I completely agree. If you’re going to get out of the truck to see what you’re doing when backing up, get completely out of the vehicle with both feet on the ground away from the moving truck. Then after you have a visual on what’s going on, jump up in the truck and continue backing appropriately.

@@johnmoor86 I definitely couldn’t do it with my truck. Allison tc10 with 2.49 rearemd. Low reverse at idle is 4mph. I got it used and I have no idea what idiot specced an Allison this way, but as soon as I get a chance I intend to redo the entire low range to something that makes more sense.

If you're unsure about ANYTHING with your trailer, stop the truck and GET OUT. Walk back and take a look. There's NEVER anything wrong with getting out and figuring out what you need to do to back that trailer up successfully.

A professional knows where his trailer is at and how far he can go. You have to be the best backer in the world to be a successful driver. Too many people think all they have to do is navigate going forward, I would argue most accidents happen while backing….

I’ve been a proud truck driver for a little over 5 years. In Staten Island, NY, I’m docked waiting to get unloaded. Across the lot from me was a young kid, probably early 20s, take his phone, turn on the FaceTime, placed it on the dock camera facing the trailer. And with another phone, he’s FaceTiming the truck as he parks. I asked him why does he do that, he says “I don’t always trust my mirrors. This tells me exactly where I gotta go.”

After running big rigs in Wyoming and Montana for a few years. I'm all for a working backup assist like they have in smaller cars. Sometimes it's a pain in the ASS backing into your loading dock, especially at night when the crew didn't turn on their flood lamps and guide lights. A working back up assist would be a god send even for life long truckers. Less bumps and trailer damage.

On the farm loading hay out of the field by hand when its just you and you goota get it done. Truck rearend in low, tranny in 1st granny and the idle screw cranked up to about 1200rpm. Line up next to the row of bails and let the truck go. Jump out and start tossing bails on the bed. Get to the end and jump back in, get all the bails stacked in clean, turn the truck around and jump out and let it drive itself again as you toss bails on again..

With a truck like that, you have to open the door that's the only way back and up and make sure you have the right angle. Professional drivers don't get into accident. They know what they're doing 110%

In my 48 years of truck driving I have always said that if you can't back with your mirrors, you should not be driving a truck. Lots of guys have their mirrors adjusted wrong. It's no wonder they do dumb stuff to back up. I have lots of videos on how to properly adjust your mirrors so this crap never happens to you. Why die?
