thank you for making the overwhelmingly obvious and necessary point about the current genocide in palestine. it's deeply alarming how many people will love and highly rate this movie while avoiding the immediate relevance of the film's message toward the violence of israel.
@withalittlehelpfrom3
@withalittlehelpfrom3 6 месяцев назад
Relevance that Jonathan Glazer himself pointed out tonight. I hope that connection doesn't get ignored after the Oscars

@@withalittlehelpfrom3 I know it's corny, but I literally clapped when he made that speech to the captive audience of Hollywood elite who dare not speak for the Palestinian cause for fear of being labeled an anti-semite and be ostracized from the film industry. He said what very few others in Hollywood have had the backbone to say.
@Aurongel
@Aurongel 6 месяцев назад
@@withalittlehelpfrom3 It definitely wasn't ignored, which is unfortunately both a good and bad thing. Over 450+ Hollywood elites, creatives and executives signed an open letter condemning his very restrained and empathetic speech. They inadvertently proved his point that anyone speaking out for the Palestinian people get shouted down and marginalized by those who would rather reduce a complicated situation down to a reductive "us versus them" schism.
@greenvelvet
@greenvelvet 4 месяца назад
@@Aurongel What was amazing was the response to that letter which was a counter letter of over a 450 creatives praising that speech. And praising the director

I just get sick and tired of the sanctimonious dilettantes with fifty flag icons and hashtags in their bios, who shove it down your throat everywhere and have the gall to condemn you as evil if you don’t immediately passionately agree with them. They are so arrogant and believe they know everything about the conflict despite only learning about it since it became the latest trend, and this is a multifaceted and morally grey issue that has been going on for many decades. People are called ‘enablers’ or ‘cowards’ for simply stating they wish for the killings to stop on both sides, which is absolute insanity. It doesn’t help anyone in Palestine or Israel, and only causes more division and extremism.

its not that surprising if you've seen Good (2008) and Conspiracy (2001). and The Reader (2008). the worst bits for me were the fur coat and the teeth, as i had to imagine what happened to the owners. hearing shooting isnt as bad seeing the shooting in Schindler's List, for me.

Wonderful presentation. 🙏 I have been describing this movie just like this to everyone I know and begging them to watch because although it shows a dark moment in history it also speaks right to today. As of yet no one I’ve asked to watch it has done so……. What does that tell you? I’m a 3rd generation holocaust survivor I’m begging for everyone to watch this movie now.

@robtothejuice

I believe that was fully his intent as a side bar to the main one. It’s obvious in hindsight it was on his mind after the Oscars speech. Just because the film took place during the holocaust, doesn’t mean it can’t reflect a modern issue as well simultaneously imo. Just a brilliant and powerful movie.

Yes! Haunting and chilling. The ending credits glued me to my chair. The opening made me breathless. Glazer is a visionary of sound and image. Makes sense he directed some amazing music videos in his early career as a filmmaker. Especially his commercial work.

The ending showing the staff doing their work cleaning the Museum are the antithesis to the film. We were shown the banality of evil, at the end were shown the banality of GOOD, people just doing their job dilligently and quite litrally keeping the remembrance alife.

“Now watch this drive” is one of the best punctuation marks ever stated. GWBush can burn in hell forever for that singular moment. Fuck his redemption arc into mediocre painting. His work is boring, derivative, and a distraction from the atrocities he stumbled into as an inept president. His art sucks, and he is a literal war criminal.

The negative sequences in my humble opinion are shot this way to underline the stark contrast to the egocentric logic that is so dominant in this world: to be generous is to be the opposite of the natural world.

Exactly. In addition, the true horror that went on was portrayed in vivid colours, the contrast with the infrared vision during moments of compassion.

Was the night vision all dream sequences?
@elsewhere_ash
@elsewhere_ash 5 месяцев назад
I don't personally think so; although, I love that idea. It could make a compelling argument (thesis statement). Although, the girl is connected to the main story (if memory serves me right). Hope and kindness must have been something to dream for in a time like that. Glazer has illuminated empathy for sure.
@kpsks-w1w
@kpsks-w1w 3 месяца назад
No. The night vision scenes were the only scenes with a good person doing good and nice things. It shows that even in the middle of the horror there is still goodness but goodness seems like a dream and a fairytale in a time and place like that. Thats why with the night vision the director tries to make it look like that. (Just a theory)

not sure why they switched to present day Auschwitz -- unless they were saying the museum is now banal.
@elsewhere_ash
@elsewhere_ash 7 месяцев назад
Good question and possible thought from Glazer. Found it compelling that Glazer chose to focus on the cleaning of the museum as opposed to the museum in motion with people looking with reverence. Nonchalance echoes from the scene, juxtaposed with relics of the most intense period in human history. Maybe a statement on our current urgency with the evils present today.
@F_Bardamu
@F_Bardamu 7 месяцев назад
My interpretation: people cleaning the premises today are as oblivious to what happened there as the Hoess family was to the crimes being committed litteraly next door. Meaning, the banality of evil is not a thing of the past, it's always in us. Edit: of course, I'm not saying the cleaning ladies are guilty of any crimes, contrary to Hoess.
@Wladislav

I'm more interested in that they went back to Höss after that, and watching him descend into darkness, perhaps? Apparently that wasn't in the original screenplay. Not entirely sure why they had him retch either, perhaps a surprising attempt at having him grasping the enormity of the atrocities he is committing?
@BullyMaguire4ever
@BullyMaguire4ever 6 месяцев назад
@@WladislavI got the impression that he did feel disgusted at what he was doing, but was trying to do what he thought he must to provide for his family and he tried to get out of it by getting transferred and when he wife insisted on staying, he felt forced to go back to running Auschwitz and it made him sick. I felt he had some humanity while his wife had none. She was proud to be “queen of Auschwitz.”
@Wladislav
@Wladislav 6 месяцев назад
@@BullyMaguire4ever Oh, quite the opposite. He didn't want to be transferred at all, which is also why he got his friends in high places such as Bormann trying to prevent the transfer, and why he was so happy to be able to go back. Höss was an ardent Nazi and showed basically no regret for his role in the extermination of his victims until just before his execution.

I think it was also a practical decision, i havent seen all interviews but the cinematography seems to use natural lightning to natural to as close as possible. Filming pitch black night scenes would require significant 'studio' lightning taking you out of the documentary approach the movie is going for. Thats why it reverted to non IR when she entered the house, as they HAD light inside the house in real life.
