When a King Tiger Was Rammed by a Sherman

When Lieutenant John Gorman of the 5th Guards Armoured Brigade was riding on board the Ballyragget, near the village of Cagny in Northern France, he was confronted by a group of German tanks including the feared Tiger 1 and the King Tiger. He would later write in his book about the encounter, “It was horror personified.”
Determined to take down the King Tiger but knowing that the gun of his Sherman is near useless against it, Gorman turned to his driver and ordered “Ram it!”

There is one small detail missing from this: During the initial flight from the Sherman's wreckage, Gorman's assistant driver, one James Baron, jumped into a trench, thinking his crew was there. Instead, it was actually the Tiger's crew, who glared at him, so James saluted them and ran off to join his own crew. Edit: I've been informed that it was not Gorman who did this cheeky feat, but his assistant driver, James Baron, God rest his soul.

If your wondering why the tiger crew retreated their turret was probably locked in place by the impact, and its sprocket may have been damaged so the tiger was practically useless. Plus it's armor may have been dislodged making it easier for a tank like the firefly to penetrate the new weak points

You'd also need to consider the sound reverberating throughout the hull. Tankers can go deaf from the sound of a direct impact on the hull, if not then they be heavily disoriented. The disorientation could also probably be why they didn't kill that one Sherman tanker that got lost.

When the Tiger I was fielded, their crews were handpicked from batches of experienced tankers. But when the Tiger II _entered chat_ they also tried to put experienced tankers... but were less easier to find, at least still alive. So young crews were indeed assigned to the latest German technology, Otto Carius lost a Jagdtiger in his platoon to an extremely inexperienced commander, for example. Thus, if many times the simple ricochets were beyond the nervewracking treshold of the crew, imagine a relatively inexperienced group of young men hit by a 30+ ton "round" 😂

It is true that tigers had a lot of mechanical problems and were often abandoned or easily destroyed because they broke down. But in battle these problems didn't make a difference for the allies, both tigers were a nightmare even if you were in a tank that could out maneuver it. Now imagine seeing a tiger II and a Tiger I at the same spot, it's something you'd only hope to see in a dream.

Military History Visualised does a good touch on this topic as well I'd say. Ther German tanks were effective when handled with care. It was just that the effectiveness was too good such that the enemy never bothered for a fair fight. Hence, why these heavy tanks often broke down before they ever saw combat. Simply put, they were forced to pursue the enemy when they were clearly designed for head-on engagements. It sounds the same when from a practical standpoint its far too different.

Genuine question, with the firefly, why would he shoot the damaged tanks first and not the still functionally tanks that were less armored than the king tiger and could return fire? When given the choice to finish a incapacitated enemy or take out a distracted target, taking out the distracted is usually the better plan as the disabled can be finished after dealing with the dangerous enemy.

@@Reza-sl4jm The sherman firefly had a bigger cannon than the other sherman variants, surely if he figured he could destroy the king tiger he could destroy one of the 2 heavier tanks still working, there was still a tiger1 and a panther down there, the other remaining shermans should be able to take the panzer 4 and he should have targeted the tiger1 as it was the most powerful of the 3 vehicle types that were operational on the field, having the biggest cannon and thickest armor of the 3.

@stevencolor3389
@stevencolor3389 2 года назад
@@Reza-sl4jm True he did hit the tiger but 3 problems occur: 1st off, the firefly fires 3 shots to take out the already broken tanks, 1 miss at the King Tiger, 1 hitting "the flank" igniting it and one into the Sherman hitting the ammo, this removes the element of surprise and gives the still alive German tanks time to adjust both their turrets and the their hulls position and rotation 2: The tiger 2 has thicker armor than the tiger 1 so if he pens and ignites the tiger 2 he would have been able to do the same if he gets the correct conditions on the tiger 1 (same angles, distance,etc) 3: If the animation is accurate, it hits the top of the turret at a horrendous angle, at that angle the effective armor would see a huge jump, using warthunders data, it goes from the 26mm thickness of the actual metal to the equivalent of over 130mm with that poor of an angle, we also don't see an animation for the 2nd hit but it could have been a repeat of the first hit. by contrast if he shot at it first before killing the broken tanks he had their side view as he was flanking them and easily could have hit the side armor where as far as I can tell he could have penetrated the armor
