@DrTheRich

@@wallacehenryhartley1209 I think it's lots of people in that loud group having problems with the denormalization of queerness in the other direction nowadays, rather than the thing itself. In the past you were seen as weird or bad if you came out as gay. nowadays the reaction of most people is "uhm yes and??" Because it's just normal. But then in the media there is a big effort to make gayness and queerness seem special again. Like needing a specific month in the year to celebrate it, having flags everywhere etc. They want it to stay something special and extraordinary, because there is a perverse benefit to being seen and treated as special. I call that denormalizing, and it's frustrating... If people perceive something as victim mentality, or demanding to be seen as special, it will often lead to the opposite of empathy. And I also find it frustrating if this argument is twisted into it being homophobia, that unnecessarily scares lgbt people into joining in the victimhood game. Be gay, marry who you want, be romantic, do anything hetero couples would do too, kiss or cuddle in public, get kids, do whatever. The activism should move to countries where it is actually needed, but no one dares to do it there, because those countries aren't particularly nice about it...
@garden_bear_xoxo
@garden_bear_xoxo 2 месяца назад
@@DrTheRichImo, what you call "denormalization" I would call "queer liberation". Minority groups (including the queer community) should not be assimilated into the wider culture, we should celebrate everyone's unique identity and perspective. While queer rights has made significant progress, the reality is we still live in a cis- heteronormative society where you can't assume it's safe to be queer around everyone and where people in the queer community are constantly having to fight to ensure their rights are not taken away. Additionally, the "type of queer" that is acceptable in society is oftentimes one that isn't "too out there" or "too feminine/masculine" etc. The goal of pride is not to normalize queerness, but to be visible as we are, palatable to current society or not. Trans people's (especially women) bodies and right to medical care and participate in society are under direct attack. We still have much longer to go until we can say the fight for queer rights is over.... and even then, we deserve to celebrate that.

Eric Rohmer is my favourite director. There is no doubt watching this film that it has a certain lesbian overtone, the only slight issue with your assumptions is that there has always been some writing issues with this film. Joelle Miquel (Reinette) has said that she approached Rohmer with the original story and screenplay, and Rohmer even admitted that she provided nearly all the ideas, however she has never been credited. Also all the paintings are Joelle's. I have no idea of her sexual orientation, I know she has a daughter, but I can find no evidence of a man in her life. It's not really for us to pry, but the mind does wander to ideas.
@RexSvensson

I had no idea!!! Thank you for this comment, this is so interesting!
@JohnMoseley
@JohnMoseley 2 месяца назад
That's so interesting. One could almost imagine she tricked him into making a lesbian movie, except that he displays such intelligence in his other movies. The idea that she wrote the movie seems to me backed up by the fact that the movie isn't a typical Rohmer movie where the characters spend a lot of time verbally hashing out emotional or philosophical issues. On the other hand, it feels like a Rohmer movie in its lack of concern for convention. A lot of the bad Rohmer knockoffs like Call Me By Your Name mimic the look and feel but don't have this freedom. The resolution to all this might be in understanding that Rohmer's screenwriting method always involved taking a lot from the actors. As I've seen it laid out, he tended to start with a script - often one he'd been working at on and off for years - and then, when he cast the movie, he'd interview the actors and rewrite a lot based on what they told him. I think that's why the characters often sound a bit like they're being interviewed: 'I'm the kind of person who likes...' 'I don't worry too much about...' etc. I'm not saying this doesn't mean Miquel deserves a writing credit here, just that Rohmer may have crossed a line, or that there may have been ambiguity about what was coming from who. On the whole, I'd guess that she probably does deserve a credit. From memory, I think the actors are credited with at least having helped develop the script at the start of Rohmer's earlier 'La Collectionneuse,' and that was one where Rohmer definitely had a script prior to his discussions with them.
@davekellino
@davekellino 2 месяца назад
@@JohnMoseley all the above is certainly true. It's also probably interesting to note that it is claimed that Rohmer actually stopped production of this movie on a couple of occasions because he was finding it so hard to work with Joelle. Also originally the part of Mirabelle was due to be played by Anne-Laure Meury (The Aviators Wife / My Girlfriends Boyfriend) but she quit because she could not get along with Joelle at all. These kind of dramas are not something that you would normally associate with a Rohmer production.
@JohnMoseley
@JohnMoseley 2 месяца назад

@@JohnMoseley it's almost certainly probably left alone, especially as we will only hear one side now. I believe she did try and get herself credited as recently as 2012, two years after the death of Rohmer, and failed.

