On the southeast coast of the big island of Hawaii, lava flowing from the Kilauea crater collides with the Pacific Ocean. As new lava emerges, it quickly cools, forming billowy, round shapes called pillow lava. The constant accumulation of new rock results in frequent collapse and avalanche on the reef slope -- an accelerated cycle of creation and destruction that makes for a very unstable environment.
The steam, heat, fire and chaos that make up this underwater inferno are the backdrop for Episode 1 of our new series UnderH2O. In the series, our team of cameramen will give a behind-the-scenes look at underwater filmmaking and show how we go about capturing images of some nature's most exciting underwater events, creatures, and locations.
Please subscribe to our channel for new episodes every other Monday. Coming up, we'll feature a night dive with manta rays and go 100 feet deep to explore the marine life that has taken root around an airplane wreck.
And we'll do our best to answer any questions you might have in the comments, so please ask away!

Hey Craig! Just showed this to my 7th grade science class. During our lesson on plate tectonics. When the conversation turned to hot plates and the newly forming Lo'ihi, one student asked, "what does it look like when volcanoes erupt underwater?" To which I replied, "Let me show you!" They loved it! Thanks for giving me the opportunity!

Since you are a teacher of our next generation, I hope you told them the difference between an underwater eruption vs. a lava flow from a land mass that then drains into the water. Because that is what this is. It's a good simulation of what it may look like, but please don't combine the two and call it an underwater volcano Thanks. ;)

Hi 6th graders! Thanks for watching. The water is very very hot, but the hot parts were in patches. We could actually see the different temperature patches, because when hot and super hot water are next to each other, they shimmer as they mix. Watching for these areas carefully, we were able to stay out of the super hot water which heats up to over 150 degrees. We didn't use more protective gear than normal because it was more important for us to be able to swim away fast if things went wrong.

A submarine volcano is still better than terrestrial volcanoes. Terrestrial volcanoes sometimes creates a lot of air pollution, heat the surrounding air, emits lava to destroy surrounding stuffs and takes a longer time to cool down. Submarine volcanoes still creates some air pollution, but it doesn't directly flow through the air, it rarely heats the surrounding air, the lava doesn't destroy many stuffs and it takes a shorter time to cool down. During a submarine volcano, the seawater usually weakens the lava effect, which the lava becomes ineffective to pollute or heat the surrounding air or cause great damage, and they cool down pretty quickly. A submarine volcano usually can't cause great damage unlike the terrestrial volcano because the water usually weakens the lava effect, which eliminates some of their burning potentials.

Robert, we are professional divers and do not suggest anyone dive like this. However, for us, it was very important to have our gear as minimal as possible so we were agile and light underwater. The biggest danger was not being able to move quickly enough to avoid catastrophe. The harness systems and stripped down regulators we used were perfect for this situation. Thanks to Innovative Scuba Concepts and Scubapro for supplying them to us! And fyi, we do have SPG - wireless transmitter.

Unless under pressure, Water will never, ever reach 150 C, above 100 C it will boil and evaporate immediately. Water can only reach 150 C at approx 0.47 MPa, equivalent with a depth of 35m. So the only situation, where water can reach 150 C is when lava erupts at that depth . . .

This is not pure water. Its sea water. So it contains Caustic. Boiling point will be elevated as the concentration of impurity is increased in pure water. So, there is a possibility of 150C boiling point provided the concentration of salt in water and BEP curve matches.

Wow, the formation of new terrain that will affect life now and in the distant future. I have lived on the slope of an active volcano, been in ancient lava tubes, miles long like subway tunnels, gathered obsidian boulders from a mountain of glass and realize how dangerous, yet important volcanic activity is to life. Minerals, gases, climate change, destruction and fertile soils. The power of Mother Earth never fails to amaze me. I love the wonder and mystery of it all. I find it humbling, frightening and exciting. I doubt life would even exist without volcanos, yet they can just as easily take it away. Much respect and awe.

If the majority of volcanoes are underwater, and the fact that there has been an increase in volcanic activity world wide, wouldn't it make sense that the reasons the ice caps are melting and that the oceans are getting warmer are due to this fact?

I'm sensible. I'm buying what 99% of climate scientists are saying. I trust such an overwhelming consensus as that. Oil and gas companies spreading propaganda to increase their massive profits, despite privately knowing otherwise? Not so much. I'd tell you the same thing, mate. It's our world, we're the one's who'll deal with the consequences when shit gets hot - we already are (I live in Australia too and I'm in my 20's).
@skullsaintdead
@skullsaintdead 6 лет назад
Why does protecting the environment seem dodgy? If you love something, you want to protect it. Plus, nature will survive climate change, it's us who will struggle (severe weather, water shortages, crops dying, cities flooded..). I just hope you wouldn't prevent conservation efforts and those to mitigate climate change. I don't know how old you are, but my generation is going to be here when it gets hotter and it's unfair that those deniers who will be dead won't have to deal with the consequences. I just don't know what is to be gained by denying the truth, even if you think it's a remote possibility that we've caused climate change, the ramifications are so severe, that we need to plan for it's eventuality. I mean, are you a climate scientist? Would you believe one brain surgeon who tells you that you don't have a deadly brain tumor, or 99 doctors who tell you that you do? It's too much of a risk, mate.

Is it too much to ask for a non-music track? It is ruining the experience of the natural underwater sound. I give this video a 'thumbs down' just for the added soundtrack - next time, just leave it natural so we can get a true sense of what it sounds like underwater next to active volcanism's pops, cracks, sputtering, rumblings, etc. - your music is merely a distraction from the reality and experience.
