep up the good work.

Some might call DIY a kind of mania, but I like your description better.

I liked this video because it shows the way life often works, and many self-help videos hide something it seems, and/or try to make a task easier than it actually is. I can identify with this effort; sometimes you screw up and 'break the glass,' but the secret to success many times is persistence. (Ray Kroc-Mc Donalds)

Thanks for all the ideas. Most of the videos on this subject only deal with the type of arm that has the bolt exposed. This was an impractical design to begin with, followed by the failure of the manufacturer to use anti-seize as they should have. Oh well. I'm going to try these methods after spending an entire day failing. Thank you for your video. Sometimes a guy just needs some ideas!

great video! i was able to pull mine of a 09 prius using a big pair of channel lock pliers, putting the "top" jaw on the protruding bolt(won't work unless you have a protruding bolt) and the bottom jaw on the arm. Popped right off

I’m having this EXACT problem!!! 😡 I need that puller thing! I specifically asked Ford to replace the rear arm and they agreed , the. Their service department said they couldn’t get parts because of “ supply chain problems”. But I’m convinced they just didn’t know how to get it off either.

This video REALLY brings home how much easier life can be with a little oiling and preventive maintenance lol. Twice a year, beginning of spring and beginning of autumn clean and oil doors, wipers hinges seals etc. Takes less than 15 minutes and saves you a hell of a lot of time and money in the long run.

The next step was to attach a tow chain to the rear of an F150, and then.....

LOL I was thinking he was going to replace the gas cap next that might help! Idiot's Doing Stupid things is RU-vid"s claim to fame! DUH I Believe he simply had not released the catch . A little more heat and no need for a back wiper.

Surely if it was an F150, the tow chain would be on the front end!?

What might have worked (before doing all that) if you tried drilling a tiny hole big enough to put the small red spray applicator/hose that comes with WD40 or other penetrants (I like using Sea Foam Deep Creep) then spraying the thing well through the drilled hole with penetrating oil. The corrosion inside would have disolved and it most likely would have come loose... The anti-seize on the post was a great idea. Afterwards you could use a dab of black silicone to seal up the hole that was drilled. Thumbs up! 👍🏼

Well great job on accomplishing what you set out to do. I am still paying on my car so I hesitate when it comes to trying anything that could mess it up. So that's why I just bought a windshield wiper arm remover. It was $9.00 and got the job done without breaking anything . But thank you for the video I enjoyed it.

Thanks for watching. A wiper arm remover wouldn't help on this design, at least not until I drilled a hole in the end of the arm. Good work and thanks for the comment!

Congratulations on eventual success! Everyone who repairs cars has been there, at the moment of stuckness. The glass in this design makes me nervous. Maybe some padding with heavy baking foil on top before the propane flame gets close? That window is tempered and if a crack starts , it will run and frost the whole thing into gravel, instantly. Windshields are usually in stock, back windows less so. Nice display of creative thinking.

I used a grinder/cutter disk to cut out a 1/8 of the the wiper arm in 2 minutes total. Bought a wiper arm from a junkyard for $5... cheaper than buying a puller... installed the replacement arm after appying some anti seize paste...

I loved your video, thinking outside the box, and sticking with it until you came up with a working solution. I will next try the wood wedges and see if I can get it to work for me. Also, I saw in another video I could get the puller tool, but that is likely the only thing I will ever use the tool for, and I am getting rid of the car, so that would be a poor investment.

I went the other way when I ran into the same problem, beforehand i went to the junkyard and got a couple of wiper arms (not seized to their old cars) and then, I just used a hacksaw, and made my way around the thing until I could separte the remains with some pliers... And that was it, "new" wiper arms came after it.

suggest you use foil or aluminium screen to protect the windsheld glass. Heat will also damage the heated elements of that rear window, not too mention glass cracking under heat. I have similar problem on my ford van...have sprayed with release agent etc. Why can;t manufacturers incorporate a small plastic ring between arm and spindle? would make things much easier!
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 7 лет назад
Thanks for the helpful ideas. I was very conservative in the use of heat and prying tools around that rear glass. You're right, a little better engineering could prevent this kind of struggle. Have a good one!

It's rather a long time ago I know - but do you have any I/D dimensions for the washers in the "final solution"? I've done everything you tried - and now only have the heavy washer(s) left to try... Regards, Martin Bronsdon, Gothenburg, Sweden (1995 Chrysler Voyager)
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 6 лет назад
I saved the washer. The ID is 27mm (1 1/8"). The OD is 63mm (2 1/2") . Thickness is 3.5mm (5/16"). Good luck and thanks for watching!
@salisbury1944
@salisbury1944 6 лет назад
Thanks a million! Can I bother you for the dimensions of the smaller washer? This rear wiper mechanism has a smaller splined shaft than those on the front windscreen (one of which I sucessfully removed the other day) Regards, Martin
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 6 лет назад
Sorry, I don't have that one anymore. You'll just have to find one with an ID that matches the diameter of the motor shaft and an OD that's big enough to cover the ID of the bigger washer.
