The more I research ADHD the more the world and my life makes sense, why do I need literally everything I own to be on display so I can clearly see it every day? Because otherwise I forget it exists and I stop using it. This was so incredibly respectful 💕

Its been 9 months since my husband passed away and I started watching your channel. I am still plugging along getting rid of stuff, thankfully we have a lot of thrift stores here and in fact one gives you points for each bag you bring in a couple weeks ago those points turned in to $7 off my purchase in their store. I used that to buy a couple t shirts to replace old ratty ones. Its hard to resist going in to the thrift stores when I donate but I have managed to resist. There are heavy duty items in my basement that belonged to husband Table Saw for one I mentioned it to my husbands boss today that I was going to hire 1 800 Junk to bring it up and get rid of it, he said "Oh No don't do that I have a guy who'll do it for free" so one more big item will soon be out of my basement. I'm 61 and not able to lift heavy items I am thankful. Decluttering is going slower than I would like but I'm getting there thanks to videos like yours that show how. Thank you. Anna In Ohio

Anna, I am proud of you. I just worked on decluttered my ADHD mom’s house and have taken a short break after being 80% through the first pass in the rooms. We filled a dumpster +30 bags of trash while cleaning out six rooms, and have two remaining rooms. Plus a 2.5 car garage that hasn’t been opened in ten years. It goes quicker when you can allow friends to help you. They see the burden you carry and feel called to help lighten the load a bit.

Your grasp of someone living with ADHD is awesome. Even though many of us have learned to compensate and manage our lives effectively , there are often some areas like this where we get overwhelmed. Non-judgemental help is a godsend! It's not that we pay no attention, it's that we pay too much attention, which often turns prioritization efforts into a shambles. Thanks for your kindness❤

I have never been a good housekeeper, and struggled for many years with my inability to keep my things in order. However, when I came out of cancer treatment two years ago my whole appartment was nearly morbidly cluttered and dirty from all those days that I had spent on the couch, feeling exhausted and tired. My sister came to the rescue and we took our time cleaning and decluttering. One room after another, we went through boxes, bags and lonely items, things that had been put away into oblivion, and even if I was often embarrassed (sp?) it was a huge relief. Since then I have been able to put to use my sister's rule of "each item into it's place and a place for every item", mostly. To keep up keeping up, I so do love watching your videos, for they are a constant funny and witty reminder that I am not a hopelessly lazy person. I have since then been able to mostly avoid buying crap and things that will just stand in the way and fill up space. In Germany, there is an expression for this, "Stehrümchen" , little things that sit on your shelves, desks and tables and simply take up space and serve no purpose whatsoever. Less clutter is a load off my shoulders... My sister has managed to be respectful and helpful at the same time, much like you and Jason are. Thank you for that.

@@debpratt52 I know how that attachment can feel. It's tough to get rid of things you relate to certain people or certain memories. My friend recommended a certain method I think Marie Kondo teaches, which is to give the items you're getting rid of a funeral. I don't have a big enough house for all of my crap (I have literally had dreams where I find out that I secretly have a huge basement). What I have done is gotten a storage space. That way things I don't need everyday can go into the storage unit (extra chairs for when I have guests, old flatscreen TVs that still work). Things I don't need all the time but just can't part with? into the storage unit. Since it is not in my house it's is one less pile I have to look at everyday but it is there if I need it. It has been so amazing and only about $70-ish a month. If you can afford it and have one that isn't super far away it is worth it. I have ADHD.

200% with not surprise cleaning. When I was about 11yrs old, I thought I would try to help my mum by doing the dishes and loading up the dishwasher. She freaked out, redid the entire thing and I got in trouble for cleaning. It was probably the 1st inkling I had that she was not sane. I’m learning so much from you about ADHD. I remember I went on a trip that kept me away from home 5 weeks. When I arrived home it was too a pristinely clean and tidied space. My mother had totally revamped my space. She did this thinking she was helping me. I was really upset for a long time, not because of her kindness but because in my mind I could no longer find things. I always feel like a failure because my environment is always a mess and no matter how much effort I put into keeping things neat and tidy I am never successful in maintaining that. I get bogged down by what I call “stuff” in my life. Jokingly, I tell people that I'm sure in a past life I had servants that dealt with everything.” The other aspect of my behaviours that I can relate to is never finishing anything. In a previous video I remember you mentioning that people with ADHD can start projects but commonly don’t finish them. If you give me a deadline on a project, I almost come to a stand still. Thankfully this does not occur when I have bills to pay. I am seeking therapy to help me with all of this. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support!

