When a Volcano Erupts Under Your Neighbor's House: Visiting the site of Hawaii's 2018 Eruption.

In 2018 I visited Hawaii's Big Island and saw a huge lava lake on the summit of Kilauea, days after I left the activity got so intense the park was closed. There were earthquakes and then a new set of volcanic fissures opened up under the neighborhood of Leilani Estates. Ultimately Fissure 8 would effuse record amounts of lava in a very short time, creating rivers of lava that reached the sea, covering many homes and also creating new land before the eruption ceased.
So when I went back to Hawaii this year I really wanted to get as close as possible to the site of this event. As it turns out, there are tours that take you onto the devastation zone, some are pricey professional operations, others are locals who add their own experiences and you can literally rent a vacation home that's right next to the cooling lava flows.
Thanks to Melissa at Fissure 8 tours for giving the neighborhood level view of this.

Lots of the imagery here was created by the USGS and you can track the latest views of Kilauea from their site:

I was working cruise ships at the time this occurred, and happened to be on the one that goes around the Hawaiian islands. Our cruise schedule was upended for quite some time due to the hazards. There were nights when we did a sail-past of the impacted area while the eruption was at its height; it's at once terrifying, awe-inspiring, and impressive to see the earth "bleeding fire" as the lava flows. It is no surprise that Hawaiians hold Madame Pelé in such high regard. At the same time, our ship, crew and even passengers did their utmost to support the relief effort for those impacted by the 2018 eruption.

It´s also a reminder on how bad planets actually are for living on them, not just that they can be very dangerous to the life on them, but they are also the worst waste of all those minerals, at some point we will all live in space habs like the O´Neil Cylinders and keep the entire earth as a protected nature reserve that people only visit as tourists or scientists.
@Dragrath1
@Dragrath1 2 года назад
If your on continents there is a bit more safety away from the edges since you have the comfort of a density stratified silicate "glacier" elevated above the surrounding thin shell by buoyancy. Now for hot spots like Hawaii or Iceland yeah you are on a bit of that "eggshell thin" layer pushed above the underlying surface. I believe upper underlying continental portion of the mantle is distinct enough from the surrounding upper oceanic mantle and deeper lower mantle that they can be considered part of the same floating silicate glaciers/iceberg structures we call continents and thus not "eggshell thin". Additionally research indicates that most of the material in the earth is a crystalline solid on human timescales (rock does flow on geologic timescales in relation to temperature and pressures). The liquification of material tends to be much closer to the surface often driven by adiabatic decompression as material nears the surface. This isn't true of all volcanos but it seems to typically be the way most volcanoes operate based on seismic wave analysis and the study of crystal types and ages from past volcanic eruptions. In other words the rock is mostly solid and or crystal mush/rock slush when you do get molten liquid flowing within the crust that is a warning that an eruption is likely eminent "soon"(geologically speaking)

This is such a cool opportunity to be able to go explore the actual core spot where the lava came out of the earth. The Volcano that is erupting in Iceland right now for the past 4 months has been an incredible event to witness. People have been able to get sooooo close to it when it initially erupted and it's been documented by hundreds of people filming and flying drones every single day. It's just incredible watching it grow and change each day. And it just looks like such an amazing field of lava now full of interesting tunnels, holes, textures and colors. I don't know when it will be done erupting but the urge to go explore it is hard to fight off.

Two bits you might find interesting, if you didn't already know them: Tephra is any fragmental material produced by a volcanic eruption, including ash and volcanic bombs/blocks. The gravel-sized (2-64 mm diameter) tephra is called lapilli, or volcanic cinders. The "foamy" (highly vesicular) glass that the cinders are composed of is scoria - essentially the mafic (iron-rich) equivalent of pumice.

My two favorite islands in the world are Moorea and the Big Island. The Big Island is such an amazing island because it is so diverse…jungles to deserts to snowy mountains to sandy beaches to the most active volcano on Earth. One of the greatest moments of my life was experiencing “reverse vertigo” late at night on the Big Island as I laid on the grass and stared into the universe…the Milky Way and the stars are so crystal clear with little light pollution that I felt like I was “falling” into the universe.

I was watching that flow for its whole life. Very interesting. Glad to had been alive to see it. Watch the Iceland eruption just this past couple of months also. Can't wait for the next one. Just like when we get to watch Star ship do its thing, very exciting, plus very proud.

In some way it reminds me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail when I see the land owners there: "One day, lad, all this will be yours! I built this property up from nothing. When I started here, all there was was lava. Other folks said I was daft to build a house on lava, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em. It sank into the lava. So, I built a second house. That house sank into the lava. So, I built a third house. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the lava, but the fourth one... stayed up! And that's what you're gonna get, lad: the newest house in these islands... for now."

I'm moving back to the Big Island next month after four years away (so I missed this happening in person), and that'll be on my list of things to see to check out how they've changed in my absence! :D

I love the sight of life already reclaiming this area. Over time layer of soil will form, roots and microorganisms will erode the fragile rocks. Thanks to huge amounts of nutrients inside the magma, this area will be very fertile. Until the next eruption hits 😉

Lucky you! I followed all that drama on line, hard to get an idea of the scale of that vent until y'all graced it with your presence. Although that current one in Iceland seems to be in another league. Thinner lava, more water apparently.

How can we love magma, lava and vulcanos being them so damn destructive and deadly. Amazing video

It's a reminder of the "living" Earth. Our planet is still quite active, but the scale of that action is mostly beyond our perception. A volcanic event lets us see geology as it happens. Also, (Beavis voice): Fire! Fire! Fire! Hehehe. Fire is cool. (/Beavis voice)