As important as overt queer representation is, sometimes I like relationships that are left for the viewer to interpret. As an aromantic myself, I might enjoy viewing this as a wonderful intimate friendship (in a world where everyone seems to be obsessed with romance). But I can absolutely understand why other people would make the art their own by viewing the relationship as romantic. Both are great, and even I might switch between the two interpretations depending on my mood for the day^^

I love when lesbianism is depicted as complicated. Not a girl and a girl saying "I like you" and "Well I like you too" and they kiss and go through a romantic montage. Straight romance is not exactly like gay romance, usually, gay romance is a riddle, from the beginning to the end.
@duetforherbivores
@duetforherbivores 2 месяца назад
I suspect that this film may not be as overtly romantic because (besides the obvious heteronormativity that populated most of Rohmer's films) of the fact it's a side project made during a break in the production of The Green Ray, it's specifically structured to be sparse and quotidian with very low stakes, thus no extreme complications that are derived from romance. It's structured most similarly to The Aviator's Wife, another Rohmer film in with platonic main characters: a teenaged girl and adult man. I think it's also important to highlight Rohmer's consistent theme of irony in his approach to morality, his moral tales series are more emblematic of his affection for philosophy that dissects the nature of morality more than any political affiliation. Rohmer, despite his love of nature seems to have complex feelings about those who inhabit the countryside, he often portrays them as moralistic, naive, or anti-intellectual in spite of their tactility and charm. He expounds on this the most in his subtle takedown of provincialism in The Tree, the Mayor and the Mediatheque, which is one of Rohmer's lesser favored films likely because it's less romantic and stylish. Reinette's gaucheness and fixation on morality is central to her character, thus disagreeing with Mirabelle stealing, her refusal to discuss her dating life, and her own humorous and markedly ignorant interpretations of her own art. I think the rudeness of the city dwellers is more about accentuating the schism between her rural sensibilities in contrast with urban ones, which is a big part of her relationship with Mirabelle as well. A big theme is geographic juxtaposition and how difficult it is to maintain amicability with those from different backgrounds, their friendship is so strong, it breaks that mold that we see throughout the film in Rienette's interactions with other city dwellers.

"this guy was a clear conservative, he liked family and motality" Pretty sure a feminist director who explores mysogyny and the struggles of womanhood isn't a conservative, especially at that time. Do you consider family = homophobic?

It's so weird to see two attributes like conservative and feminist can coexist in one mind. Like you randomly dropped one of the most beautiful lesbian movie contemplating on genders norms and loves and went back living your old conservative way

Probably because Ronmer is a Roman Catholic with a aristocratic and Localist views of the right. Catholicism itself is within this strange position. Catholic Social Teaching can appear Right-wing on one side but then unmistakeably on the left in another. Distributism for example is a economic theory born out of the Catholic Church which rejects both free market Capitalism and State Socialism, A Economic theory that advocates for Cooperative, Mutual Organization and anti-trust against corporation however it is also extremely Localistic leaning more on protectionist policies which the emphasis on private property as a universal right as workers should own their land and tools with the Family being the centerpiece unit of Society.

I think this essay totally fails to grasp that Eric Rohmer was deeply fascinated about Theology. His films, especially in the later part of His career were studies regarding the dynamic between behavioral virtue and vice. How one, must overpower the other, at some point. And you see this dynamic especially in His filmography in the 80s to early 90s. It's quite sad that there's been a plethora of video essays that not only try to insist that a particular work is something than that of the intent of the people who made it. Yes, it's your opinion, but perhaps it's helpful to delve into the life and way of thinking of the person who made the work, before proposing that it means what you want it to mean, rather than the reality of it all.

Since when is morallity a christian value?
@lettuceman9439
@lettuceman9439 2 месяца назад
Our modern concept of Virtue and Vices are within the foundations built by Christianity and her Development. If for example, Someone say how about "Universal Morality", It is a trap as that very Universality is within the Christian Framework of the New Covenant and the idea of "One's Image is that of God". A Undeniable factor has to do with Western Society being a Guilt-based one, Unlike the Shame Culture of The Middle East and Asia or the fortunately extinct culture of fear inherit to Authoritarian Entity like the Aztec (or just straight up North Korea).

If you think the only thing that separates a romantic relationship to a friendship is sex, you are doing relationships wrong,
@syreetadukes4428
@syreetadukes4428 2 месяца назад
The fact they chose to be in an isolated area makes me believe they have an aro/ace relationship. All they have is each other for their company. Sure they are good friends but I think what they have is special. It's one of those feelings that is hard to describe.