As someone with ADHD I cannot stress enough how great it is to have clear stackable containers, line of sight labels, and picture labels. (I've even made room planograms before. lol I have had that sucker taped to both sides of the garage door at one point. ) I have issues with out of sight out of mind, but I also cannot stand not having open space on the floor. This has lead me to throwing stuff in closets or boxes, telling myself that I'll get to them later, and completely forgetting the mess waiting to fall on my head when I open said closet. (I won't even get into the hell that is sorting through paperwork and mail. )

One of the best things I did with being ADHD was to set up some shelves and buy some bins all the same style and size (I opted for those black bins with yellow lids). In the garage we have them line the wall so the car can still fit (although it meant that a passenger had to get in and out before the car got in the garage). In the basement it limits how much is stored and keeps the storage to a limited area as well. That is a commitment I made to myself when I set up the system: To only store things in bins on shelves so no migrating, no expansion. I also need the bins to be moveable by myself so I had to limit the weight of them. The shelves required that heavier things go on bottom and lighter things go on top. It is a long process setting this up if you are decluttering in conjunction with setting up the organization system. Labeling and inventorying are very helpful to your future-self, too. I wish these folks had the resources to buy some uniform shelving for their garage. But that's just me and my aesthetic. Thank you to Midwest Magic for doing these jobs and giving us inspiration: It can be done!!! One additional benefit: By setting up this sort of system, you are buying time to later review the bin contents when you have less contact/more emotional distance. I recommend taking the bins outside into the sunshine so you get a really good look at their contents. It makes it easier to declutter since you are now closer to the trash can/curb and can set the items free to others who desire/need them more than you do now. The bins act like the shelf by shelf method by Dana White except you are not even looking at these things on the daily (unless you live in the basement or are frequently in your garage). Also if detailed inventorying isn't your thing, just take a photo of the contents from the top down to give you a bird's eye view of the contents and keep that photo labeled with the bin label so you can view them from your computer/phone. I recommend using shelves rather than stacking bins as it eventually impacts the structural integrity of the bin and they are likely not recyclable. Once the bin in damaged likely the contents will be too.

The kick in the tush with the “out of sight out of mind” problem is that we sit stuff down, forget where we put it, forget that we still own it and buy a replacement. So by putting all the stuff back into like minded grouping, we can see what we actually have. When my aunt passed we found 4 vacuums in her home (severe ADHD with cptsd is my theory)…I know I have an annual reminder set on my phone to go thru the house, find 100% of the cleaning supplies, combine all like bottles and put everyone back in a central location. It helps to remove windex from the mental shopping list when you know you have 2.5 full bottles in the purple tote under the sink left hand side, behind the basket of towels. 😂😂😂

So you put the rubber band in the desk, then you see a reminder for an appointment you meant to go to but missed. So you hop online to set a new appointment and then you're playing a game or have fallen down the wiki rabbit hole and the mess is still there. Don't beat yourself up if watching cleaning is easier than doing it and if you can use these videos to body double and attack the mess you want to clean.

I love Post 10. He has more respect for this planet than any other person I can think of. He found a mound of trash (old tires, a car bumper, a three-piece couch, etc.) that someone had just dumped out in the country and I think it actually caused him physical pain to see that. He moved as much as he could move by himself and got it out by the side of the road so a highway crew could pick it up and haul it away and his comment was that "Some low-class individual dumped this stuff here." Mack, I love this consolidation! ❤. It’s what I try to do about twice a year when my husband has done DIY in our house. Once he has finished, he dumps whatever tools, paint trays etc into plastic bags in our small garage “out of the way” then forgets about them. They then build up so I can’t walk through the garage, which is the only access into our back garden ( we live in a terraced house in the UK) and I’m always screaming “ I just want to be able to walk through the garage!!” Fortunately the “moose 🐁 loose about our hoose” in our country are much smaller than your USA “bigger is better” ones, so they take up less room in our garage, ( and they don’t talk!) but they do like to make nests in old shoes and last time, I found an old trainer (sneaker) filled with peanuts that a wee mouse had stolen from our bird table! We have a very good reason for completely clearing the garage soon, as the council is going to close the local dump soon, so this will be our final chance to get rid of stuff we have been holding onto for too long, “just in case”. Thanks Mack and family for all you do!! ❤

Thank you for your videos, I came for the relaxing effect of seeing someone clean, stayed for the funny comments and I ended up with discovering things about myself. I dont know if I have a type of ADHD (it's almost impossible to get diagnosed here if you're an adult) but every time you say "out of sigh out of mind" and "don't clean people places without their consent" I see myself. I had years of conflict with my mother who's a clean freak, she would come to my place when I was at work and sort, throw away and move stuff. I was getting furious. She finally understood and stopped doing it but she's still telling me all the time "you should put this here" and when I say no she goes "well, I guess I'm stupid since my ideas are rubbish to you". I wish she could understand english better and watch your videos, maybe she'll understand I'haven't been in a rebel phase against her for 30 years, it's just even if I know it comes from love, her attitude is very bad for me. I get rash everytime she visits, mind you :D Please, if you're a type of person like my mom, don't clean or comment if someone refuses your help, we're not disrespecting you, we just can't handle it.

