In 1930s and 1940s SDB was one of the most popular vocalists in undivided Bengal. At that time he was not a composer as most of his legendary hits were tuned by mostly Surasagar Himanshu Dutta. Afterwards why he moved to Bombay (presently Mumbai) from Kolkata and settled there is a different story. The musical genius in him was boundless to make him one of the greatest of composers. Music directors are occasional singers also but with one of the finest of voices the prince of Tripura almost gave up his singing in Bombay. May be his voice and articulation could not match in the lips of Hindi speaking actors. He lent his voice in a few occasions but mostly for background music and avoided any effort to justify the profound musical ability in him as a singer and viewers of Hindi films totally missed him as a vocalist. In Upkaar, the song 'Piya mayne keya kia' was based on a Bengali folk tune.