My Mom always used to say " You know what you should do" with regards to my house ( never mind that I'm 5'8 and she was 5'4 so liked things in lower cabinets than I did). I promised myself I would do my best to never say that to my kids. I think I've only said it once, then immediately apologized. Everyone has their own things that work for them.

Sage advice. I believe any cleaning or maintenance on the home is never a waste of time or effort. One mustn't believe chores to be fruitless or an exercise in futility. A chore describes 'a turn, an occasion, a movement, the return or coming around again of a time'. They are a natural part of life. We cannot let the crippling thoughts of pessimism prevent us from having a go, or making an attempt. That straighten up, clear out 'spring clean' can work wonders for your brain and body like a breath of fresh air, better than any drug or treat. Who knows what breakthroughs might occur with an individual during those few weeks of clarity?

Since I have little money and ALOT of time, I will be spending the next several days cleaning my house, inspired by YOU!!! (and Jason) Let me begin by clarifying that my 'house' is a 30 foot RV with little to no storage so it is bursting at the seams with WAY too much stuff. I am one of those who hate to throw things away because once I do, I will need it. But I digress and those 33 gal contractor trash bags are crying to be filled. I know it will ne difficult for me, but it must be done. Thank you for all your inspiration. I look forward to having a home I can actually move around in. This is such a great piece, and so, so helpful. I know high-level hoarding has an audience, but this is more common, at least IME. All I’ve dealt with has been basically “too much stuff” and becomes overwhelming. It’s not really gross dirty, and yes the ppl really do know where things are. Mac’s description of “on top of the thing and under the block that’s next to…” is spot on. But the space no longer functions and it’s way overwhelming. Just tossing the boxes and obvious trash is huge. And dealing with broken things that were to be fixed “someday” but now rusted/unusable. And clothes/textiles that molded. Paint that solidified. Electronics outdated. But any bit of consolidation/organization helps. It may not look like much has been done, but it’s like the kid at the beach when a storm washes up thousands of starfish. He helps some back in the water, but adults tell him don’t bother, theres too many for his efforts to matter. The kids response: “well, it matters to the one I helped.” Mac and Jason did great to set these owners up for more, if/when they choose. Providing *any* organization and “breathing space” is huge. Anyone who wants to help others might also think about clear containers/bins. “Out of sight, out of mind” is a really big thing with ADHD. So are all the extra cleaning supplies. Good intentions, but follow-through is hard. Even with therapy….look! A shiny new moose! Must spin kick! But first change shoes. Oh look! Mac’s jeans! Where’s his watch? Gotta sort my jewelry. Etc.

Wow, what an incredible transformation! Mack, you and Jason did an amazing job organizing this garage in a way that is respectful of the homeowner's needs. It's so important when helping someone with ADHD to work within their organizational system rather than completely changing it. I love how you took the time to understand how the homeowner finds things and consolidated items into labeled bins while keeping things in similar locations. The before and after pictures show how much more functional the space is now while still honouring the homeowner's belongings. I can really see your patience and understanding shining through in how you handled this big cleaning project. Thanks for sharing such a great example of helping someone in a way that works for their unique needs!🌟🙏🏻

Our garage has a long way to go yet, but your videos are helping me find ways to deal with the madness while hopefully not being as intensely overwhelmed. I suspect it would add way too much time to your task, but I will say that using a label maker and printing labels for all 4 sides of my tubs with just the general idea of contents (baking supplies, party supplies, electronics, etc) has helped a lot. Even with clear tubs the “out of sight, out of mind” issue gets us some, so labels kind of keep it more “in sight”. Just an idea to add in for others with ADHD and other disorders that’s helped my household. Thanks for the cleaning tips, too, I’ve been using pretty much all of them! ❤

I always label all four sides of totes and boxes, as well as the lids/tops. Since permanently damaging my back, I have to rely on my kids to fetch and carry for me. I'm thinking of labeling the shelves, too, so that things get returned to their proper place instead of getting plunked in the middle of the floor because, "I couldn't remember where it goes." 🤦‍♀️
